  1. Since Chicago Tattoo has been on the same 2 blocks for almost 40 years we get alot of people who come in with old work from Cliff Raven and Dale Grande so i try to take photos of these tattoos to document them. I often see old timers walking around the neighborhood or in the grocery store and see their tattoos and try to ask about them and photo them, there is just something about talking to old dudes about their tattoos that gets their attention and for the most part gets them into talking about where they got in and when and sometimes they can remember who it was. Im sure we all do this so i wanted to start a little thread and put up pics of old tattoos that we have all documented. The first three tattoos where done at Cliff Raven Studios (Chicago Tattoo) by Cliff Raven in approximately 1970.. since i cant figure out how to make these images larger you can click on them to get a better look. i look forward to the pics Nick
  2. Looks like hes working out of Taylor St in Chicago. If your a fan of his work find his face book page, hes posting some cool art and it seems hes doing a little more self promotion. He is one of that tattooers that years ago I told myself I wanted to get work from, and that was before I really got serious about getting tattooed. I hope our paths cross sometime next year.....even if I have to fly to Chicago. SOoooo, I was wondering who has some work from him that you would be willing to post?? Deno has a crazy skull/thing on his arm that I couldn't look at enough times when I was at the Montreal convention. His work isn't extremely common to see online(and I like that about it) but anything would be cool (but I respect keeping it offline.
  3. So in response to recent inquiries about Chicago and its place in tattoo history and to try to up the ante here at The Last Sparrow Tattoo Forum I will try to breakdown what I know and have acquired about tattooing in Chicago from early on up until present day. All of this will revolve around the history of Chicago Tattoo because honestly I don’t know or care to know about any other present day shops in the city. This of course will give a broad range of information at first because most of the photographic history was lost to the trash or to the flea markets at the time. The stories of South State Street are very few, 99% of the tattooers that dominated that street in its hey day are long gone. There are a few still left and their stories are amazing, some look upon those times fondly as the last truly honky tonk time in tattooing other look upon South State as Chicago’s tattoo demise. The 4-block area of South State Street in Chicago from the early 1900s to the mid 1960s was considered the worst red-light district that ever existed in this country to date. It consisted of skid row flophouses, porn theatres, liquor stores, wino bars, shooting galleries, arcades, and of course in every corner of every arcade were the tattoo shops. Chicago was supposedly home to hundreds of tattooers through out the early years. All making tattoos cutting their chops and making their bones on the abundance of fresh sailors from Great Lakes Naval Base just north of Chicago, and the working class folks looking to let loose on South State Street. These first photos show the very early days of south state notice in one of the photos the Armed Services recruiting center, this later became and Army Navy Surplus store. This is one of the main reason I believe that attracted the tattooers to South State they had a fresh abundance of young men signing up to serve their country and at that time service men especially sailors and tattoos went hand in hand. These other three photos show the burlesque barkers looking to get customers in to see the show Thanks for your interest, more to come later
  4. Hi everyone Just wanted to say a quick hello, I'm just beginning a career in the tattoo field and feel so privileged at the opportunity to join this very special family. I'm the personal assistant to an amazing artist here in Chicago. We travel a lot and frequent conventions but starting to branch out solo sans shop. As I continue to legitimize my artist and make the leap into so many of the new outlets for not only his tattoo work but also art work I'd really appreciate advice from people who have been there already. Just set up an Instagram and etsy shop but really interested in submitting flash to magazines and websites but a little unsure how all that works. Anyway, enough rattling. Hello and thank you for reading! Mina
  5. Some what empty of an idea so far, but my next tattoo is going to go on my forearm. And I was thinking of a cardinal, or some sort of bird in flight. I would like for it to be a tad traditional looking when it comes to shading, and the feathering & all but still hold its own when it comes to being a bird tattoo. What I'm asking, so that I can draw it out myself and present it to the tattoo artist I may go to (don't worry, I'll be getting their exact opinion on what I've posted now), in your opinion what may be the best positioning for this? The size I was thinking would probably be at least 6 in.
  6. Planning on getting my next tattoo sometime soon.. As in a week or so & I'm looking for a shop that I could hopefully regular whenever my budget is up. Would really like to hear about some well done work but at a decent cost, and not all that far from my area ;-) which by the way, is near Midway Airport. Or near Cicero, whichever helps capture the image better. Lets go!
  7. So Chad and I were talking and one of our common interests are fine dining establishments. We joked that the first LST meetup will be at Tyler Florence's new restaurant, Wayfare Tavern....they have a room with a pool table...could you imagine 20 or so heavily tattoed diners converging on the restaurant...tyler would FREAK! Chad mentioned some of the places he is hitting up soon... so i thought I would start a thread for other gourmands....what are some of your favorite places to go. we hit up spruce alot in san francisco. mainly because it is a quick commute for us and parking is a breeze. the service is also impeccable and i LOVE the beignets. the apps and salads are better than their entrees, but i heard the burger there is amazing. we haven't gone out alot in the last 2-3 years because we keep on popping out babies, but i really want to hit morimoto's new place soon... what are your favorite restaurants and places you want to go.

