  4. https://www.change.org/p/andrew-cuomo-david-carlucci-kenneth-zebrowski-new-york-state-department-of-health-change-nys-bill-s1421-2015-to-allow-the-use-of-disposable-ink-caps-in-tattooing?recruiter=368545516&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=copylink There has been a lot of fuss over this on instagram over the last few days and I feel like this is something worth sharing with the broader tattoo community as it can ultimately affect everyone. Whether you live in the state of New York and get tattooed there, whether you are a tattooer working in the state or planning to travel there for work/getting tattooed, or simply concerned that this law may set a beaurocratic precedent for other states, you should sign this petition. In a nutshell, the state passed a bill that requires all artists to use pre-packaged, single-use packets of tattoo pigment for every tattoo. Most of the concerns with this proposition are outlined in the petition, but basically it will make buying pigments very expensive, limit the quality and options of pigment available for the tattooer to buy, and will ultimately make the entire tattoo more expensive for the collector. While I feel that the health department plays an important role in holding artists accountable for safe work practices, I also feel that at the end of the day they usually have no idea what the fuck they're doing without input from the inside and this bill is no exception. Sign please! We got this!

Scott Sylvia is taking walkins tomorrow at Black Heart. I don't have the cash, but will look for the next one. Sounds like a ton of fun.

  6. If you're going to do a half sleeve now but want it to be a full sleeve later, you will need to plan it accordingly. Like if you do a koi on your upper arm then you have to think that everything below it will be in water.

  7. @heathenist I think "a trippy Jesus head" sounds pretty good as a request. Way better than "I want something to represent my family, my place in the world and how I developed as a person. Please also include a shark"

No I have not died, just been extremely tardy/slack in posting updates to LST. I am finally happy to say my Backpiece is finished. We did the final session last week and it was almost a bitter/sweet session. Still trying to deal with the reality of finishing it. It has taken roughly 18 months(we started in late Feb 2014 and finished late Aug 2015) Initially not only was I booking in tattoo appointments but I was also juggling the laser removal/lightening of 3 seperate pieces on my back/thigh. There were some fun times in the early days planning enough healing days between removal and addition. :) While I am happy not to have to take days off work, travel around 6 hours and spend another week after the session healing, I will miss the sessions. I initially said my Backpiece will be my last tattoo. I then said I will take a year off from tattooing and look into more work. Even after just 1 week of being finished my back I am already developing plans and looking at ideas/designs to continue to the front. I daresay after summer I will be booking a consult to start the front. Whoever said that tattooing is addictive was 150% correct. @Cork I love that post you did of the progress of your back. I am tempted to do the same. Was great to see in 1 post the progression of your back. Cheers, Jason. - - - Updated - - - That's gold, I think he is right. I thought my back was my last piece of work but about 1 week later after finishing my back I am already looking at designs to do on my front. I had always thought I don't have the pain tolerance to do my front. I am now thinking that I got through my whole back, the front can't be much worse. :) Jason.

  11. Yes, another topic about absolutely nothing but it helps me to get some rest in my head. Like the title, how did you come up with your username and does it have any meaning? For instance, for a couple of months i thought Moisttowelette was a girl/woman untill he posted a link of an interview of him. Needless to say, mind was blown. Or whenever I see the name Marleymission I am picturing some rastafarian guy. This is where my username comes from

Yo! Submissions had gone way down for a while, so we (the mods) decided a little break was in order. But fear not, I'm sure we'll be back in some shape or form in the near future :)

  16. The last few have been "hey I've got this weird space to fill and I liked seeing [example of previous work] from you, what do you think will fit?" I try to give a little direction since I have a good idea of what I like from my favorite tattooers, but sometimes the shape of the space is enough to prompt cool ideas that I couldn't come up with on my own, sketchbooks and flash are of course also good ways to get something unique.

  17. This is so crazy. At first I thought it was one of those rumors that exploded and you could snopes it and find out it's really bullshit. Oh boy, it's true. Thank you , Internet, for community exposure. Shit like this would actually land without it.

  18. Signed. When I first started getting tattooed I thought it was a bit troubling that tattooing isn't regulated at all where I live. Now I'm glad and hope it stays that way.

