Kevin Smith Binge...

For the last few days, I have been on a serious Kevin Smith movie binge. Even his new, more disappointing shit.

I started of with Clerks (Duh). I still laugh just as hard as I did the first time my Dad had me watch it when I was about 15. Watching it made me remember getting grounded for showing my friend in high school who's family was super Mormon. Good Times.

I actually skipped a head to Dogma next. Not sure why, maybe I just wanted to confirm my deep hatred for Ben Affleck (Im still not sure how he is more famous than Casey, who is obviously more talented). Anyways... I still love Dogma. Its on of my favorites with Jay and Silent Bob, due mostly to the facet that Jay's gayness really starts to come out which is fucking hilarious.

Then I went straight for Chasing Amy... What can I say about this? True brilliance. Probably after Clerks, this is my favorite Kevin Smith movie. Jason Lee rules so hard in this, actually, everything rules about this movie.

I had to go back to Mallrats, which has always been great, but recently I have come to respect it a lot more. Just a fun movie.

I had to go out and buy Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, which I had only seen once since the theaters. Pretty damn funny, but I can tell was starting to really lose his shit in this one. It had some great parts, but just not the same... Plus, you really feel like shit when "God" closes the book on The View-Askewniverse at the end. I felt like my teenage years would slowly drift from memory.

I rented Jersey Girl. Fuck My Life. Next Movie.

Clerks II. When I saw his interview in Clerks X where he talked about the idea of Clerks II, I both shit my pants with excitement, and wanted to beat the shit out of him in the same way I want to beat up Lucas. Sorry. Finally, it came out and I saw it opening morning. After it finished I bought two tickets for the next two showings because I could not remember laughing that hard in a long time for these reasons:
A: Randall is back, and almost as funny as he was in Clerks.
B: I fucking hate Lord of the Rings people. (All the movies are is a bunch of people walking)
C: Rosario Dawson's dance scene...
D: Jay's tribute to Silence of the Lambs
...there are so many more. I had hope for Smith, and I lost it again with Zack and Miri.

I didn't see Cop out, even though I love Tracy Morgan (Jordan... I love 30 Rock) and Bruce Willis is a god.

This is a big rant about a big man. I love Kevin Smith, but he either needs to stop making bad movies, or start writing more comics.

    Fuc'n great rant about a radical writer and some damn good movies. I just revisited Dogma a few weeks back and still love it. Maybe I need to do a Kevin Smith day on the next rainy day hideout, hmmm? But you did bring up Jason Lee which ironically a lot of people who know him as an actor don't know that he was a pro skater first and was one of the people street skating is where it is at today even newer skater don't know this. If you get a chance to see Jason Lee skate videos do so. Maybe in between watching his hollywood films on a rainy day cause they are just that good that anyone with a semi appreciation for skateboarding can see the awesomeness of skateboardings progression thanks to him and Chris Pastras and ?????..

    Im so stoked you know this! My Mother was the first one who told me about that when I was big into skating. I still have yet to see the movie Drawing Flies from 1996. It was from the View Askew Production company. It also had Chris Pastras, Jason Lee, Ethan Suplee, and Jason Mewes. Its awesome to see how far back these people go back, and to see both Lee and Suplee working on My Name Is Earl together.

    I also heard that Lee's agent made him promise via contract that he would stop professionally skating when he started to get more into acting... pretty sad.

    I had not heard that about Jason Lee and his agent. Speaking of deals similar to that did you know Joe Rogan used to fight mma and then the producers at Fear Factor got sick of him showing up bruised, bloodied, etc that they offered him some stupid amount of money to stop? But back to Jason Lee....what's the film he was some rich guy but had that bitching ramp set up in the film from his office to downstairs? I gotta find that one and add it to my Netflix!

    I had heard that Joe Rogan was a fighter. I don't watch too much MMA stuff, but I love Fear Factor. I tried looking on his IMDB for that movie you are talking about, but cant seem to put my finger on it. Ill keep looking though and let you know if I find something on that.

    Jason Mewes also used to be straight edge.. or at least that's according to the little fun fact that came in the Reve HQ newsletter a few months back.

    I know you all are discussing things he wrote, but no mention of the "An Evening with Kevin Smith" stuff? It's pretty fucking brilliant for any KS fan.

    "An Evening with Kevin Smith" was a fantastic. I might not like his current thought of directing, but his writing ability is unmatched in scripts and comics.

    Kevin Smith also has a podcast called "SModcast", I have found it to be as equally hilarious as the "Evening with" bits. I also thought Clerks 2 was pretty damn good, I feel that it had its own continuity. You would not have to of seen the first Clerks movie to enjoy it. I think that the topical humor is spot on. Does anyone remember him from the teen show DeGrassi Junior High?

    I know he named his daughter after one of the characters. That's about it. I really don't like degrassi.

    I could never stomach my way though the sap enough to watch it either. I guess Jay and Silent Bob had a part in the later ones. I always wondered how they dumbed it down for a teen show.

    I love Kevin Smith's work. That being said, I can't bring myself to watch Jersey Girl or Cop Out. My wife actually just asked me 5 minutes ago if I had any interest in adding Cop Out to the Netflix queue. There is something about that I really don't trust, even though Tracy Morgan is a riot. 30 Rock is my favorite show right now, and he had the absolute best part in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, as everyone's favorite crack dealer Pumpkin Escobar.

    Any fan of these films should pick up the graphic novel "Tales from the Clerks". Epic. Answers all the questions any true Kevin Smith fan has ever had, such as "What really happens during Julie Dwyers funeral?" and " Why do Jay and Silent Bob reference Walt Flanigan's dog?". Good Stuff.
