I first met Juan Puente in 19-something-or-other at the San Diego convention at the Bahia. The convention was righteous, I believe that it was the one Zeke Owens rode his bike cross country to attend. It was the first time Juan and I ever hung out, and we have been comrades ever since. We have worked together at two shops and have traveled the world together, including Japan, Italy, France, England, Holland, Bali, Mexico, even the cultural mecca of Long Beach. i've been a song lyric fanatic for years. if a song has good lyrics, but the music's just meh, i'll still love it for the lyrics. here's a list of what i hope to get done so far:

I just got my second tattoo from Juan. This one is a raven which stretches from shoulder blade to shoulder blade. The other is an old open book wrapped in vines being torn open by an eagle's claw on the left shoulder/upper arm. Both tattoos are beautifully shaded and perfectly done. San Jose's Convention of the Tattoo Arts is now at the Hyatt Regency by the San Francisco Airport and we are now calling it the SFO Convention. "Sabbatical" is a word I like to use a lot because it seems like such a nice set up for artists that tattooers don't really exploit. We have been offering the shop for some time as a place like this, taking a set of tattooers during the summer who can work as much or as little as they like for a minimal, cost-covering daily rent. This summer was the first attempt, I feel like it was a big success.
I tried pretty hard to find a nice location for my shop and actually got my dream spot: Harbor
I'm intrstd in what people feel are the qualities they see most often in their mentors or respected peers in the industry; and similarly the qualities that sem to lead to successful business across the board.
Skill obviously will play a part in my idea of a good tattooer, so that's a given.
Sammy Winston has contributed to the Bay Area Hardcore and Punk scenes since he was a teenager from being in bands (All Bets Off then Grace Alley), promoting shows, producing albums, writing articles for various magazine & zines to now owning and running Spiderghost. He's a man of many trades and I gurantee you what he has done for our scene out here has trickled into your scene at some point in some way cause he is just that in love with music and bands that his reach is endless.

Ive talked to Scott and to Chad about this a bunch but I would like to hear how others find ways to handle family time, kid time, wife/husband time, and do all the things needed to try to keep up on painting and doing decent tattoos and handling shop BS all the while not losing your shit.
It’s a rough go and with our families and careers are not getting any smaller I would like to know what others do to balance it all out.
