  1. The Full Back Piece Thread prompted me to start a new one about what the experience was/is like of getting your entire back done. I've actually always been extremely nervous about starting (my goal is to start before I'm 30) because I'm convinced my back is weirdly sensitive.. SO. How's it been for all of you who either have full coverage or are on your way? How's the process? How incredibly draining is it? How much have you had to plan, artistically? Mentally? Physically? Financially?
  2. Would it be unreasonable to ask a tattoo artist to recreate a painting that a friend did, as a tattoo? I could see an artist not wanting to copy someone else's work instead of drawing it themselves, but i also would like to have my friends design as a tattoo, so i was wondering what other people thought of this idea, or if it was something that most people wouldnt do?
  3. I personally don't care for this style of tattooing, but I'm curious to hear what the rest of you think. To my untrained eye it looks like it's applied decently enough, but I suspect the "no outline" thing won't age with dignity...
  4. The "Multiple Sessions" thread got me thinking about tattoos and healing plus my own trying to heal my elbow ditch right now. For those who don't know the elbow "ditch" is the inside of your arm where it bends so the tattoo/skin is always rubbing with almost every movement all day even as you sleep as well as I type right now. I wake up to the sheets and pillows having blood spots, god knows how many sheets I've ruined over the years from getting tattooed. I can only imagine back tattoos multiply this sheet process. A constant waking up in the morning pealing the sheets away. Anywho, I'll enjoy that when the time comes... So what are the most difficult spots you've had to deal with in the healing process of getting tattooed. Also for tattooers, what are the spots you notice heal the worst due to their potentially difficult healing process due to location? Do you take the healing process in mind when you lay a stencil on too so the less intricate parts are in these locations? Lastly from me for now, anyone got any tricks they use when healing potentially difficult spots while they sleep or elsewhere? I've been trying to sleep with my arm straight which keeps me waking very often so don't think it's much of a trick, ha.
  5. I would like some tips on the best tattoo books.. looked thru iron will when i was at skull n sword but dident buy it! so im ordering it as soon as i afford it! also looking forward to the Bloodwork book from Adrian and ATAK,been following the blog and it looks awsome.. which books is a must for you?
  6. So I've heard some tattoo artists say that they can't stand stinky feet or stinky breath, what bugs you the most?

  8. As I mentioned in my earlier posts I've been doing a lot of thinking about what I'd like to get tattoo-wise in future (I currently have none) and am really the kind of guy who plans all his moves out in advance. I love japanese-style tattoos and have thought about a Japanese chest plate and half-3/4 sleeve. This would have no real meaning for me, I just love the art. I've also been thinking about stuff that would have more meaning for me and been thinking about maybe a portrait of my Grandmother, a rose for my Mum, and maybe other bits a pieces for other people etc. Being a bit of a symmetry freak I'd want the same coverage on the other arm. So... what I'm wondering is if the two different styles are going to look ok together, or if they'll clash really badly and just look wrong? Does anyone have any photo examples of where this kind of mix has worked successfully? Thanks!:)
  9. Recently I've had a bunch of army people telling me about new changes in their policy on tattoos. Between what they have told me & some googling tells me that 670-1 will now prohibit any visible tattoos when wearing a uniform, which is different than a few years ago when they allowed neck & back of hand tattoos. Any new recruits will be barred, and people that are already grandfathered in will be prohibited from re-enlisting, unless they are removed. What I haven't been solid answer on yet is if the army will be paying for removal. Sleeves are also prohibited. That one is REALLY gonna screw me. I might not even be able to finish ones I have in progress, both on in-towners and clients that are currently deployed. Stuff I'm excited to do. Every shop in town is gonna take a huge blow because of this. Even besides how it affects me it sucks to see these people get screwed like that. Upcoming changes to AR 670-1 This next thing is where is gets tricky; someone came in to see about getting a really well done jerry design of a topless geisha & dragon on his forearm covered up, much to his dismay. Because it makes naughty thoughts or something like that. Kid tells me that anything consided sexually explicit or creates 'impure thoughts'. I wish I could remember the phrasing he used. Thing is, who decides what is considered 'impure'? He was saying he wasnt even allowed to put a bikini on the geisha. Do we have any army people here? If so, can you give me the specifics on this?
  10. I saw this video recently of the 3-day sleeve. I was just trying to imagine how hard it is to sit for that long, and get tattooed so much in such a short amount of time. Does anybody here have any stories of a marathon session like this? http://vimeo.com/18984844
  11. This one's for artists and collectors alike. What's the longest you've ever sat for a tattoo and (for artists) the longest you've ever worked on a client? I've had several 5-hour sessions, which is kinda pushing it, but once, I sat for 9 hours. Without a break. Overnight. File under never again. The worst part is that I didn't really plan for a long session--it just ended up taking forever. I'm sure some of you have some crazy stories, possibly involving Shige, Filip Leu, and/or Chris Trevino. :) For the record, the last 4 tattoos I got took under 3 hours, combined. Much more fun!
