Layout Options

For those of you who have full scale back pieces; shoulders to lower back, shoulders to glutes, shoulders to the back of the thighs, would you recommend to someone. What layout made you want to get one of the three options? I find that it would make more sense to go to shoulder to glutes (ass) if you were getting something big like a dragon.

Long story short, I'm about 5"10 and can't decide in the future if my back piece would be better from my back down to my thighs or stop at my glutes. I am planning on getting a dragon w/fudo sword...I would like to hear from guys that do big pieces. I already have my whole front done and need to get my background done via ribs and pelvis area up to my lats (front shoulder) to fill in.

Hi,

When I do backs, particularly in a Japanese style, I don't consider ending higher than the ass, especially if there is background.`

But the question I ask everyone who is not sure if they want to include the thighs too is "If it ends on your ass, what will you do on your thighs?" Personally I love the look of the full back and thighs, which is what I have myself.

For easy-to-find reference, check out Taki's book 'Bushido' if you haven't already. There's some cool diagrams at the back that outline the shape of Japanese bodysuits. There are other, more comprehensive illustrations in harder to find, Japanese language books, but Bushido is great.

Good luck getting your ass tattooed though!

Hey, thanks for the insight, I have the Bushido book, I totally forgot it has that on the back! I kind of want to save space for some other people to tattoo on the back of my thighs, I'm running out of room LOL.

This a link to my back in progress' date=' which is also a Fudo Sword. There will be black background added, but none will go below the ass cheeks. And Stewart is right your ass will hurt like hell. Especially the top of the crack.[/quote']

That is fucking awesome, who is that doing that on you? Kind of looks like Jason Brooks but I can't tell, I really like it. Looks like we'll be back bro's in the future. I have a friend who got his back/ass done by Trevino and he told me all about it, not looking forward to that either man hahaha. Thanks for sharing !!!!!

Matt Arriola is doing my back. You have a good eye. Matt and Jason are friends. Jason did Matt's back (it is posted on the new Great Wave website). Is Nick Ley doing your back? I met him a couple of years ago, and he was a really nice guy, great tattooer.

Chris Trevino has a Fudo Sword on his website that may give you some ideas as well. It is on the guy with the full body suit, but you can still get an idea of the backpiece as its own tattoo.

Ahh ok, yeah I've seen on Jason Brook's old site Rock of Ages a nice back piece of a fudo sword a few years ago. I'm not sure who's doing my back yet, it's really up in the air with people. Some people I have in mind is Chad Soner, Nick, Jason, if I could afford it I would love if someone like Lehi or Horitomo do it :(. I found some good Fudo sword reference from the Fudo Exhibition photos I saw online, and in Chris Trevino's new book. Definately have to get the dragon trying to swallow the sword.

I went all the way to the thighs which also is a fudo dragon haha. In my opinion a large scale back piece just doesn't look right when you can see where it ends at the waist or lower back. I would say end at your ass since your planning more work on your thighs. Good luck on your piece!
