Ok to get tattooed 2 weeks after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, I just had a laparoscopic appendectomy 8 days ago. Everything went well. There were no complications. Normally I wouldn't consider getting tattooed for awhile due to possible immune system problems. The thing is, one of my favorite artists is in town next weekend. He moved from Mass to Brooklyn and if I don't go see him next week I may have to wait a year or so before he's around again. I just want to get a small piece of Dan Higgs flash on my arm nowhere near the site of the surgery. Do you guys think this would be ok or am I putting myself in danger? I know people are going to say "ask your doctor" but I'd like the advice of people who actually have and know about tattoos. Thanks in advance.

I'd still call your doctor and ask their opinion.  I'm betting that they might advise against it, you know docs and liability.  But, if I were in the same position, really wanted it and was in good health, I'd probably go ahead and do it.

My wife's an RN and I just asked her.  She said that she wouldn't think it would be a problem as long as you keep any appendectomy incision bandaged and clean your tattoo as recommended.

QQ for you - how big is the Higg's piece? Would you be sitting for over 2 hours? I'd say if you really feel good and it's on your arm, I'd go for it but don't bullshit yourself on how good you THINK you feel. Be really honest with yourself. No sense in crashing yourself if you really don't think that you are up for it!

It's the lantern from his '97 flash sheets if you're familiar with that. It's a pretty small piece. Probably take an hour or less. I'm feeling pretty well and leaning toward doing it.

    • Have an eagle on the back of my arm and some daggers on the side. I plan on doing an all black/grey patchwork sleeve. Wanting ideas for my upper arm as I’m not sure what to get.
    • try https://saniderm.com/       I use the https://saniderm.com/product/personal-size-10-2-in-x-2-yd-roll/     I have been using it for several years now on many tattoos, and this shit works great !  put it on 24 hours after the tattoo and leave it on for 4 or 5 days, take it off and it's healed.  you can sleep, wear any clothing, shower, whatever with it on. the first 24 hrs after the tattoo I use cocoa butter and saran wrap, wash it with anti-microbial soap every few hours, wash it once more, dry it with clean paper towels, apply the saniderm on clean dry skin. BAM  be sure and carefully shave the area to be tattooed and for several inches around it so the saniderm sticks good.   that's my method, I have been getting tattooed for many many years and have tried EVERYTHING over the years, and IMO this is the best way.
    • I have 12 tattoos and my last few have healed so badly that I am reluctant to get anymore done. I stick to the healing routine everytime using mild anti bacterial wash 2/3 times a day, make sure it is dry before I add a pure moisturiser. I used to use bepanthan but no matter how well I air dried it, it still gunks up. I then tried just coconut oil which is better but im still not healing well. My last 5 tattoos have been colour and I'm wondering if this may be the issue. So desperate to find a reason for it as I absolutely love my tattoos and have so many more I have spent a lot of time designing that I want done. Maybe I am destined to only get black fine line ones.
