Heather McLean out of Strangeworld in Calgary, Canada

She did my Dutch girl sleeve, and portraits on my husband's feet (Salvador Dali and Jean-Paul Sartre). She's super rad and really nice, and definitely takes some influence from the great Steve Moore.

Her website is HBomb.ca : Tattoos

She does tonnes of art too, and makes sure to take sabbaticals for art purposes, so she's super hard to book.

She also has a bunch of rad prints up on Rivervalleyprinting - Heather McLean

The river valley print co. does lots of prints for a bunch of awesome Canadian tattoo artists

Evan Dowdell, Time Will Tell - Burlington ON. He's doing my back piece next year. Nearly a 14 month wait to book in with him.

Travis Mcgregor, Thrive Studios - Cambridge ON. I've had work done at this shop by a couple other dudes, and he was another consideration for my back.

Here are a few artists I follow that I think are under-recognized, or maybe I am just out of the loop.

Cam Davis Instagram THE most perfect roses I have seen

Drew Wilson Instagram Really cool "state" tattoos and a kick ass fly fisherman.

Dan Pemble Instagram WOW, check out his bears

Mark Stewart Instagram I have work from him

Koji Ichimura Instagram Really like this style

Just wanted to bump this back to the top because Brian David Macneil is impressing me right now and I don't remember seeing his name on here. There are so many lower-profile good tattooers in New England.

He worked in Philly years ago when he was starting out.I believe he went to art school in Italy, and his paintings are impressive. His Japanese work is really good too.

I think Brian Bruno, Jason Kundell, Kahlil Rintye, Jill Bonny and Kevin Leblanc who aren't huge self promoters are widely overlooked by the "main stream." This serves as a double edged sword in my opinion. In talking with some of these artists who intentionally avoid social media still have a steady stream of clients coming in for work. I also think there's something to be said for artists to gain the recognition we feel they deserve.

You also have the likes of Mike Roper who intentionally keep it low key. I would venture to say he's only known by the dedicated few but thats all by design.

In the end I don't think I'd change a thing. Its nice to get together with those who share the same vision of what tattooing mean to them, who appreciating good work and the artists who have withstood the change in culture. The dudes laying down great tats decade after decade without letting the latest trends in. Tattooing needs the "Brads" of the world are getting super pumped about their new water color hand tattoos from the coolest artist this week.

I love Christian Lanouette's work.  He's out of Montreal. https://www.instagram.com/christianlanouette/

My tattoo artist, Myra Oh, out of Jacksonville, FL: https://www.instagram.com/myraoh/

I don't know if these artists are under-recognized, but I'm pretty intrigued by all of the work coming out of Wonderland Tattoo in Portalnd.  I don't know that I will every try to get a piece done there since I prefer more traditional tattoos on me, but their work sure is pretty. Alice Carrier, Alice Kendall, and Kirsten Holliday:

Another one I'm not sure is under-recognized or that I'd want to be tattooed by, but whose work I really admire is David Hale.  His whole approach to tattooing is interesting, though he's taking a sabbatical right now unfortunately.  I have a print of his on my desk. http://davidhale.org/flesh/
