  2. ok - I'm gonna be first to enter with my Robert Ryan Mandala Leopard which resides on my stomach - hopefully the leopard can qualify as its the closest thing to a panther that I have - no hard feelings if it doesnt meet the qualifications - done at Electric Tattoo in Asbury Park NJ - if you havent been tattooed by Robert or been to Electric - well...you're missing out - luckily I live only short drive from the shop - anyway - here you go...btw - this tattoo also made his awesome book - The Inborn Absolute :)

Soooo, after having lurked around for a while and posting some comments in other topics, I guess I'll make a proper introduction. I'm an aspiring apprentice from the Netherlands, 26. Before you all get your balls in a twist: I'm not here to find an apprenticeship or get information on what tattoo machine is the best buy for ruining someone's life. I haven't ever touched a tattoo machine and won't before my future teacher says I'm ready. I know that's somewhat of a taboo around here (and rightfully so), so I just had to get that out of the way. I might post some of the art I make for my portfolio in the 'Art Show' topic, as I already have, but that's it. If you are really interested in my drawings you can also look me up on instagram under the same name as I use here. (@exiny) I consider myself, as most of you do, a 'collector'. Got my first shitty tattoo during the emo-age at 14, wich I have covered now. Working to someday achieve a full (neo-traditional) body suit. I'm still ways away from reaching that goal though. So far only my left arm and chest is done. I got an appointment to start my right sleeve the 4th of februari. I mostly read LST at work when I have some spare time. I love tattoos. I love reading about tattoos, I love looking at tattoos and I love talking about tattoos. Tattoos. Any questions, just ask :) Also, here are some of my tattoos (done by Theo Zinas) :

  5. Let's keep this momentum going! My panther vs. snake by Bailey Hunter Robinson. This tattoo just celebrated it's 5th year looking out at the world. Done in one sitting with about 4 hours of tattoo time, while Bailey was still in NYC. This was my first big tattoo, and I'm still stoked on it everyday!!! Play on LST.

do you have an artist in mind? that is much more important than choosing the perfect google image/ stock photo to use as reference.

This one. Sorry for the mixing of the Queen and King. In my defense, it was early and I was just working on my first cup of coffee. Scale and placement are important - I would also prefer to see the shadow bold and black, not muted as in this example. IMHO, that makes it a more definitive statement and not just a mere shadow. Just my own $.02, though.

  9. I rate pain on a scale of 0-5. This little one, which took a while since this super guy was taking his time, barely registered as a 2. On my hip bone and towards the pube it reached a 3 which on my scale is "okay, I feel that". I feel like I didn't earn any sugar! What is wrong with me? Great therapy nonetheless. The tegaderm is holding but gushy underneath. I "managed" the area this morning at the gym...hoping that the heal goes well with this area. Looking forward to the reveal tomorrow afternoon! @pidjones

  10. These are both a year or more old at this point, but I never actually put them in this thread. The death's head moth was done by Oliver Peck when he guested at Kadillac Tattoo Mt. Airy (Philadelphia) last summer. Not the best picture, but he ended up slipping a lot of hot pink in there that wasn't at all what I'd expect from him. In the end, I loved it and was happy with how it came out. Getting tattooed by Oliver is as great as you'd expect. I had just gotten my shin done by Scott the week before and mentioned in our emails; Oliver came barging in yelling, "Lemme see that Scott tat!" right off the bat. After we were done, he actually took his shirt off and showed me a ton of his tattoos from Scott, Trevino, Rassier, Stell, etc. So fucking awesome. The torch moth was done by Keith Reed at X-Treme in West Chester, PA shortly after they moved to their new location. This was a "thank you" tattoo for helping them move. Keith is the best. Just an every day, no-bullshit, hard-working tattooer. Without him, I wouldn't know shit about tattoos. Not the best pic in the world, but @Dan and I were chatting back and forth and I realized I should probably upload em. Once that Grez knee you can see half done gets finished, I'll hit up the squidpants thread.

  11. Today I almost put children's toothpaste on my new tattoo instead of Aquaphor. Almost. The tubes were next to each other on the counter.

  12. So glad the contest is back, but amazingly, I don't have a panther yet. I've been saving my big panther for a cover up, but I don't see that coming any time soon. I'm pretty picky with my panthers, though. I can't wait to see some of these.

i dont like the shadow. keep it simple. if we are using google image as reference i would get something more like this: also make sure you go to a good artist or it might end up looking more phallic than you want.

  19. Looks like a great tattoo. You can always get it touched up after it heals. I don't think anything you are doing is making it do that. :-)

    Edge Day related tattoos

Grew up in ny in the 80's and had a cousin that was super into New York hard core. He explained to me back then that straight edge skin heads (as they were known back then) were the opposite of nazi skin heads. I took that to mean they weren't racist. He also said they abstained from booze and drugs. A noble course for sure. But they were also super into their lifestyle and weren't always nice to those who chose a different path. But still I appreciated them way more than the nazi skin heads. Ive met a lot of straight edge folks through the tattoo world. Funny story... I follow a guy on Instagram who happens to be straight edge. I didn't know this at the time. He was always posting pics of himself in front of strip joints. I remember thinking, "wow, this dude really loves strip clubs" until I realized it was the XXX from the strip club that he was really showcasing. The whole "edge is everywhere" bit. I laughed pretty hard cause for the longest time I thought he was just a bit of a perv. Not that there is anything wrong with that. As for myself, I am more of a wiggly edge dude.

    THE WALL stories...

I identify with this post today, haha. I think the most brutal session for me was when we lined my back, since we did the whole thing in one shot. I've discovered that my endorphins tend to fail on me at about four hours in, and everything after that is a test of will. Somehow, we wound up lining the worst spot on back last that day (up between the shoulder blades and just below the nape of the neck) and I was basically biting leather and hiding my face in my bunched up hoodie because I didn't want my tattooer to feel bad. Something about that spot made me burst into tears. Not like 'oh, this hurts, I'm so sad' -- almost like a nervous system response, like shock. Poor guy asked 'you sure you don't want me to stop?' and I'm like 'YES I'M SURE BLOOOOOO' because at that point the only thing in the entire world that sounded worse than what was happening was having to do it again later.

  26. The problem I see with this "tattoo style flow chart" is that it enables people to do all their research from the comfort of the home computer. A consultation tool? Whatever happened to walking INTO A TATTOO SHOP! Y'know, feeling like your going to shit your pants when the scary surly tattooer with a cig hanging out of his mouth comes to the counter to greet you with a smile, flash a gold tooth and says "what'll it be kid?". And you say in a shaky voice "uh um uh uh...i'd like a tattoo" and mr.tattooer says "relax kid and make yourself at home, we gots lots of flash on the walls, photo portfolios from our tattooers are on the table" and you say "uh thank you!" and then you sit back and flip through the books, get excited and see what type of fine work this shop is capable of. THAT is research. maybe I'm being a snob. yes, most probably. but part of getting the tattoo is that experience. and I'll never forget the first few times I walked into tattoo shops. some of them i looked around for 30secs and walked right out. some I stuck around for an hour and half and waited to be able to chat with a tattooer who's work struck me. it made getting a tattoo a real thing. so maybe you are thinking about your first tattoo. or second or third. or you're nearly filled up! whichever way I encourage people to get off tumblr and instagram (okay, stay here on LST though hehe) and go into that tattoo shop with the butterflies in your stomach to see what the tattooers within your reach are capable of. don't dissolve tattoos down to binary decision making -- make your tattoo an analog life experience. GO FOR IT! /endrant!
