  1. So I know each person is different and sex can also come into play as females are "built" to handle more pain than males. So lets see what the most painful spot is to get tattooed? For me, it was the ribs and right now the inside upper thigh near my well you know. The under side of the arm near the arm pit tickled as I am a very ticklish person but know this can hurt for lots of people. So lets hear it and of course if you've got pictures you know we want to see them!
  2. This may be a weird thread but what the hell. I've always been interested in people who are tattooed who are in a relationship with someone who is not tattooed at all. Unlikeyourown's feminism and tattoos thread got me thinking about this. So a.) are you in one and have you been in one? b.) Have you thought about this or noticed a change in preference since you've gotten older..? and c.) do you feel like there would be any kind of disconnect there? It seems like such a personal thing as opposed to say, an interest in old typewriters, I wonder if it would make any difference at all. I'm guessing not, since I know people in these relationships. When I was younger (and only had a few tattoos) I used to not be into girls with tattoos at all. Now I think I'd only be into tattooed ladies.. as evidenced by my tattooed future wife. Does it ever make a difference? Anyone??
  3. So I've heard some tattoo artists say that they can't stand stinky feet or stinky breath, what bugs you the most?

  5. 4 laser sessions over 1 year period Wish I had a before photo first photo is after the laser, but was black line work to start with, still looks like a cover up but was able to get some color in it as well
  6. This one's for artists and collectors alike. What's the longest you've ever sat for a tattoo and (for artists) the longest you've ever worked on a client? I've had several 5-hour sessions, which is kinda pushing it, but once, I sat for 9 hours. Without a break. Overnight. File under never again. The worst part is that I didn't really plan for a long session--it just ended up taking forever. I'm sure some of you have some crazy stories, possibly involving Shige, Filip Leu, and/or Chris Trevino. :) For the record, the last 4 tattoos I got took under 3 hours, combined. Much more fun!
  7. The who, what, where, when, and why of your first tattoo with a picture pls?!?
  8. So to all the tattooed people out there....how are your experiences with being tattooed in the workplace? I work in the definition of corporate America and find tattoos to be far and wide (as much as I can see). I have ran into a few people with visible work but usually they "get away with it" due to insane skill at their job. I once met an administrator with a panther smack across his throat! I understand from many conversations I've had with the people I work with that tattoos are considered "bad" or "poor decisions", and I usually defend the nameless tattooed people that are commented on while in such a conversation. This being said, I will not stop my dream of being covered, (to hell what they say!). I can do my job regardless with what my body looks like. I just am waiting for the day when someone makes a comment such as mentioned before and I can just lift a pant leg or roll a sleeve up and say..."so, am I a 'bad person' as well?"
  9. Truthfully, what types of tattoos do you get asked to do the you dread doing? Do you do them, or do you just say "I don't do that?"
  10. Had a pretty hilarious "tattoo nightmare" last night. Don't feel obligated to wade through my subconscious insecurities here, but I bet I'm not alone here and I'm sure you tattooers have work nightmares. Anyone wanna share? (C'mon @Perez, you can't tell me those loft murals didn't invade your dreams..) So here's the dream: Went to a reputable shop to get two small tattoos and asked for the line drawing because it was my wife's birthday and the tattooer wrote Happy Birthday on it for whatever reason. He said he wasn't sure I would treat it right and I promised I would frame it and give it to her as a birthday gift. One of the tattoos was on my leg so I simply detached my legs from my torso ("I can't believe I never thought of this sooner!") so I could sit and watch without feeling a thing. Everything seemed cool, and then I went to pay and it was super crowded. The counter guy was talking really quietly and I finally got close enough to hear him say, "Ninety fifty." Huh? "Nine thousand fifty dollars." I tried to explain I just got two smallish tattoos, and only brought about a thousand bucks with me, which I figured would be more than enough. He said the tattooer was concerned because I was disrespectful and had some really "questionable work." The other people behind the counter (there were like a dozen and they were all dudes.. true nightmare..) were all just kind of talking and the one dude said, "Listen, they're all arguing about it now and it's gonna be a few weeks before they decide on a price." Right then, I realized I'd scheduled an appointment with a dude doing a guest spot for that day.. though apparently I decided to just get em done earlier? And then the dude came in the door and I decided I needed to get the fuck outta there. So I booked.
  11. i know you guys have em, so lets hear em. hell they dont even have to be apprenticeship stories. just crap youve witnessed or put up with at a shop. i apprenticed under this methed out biker fellow that claimed to be related to charles manson. he did look like him and was a nut job just like him as well. i didnt even know about meth til i started working there. he once decided to teach this guy to tattoo in exchange for this huuuuge rock of meth that he brought with him from kansas city. then he figured it would be a good idea to cut it and start sellin it out of the shop. kansas city guy is now dead. after a few day binge, bossman was doing an american flag on this truck driver. he outlined it, shaded in the blue where the stars are then proceeded to fill in the red stripes. he did the first two stripes, then onto the third. while doing the third, he started going down as opposed to across. i was watching him do this tattoo but was very much a newbie. i didnt say anything figuring he knew what he was doing. he did a little more then tells ol dawg "lets take a break, you can go outside and have a smoke" he does and bossman starts walking to the back of the shop. i follow. then he says, "holy shit dude, i just fell asleep doing that tattoo!" he did a couple of bumps and downed a mountain dew. came back to the tattoo and proceeded to black shade the shit out of it! truck driver never questioned him and left a happy customer. to me it was just another day in the shop. there are tons more stories, but lets hear somebody elses. Dean and Scott, i KNOW you got some!!