  12. The who, what, where, when, and why of your first tattoo with a picture pls?!?
  13. Not every tattoo has to have a deep, symbolic meaning. Some of my favorites are actually quite juvenile and stupid. Only post if it's actually a tattoo you personally have done or have on your own body. Oh yeah, and make me laugh! Here's mine to start it off. To really get this joke you need to know it's located on my right inner thigh  Tattoo by Juan Puente 2008
  14. I searched and couldn't find anything. What stuff has been blowing your mind lately? (other than the fact that there hasn't been a thread about this yet) Matt Mooney Ron Henry Wells Chad Koeplinger
  15. Couldn't find a thread and my stomach is up next so would be interesting to see some cool stomach designs
  16. OK. Due to the Jonathan Shaw topic (here) I thought I will get some conversation going on about blackwork. I will just call everything that has spawned from Tribal style work blackwork. My favorites are Jun Matsui (3 pic), Thomas Hopeer (4 pic) and the likes. Too many to name. Marisa Kakoulas has a great info piece in the article relating to her book Black Tattoo Art: Modern Expressions of the Tribal. I will quote it here. Needles and Sins Tattoo Blog | Black Tattoo Art Book Release I really love the part where mister Raven said And I think that is what really draws me to this style aswell. How a great black work backpiece for example makes the human seem like something else. A myth perhaps. Some type of otherworldly hero. And it doesn't just have to link the wearer to something old. Like for example the Leo Zulueta backpiece (1 pic, Rory is the one in the right) on Rory Keating conveys a feeling similar to Queequeg from Moby Dick (Queequeg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) when for example the one by Volker (2 pic) is a futuristic anti goverment operative who bears the mark of the resistance. It's his armor of choise. But both have a strong romantic feel to them. The chosen ones. It fits (when done right) the wearer perfectly. Perhaps better than any other style of tattooing. Do you agree or disagree? edit. The title should be Blackwork, not black work
  17. So I have a couple questions for the folks that are completely covered. Were you happy to be totally tattooed and have a completed suit or a little bummed out cause you couldn't get any more tattoos? I've seen quite a few people just start slappin new ones on top of old ones for a 2nd coat...thoughts?
  18. Going to get my knee done, what do you guys suggest?
  19. So we've got a lady head thread, how about an entire lady body thread! Here's one that I've always liked! It's by Mike Wilson. And if you knew the guy in the photo, please know I mean no disrespect by posting this, he was a friend of mine to, and he had and did some awesome tattoos. I really like the simplicity of the design. The shading is so minimal yet so effective.
  20. My experience has been that the tattoos I have that have the most visual impact are the ones with good amount of skin around them. When I first started getting tattooed about 4 years ago, I was on a mission for coverage. The more time goes by (and the more near-sighted I become ), I realize how hard it is to make out anything in full sleeve pieces with filler unless you're up pretty close. Does anyone else feel it's important to have negative space/skin between your tattoos?
  21. I was just reading Sboyer's response in the thread What tattoo designs can you never see enough of? and realized we have no Rock of Ages thread so here we go... I remember when I fell in love with this tattoo design while working at Juxtapoz and we had just printed the Jason Mcafee Rock of Ages poster and just being amazed. For some reason that poster really sticks out in my mind. I tried to locate a picture of it for here but can't find it so if you have one please post. While trying to find the image I did locate this video of Freddy Corbin at Temple Tattoo doing a Rock of Ages. It says it was done four years ago but guessing it has to be older as Scott Sylvia is shown in the background tattooing there as well??? It was posted by a user named xhooliganx and I know we have a user on our tattoo forum by that name as well so if it is the same, thanks. Since the video is labeled part one is there a second one that shows the tattoo or do you have a picutres? Part One Here are some other threads with Rock of Ages talk and/or pictures: Was tattooing as popular 100 years ago as now? What's your favorite tattoo on your body? Full Back Tattoo Designs Religious and Spiritual Tattoo Designs Fastest Tattooers New Tattoo Idea, Rock of Ages Lets hear and see them......
  22. Searched, and didn't find a thread on wolf tattoos, so I decided to make one. Daryl Rodriguez, Hold It Down Tattoo: John Reardon: Chad Koeplinger: Jelle: Daniel Trocchio: Kim-Anh Nguyen-Dinh: Stefano Cera: Clay McCay: Erick Lynch: Ron Henry Wells: Steve Byrne: Jef Whitehead:
  23. I understand each person is unique in their healing process and potentially holding ink and color tattoos better than others. But what are the worst things tattoo customers can do to their tattoos right after getting tattooed and long term? Thanks!
  24. Would be cool to see some Mothers Tattoos/Flash etc. Looking for ideas...
  25. Found this article today, its a few months old but interesting nonetheless. "What do you think when you see a woman with a tattoo? This is not a question with a right or wrong answer; this is a question of perception. So I guess, the real question is, “How do you perceive a woman with a tattoo in society? Does it affect how you judge her?” Of course it does. As much as a woman’s blond hair or pretty face leads her to be judged. But a tattoo isn’t the result of DNA, it’s a choice, an assertion. But how did tattoos become taboo for women, and most importantly where can we go from here?..." Guest Post: Feminism & Tattoos: A Woman For all the ladies out there, do you feel like you are percieved differently due to your tattoos? Heavily tattooed women, if you didnt notice a difference with your first few pieces, have you noticed something different the more covered you become? I want to hear from the gents as well! What do you think? Do you noticed more women getting slag about their work than men?