    Chicago!

so i'll be headed to Chicago next week (oct 5-11) and i thought i'd ask if anyone had any recommendations for things to check out and do. i'll be going to Riot Fest all 5 nights so my evening plans are set, but i'll be there by myself and with lots of time to explore the city during the day. i think i'm pretty set as far as museums go, but i have no clue on where to go for good record shopping, used clothing, thrifting or anything else fun. i would love to get tattooed while i'm there, but unfortunately, i don't think i'll have the money to do so. any suggestions?
  9. I'll be here til Friday! If anyone sin the area come on by!
  10. Alright so I know a lot of people get Dia De Los Muertos stuff tattooed on them because it is "cool" or "in" but there are those that truly love, understand, and celebrate it. So in the spirit, memory, and celebration of Dia De Los Muertos who on LST celebrates Dia De Los Muertos wether it is personally or goes to your local town/cities event? Who has Dia De Los Muertos tattoos and yes pictures are always appreciated? Etc? What does your Dia De Los Muertos look like? Here is the info for the SF one that I try attend every year for the past thirteen years up here. I was introduced to Dia De Los Muertos as a kid by the local latino kids I ran with for a few years and have since made it one of my most celebrated and enjoyed "holidays". It is unfortunate but this year may not be what it historically has been due to finances and other reasons of the Mission becoming gentrified. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence as mentioned below raised and donated some money. If you are unfamiliar with them they are pretty awesome and very very supportive and active in many Bay Area fundraising events so encourage you to check them out as well. http://www.dayofthedeadsf.org/
  11. Hello all. Im a tattooer in Chicago, have been since 04. Found the site via Nick C and Mario over at CTC's facebooks.. Site looks great. I hope to network with some new people and reconnect with some old... I am a partner at The Code of Conduct here in Chicago. We are off 11th and State Street not too far from where it all began in this City. Our shop is a combo tattoo shop and boutique, which has been looked down at by some more seasoned artist. But fuck it its one of the only way I could get the permits and the down town proper. Plus we are in the heart of 4 colleges so we are giving the kids what they want. And its not a shitty sctratcher shop like alot of the others in this City. All our artist know what they are doing... check out the site. www.thecodeofconduct.com also looking to check out machine builders.. I seem to only stick to the few I know. Time to branch out a bit. -jason hoodrich

  14. calbee

    Greetings

Hello, my name is Calbee, I've been getting tattooed for the last twenty years, but due to a severe lack of funds still have tons of nice big pink spots. If you're in Chicago, tattoo out of somewhere other then your kitchen and wanna get into some trouble hit me up. I love giving tattoo artists vague ideas and seeing how they solve a visual problem. I can normally sit for about 4-5 hours without to many breaks, longs walks on the beach where we talk about our dreams and feelings afterwards are optional. I've also been a professional photographer for the last twenty years too so if you need a good portrait hit me up. I also just started scanning my live music archives and selling prints, so if you like that sort of thing let me know and I can send you a link.