  12. "Heroes" starlet Hayden Panettiere likes to show off the tattoo she has running down her left side, but it seems to have been misspelled. Often visible above her dresses for the first word, the tattoo in full reads "Vivere senza rimipianti," which is meant to be "to live without regrets" in Italian. Unfortunately for Hayden, her tattoo reads "rimipianti" instead of "rimpianti," adding an extra "i." here is a shot for the fellas on here:
  13. I've been reading through all of the threads and everything that people have been posting and i havent stumbled upon anything that talks about what artists like to see when it comes to good client behavior. i am a new tattoo collector and before actually visiting a shop for the first time all i knew was what i saw on tv from the reality shows like Miami or LA ink. so i like to hear from anyone on what they like to see when it comes to well behaved clients. ( walk ins, consultations, day of the appointment) i did see that "customer from hell" post and even though it was sooo funny, i felt so bad for the dude in the blue flame shirt
  14. When I get tattooed I usually eat something good and filling and show up with a seltzer or coffee or juice or all three. I've been doing this for years now and realized it's become kind of a ritual.. making sure I have enough time, etc. Afterwards, I almost always pick up a single Budweiser tallboy. Got me thinking because I know everyone has their rituals. Mine are more like "things I usually do" rather than rituals, but I really look forward to doing them on tattoo days. Pushups, meditating, any good OCD stuff??
  15. So I know there are lots of myths out there for tattoo after care, so I would like to open up the discussion to what has worked for you? Every bodies chemistry is unique so lets hear it....... About three to four hours after getting tattooed I wash my new tattoo with warm water and soap then until it heals I use non-scented, no vitamins Eucerin Lotion. This is the equation that I have learned works best on my body after many attempts and this heals quickest.
  16. so i live in wisconsin. there is absolutely no shortage of obese people here. this topic is NOT a bash on them. i was tattooing a gay bear the other day. had him sit in a chair to outline his half sleeve. i need him to lay down to outline the inside of his arm. he layed down, no problem. i did need him to sit up for a second to readjust something. he got off the massage table and sat in the middle. we heard a very loud SNAP!!!!! he sat down and i told him to stand up. i turned the thing over and one of the wooden support bars snapped in two! he was mortified!!!!!!! sooooo embarrassed. i was just relieved that he wasnt hurt. hes a cool guy getting some cool tattoos. i was able to finish the outline with him sitting down. so i have to get a replacement table. but now im super scared to get another like the original one because i dont want it to break while a big person is on it. ive been looking around online and found one made with metal legs. welded aircraft aluminum. anybody have any tips on a massage table that i can fold up? ive been freaking out over this the last day and a half. i just dont want anyone to get hurt. im sure i tattoo an obese person 3 or 4 times a month. by obese i guess i mean over 300 pounds
  17. Let me first state that I will not besmirch the name of several fine artists with a "Who is the slowest tattooer?" thread. Instead, let's discuss the fastest of the fast. I'll try to limit this to personal experience, but feel free to mention lightning-fast artists you've witnessed, too. Our very own Scott Sylvia inspired this thread. I was at Forever Tattoo in Sacramento over the weekend and Ian Carder showed me the Rock of Ages backpiece that Scott put on him. He said it took about 15 hours. I guess I should stop being surprised at this point, but damn. Horitaka is also really fast. I have a black and gray falcon from him that takes up most of my shin. It took him an hour. Theo Mindell put a huge dragon head on my knee in only 3 hours--and he kept apologizing for taking so long! I'm not a tattooer, but it seems like the knee cap is moving target. That skin shifts all over the place. And I've never been tattooed by Filip Leu, but no fast tattooer thread would be complete without him. I was lucky enough to see some of the work he did while at Diamond Club, like this tiger that (I think) he completed in 5 hours: Along the same lines, I've never been tattooed by Robert Atkinson, but holy hell, is that guy fast.
  18. I can't work without music playing. I'm sure the rest of you are the same. What are you currently listening to at your workplace? Also, what do you think is appropriate/tasteful? I like to listen to mellow stuff if I am working an early shift. Maybe cut loose a little later in the day. Lately a lot of 60's reggae, Blues, 70's and 80's punk. Not so into tattooing to crazy Grindcore , Death Metal, or Stoner Rock. I also think some of my customers would rather not be tattooed to real loud, brash music. What are YOU currently listening to? Also do you care about what your customers think of your musical tastes?
  19. The who, what, where, when, and why of your first tattoo? Pls include a picture if possible as we would love to see it!
  20. How far are you willing to travel to get tattooed at a certain shop? And what shop?
  21. How did/do you choose your first tattoo(s)? What did it mean to you. Are you happy with it or would you do it differently today? Can we see a picture and hear the story that assisted you in placing it on your body?
  22. Tattoo stigmas? Do they still exist? Do you have one or some? Have you been on the other side of a stigma? If so, where (city) and what was the stigma?
  23. This comes after a comment Julio made: "this guy rolled through the shop in san jose once. kinda rockabilly type with is rockabilly girl. he did have a mustache and goatee going on. but under the mustache you could see he had a mustache TATTOOED on him!!!!!!! it was kinda in the shape of the pringles guy. he wanted a day of the dead sugar skull of him and his girl with a dagger. i drew one with the silly mustache. he never came back to get it tattooed. i think i offended him with the funny mustache on the skull that represented him." There have gotta be more folks holding on to drawings like this that never happened!
  24. The thing I love most about knuckle tattoos is the need to be clever within a predefined container of 8 (or 10) letters. Plus it's just some good ol fashion stupid fun to come up with new ones! I think my current favs are: BOOK WORM and TRUE GENT