  20. My name is Joakim and my second name starts with a M too, so it's mmikaoj backwards. I registred somewhere a long time ago, having to add the extra m since just mikaoj was allready taken. It stuck since it's easy to remember and looks like gibberish to any non-scandinavian without a mirror.

@Shaggy I remember you posting about how difficult the process was, but it was clearly more than worth it because that is a spectacular tattoo. Good luck on getting your torso done. I'm a week away from the final session on my back, and other than a couple of small things, I think my torso will be next also. My chest is looking really bare these days.

  31. Wow, What an interesting thread! I guess for me, I would say tattoos are luxury items because I really could live without them. Sometimes I think that I couldn’t live without them, and they do have psychological benefits to me, and have helped me with self confidence and self-perception, but really, if my kids were starving, I would not have got them. Also there seems to be a lot of “black and white” in the definitions of luxury. Economist and dictionary definitions seem to tie consumption of luxury items to wealth or high income. But “average folks” - even people in lower income brackets - may have some luxury items. Is a cell phone a luxury? Is a flat screen TV a luxury? Maybe, maybe not. My view is that as long as you are feeding and educating your kids and family, and contributing to society in some way, and balancing your spending, it doesn’t matter. Say you have aways wanted an antique breakfront because you think they are beautiful. You say “someday I’m going to have one of those,” and you save for it, and watch for one of the right style and price and then one day one shows up in a antiques shop and you buy it. You love the way it looks in your dining room. Maybe it is the one piece of really nice furniture that you own, a focal piece. Is that a luxury? And while it is quite delightful to go into a house that is loaded with beautiful things everywhere you look, in some ways it is more meaningful and touching to go into the house where they have the one antique breakfront that they scrimped and saved to get. I’m sure some here on LST are have high wealth, and have tattoos. But I sense that a lot are not wealthy, so they scrimp and save, and cut expenses in other areas to get good tattoos that look exactly like the ones that the wealthy folks have. Are both luxury items? So maybe the key difference is “living a life of luxury” vs. having luxury items. Few of us live a life of luxury, but many of us can have some luxury items.

  32. I did not know what my my side/rib/hip tattoo was going to be until I met with the artist at the show,a couple years ago, and I had a first session yesterday on my arm/shoulder,I told the artist that I liked water lilies and skulls and told her she could do whatever she wanted with those basic elements, she loved it,I consulted with her a week ago and when she showed me the drawing,I was blown away and told her I love it and to do it that way,and IMO this tattoo is going to be amazing !

  33. This is the opinion I've always held: if you aren't a tattoo artist, then you shouldn't be designing tattoos for your friends. Especially if you don't know a thing about tattoos or tattooing to begin with. While there is nothing wrong with your art, it isn't really well suited to be applied as a tattoo, and any decent tattooer will redraw it. It blows my mind that people trust their non-tattooer friends to design tattoos for them (this shit happens sooooo often) but not the fucking people who have been tattooing for years and get paid to do that for a living. - - - Updated - - - Oh, yeah, and BHR rules. This fat line trend is bound to end soon enough anyways. Don't get me wrong I have some tattoos with pretty fat lines, and I'm sure they will hold up just fine. But I kinda think it's a little overboard sometimes, so much so that at a certain point you have to worry about how the fat line tattoos are going to age once the lines start to spread. BHR does really nice looking tattoos, I wouldn't worry at all about how they will age, in fact, I'd be surprised if his stuff doesn't age better than a lot of the overly fat lined tattoos.

Looked like a weirdo, but sunlight makes for easier tattoo photo's, I've found. Rad tattoos, everyone. Keep up the good work.

    Tiger tattoos

hundahl at oklahoma tattoo convention, drawn on, he did another tiger on a forearm before me on a cool guy that was killer and I thought about saying" man i will take a similar style and add a snake and be stoked" but just let him do his thing and I got a totally different look than what I pictured and couldnt be happier. He is a definitely someone to get a tattoo from and honestly I see him doing atleast one limb in the future if he is down. I originally thought my limbs would be one shots that i worry about tying together as I went but I am leaning towards asking him to do my whole left leg when time comes

    Tattooing over scars

I got my 3/4 sleeve tattoo to cover up the scars. Healing fine. I know a tattoo artist who was in a house fire when he was young. He covered his arms and most of his body with tats. It looks great and all healed well. Another great thing about tattoos. Cover up the bad times with some new art to celebrate the good times.
