My first freehand tattoo - a big ol freaky blackwork peony by Dani Liberal, guesting at speakeasy Chicago. I basically let him do whatever and I love it but am a little freaked by how big it is, haha.

Since I got my tattoos and dropped 35 lbs - and have been exercising a bit to tone up and keep my weight stable, I've been wearing a lot of sleeveless shirts and t-shirts. For work, I mostly wear short-sleeved shirts when the college is out of our normal semesters and I'm not wearing a suit. I'll even wear a tie with a short-sleeved shirt and sport coat. But, I don't normally go sleeveless at work. While I was out in Michigan at my sister's this week we were going through some old family pictures when I came across this one - my Dad in 1935. Apparently going sleeveless isn't new, it's retro, so I can now order some sleeveless dress shirts for work!!!

This makes me feel a little less alone. I really like my new tattoo (posted it here) but it was my first time letting a tattooer freehand it, which I wasn't expecting, and its size is kinda tripping me out. He did let me check it out beforehand, but it was hard for me to visualize how it would translate...and for all my other tattoos with stencils, I've never changed anything, just let the tattooers do their thing. My thinking is that it'll turn out better when they are given creative license, and I'm not an artist so I'm probably not going to have better ideas than they will. It's everything I asked him to do - Japanese style, blackwork, with whip shading, above the elbow - but every time I glance at my arm I'm like HOLY SHIT THAT'S A LOT OF INK. I also had a family emergency happen while I was getting tattooed - mom was blowing up the phone while I was under the needle - and I spent the evening crying on the couch afterwards. This all just happened yesterday, I'm hoping that when the negative feelings about life stuff blow over I'll get used to it :) it really is a beautiful piece of art, I love the little details and the linework and unique shading, etc. And three different tattooers in the shop came over to peek at the work and all of them commented that they love how it fills my arm. I hear people regret getting too small of tattoos more often than too big ones!

If you simplified a little and edited it some so the shape would be more long and narrow (the car in the picture you used is more horizontal and doesn't fit the thigh shape), the thigh could work. But if you insist on all that detail, nope. Really needs to be a backpiece if you want all that imagery to read clearly. Also: If there's any chance you'll regret this later, does it really matter where you get the tattoo? It's still on your body forever. If you're already having doubts before you even get the tattoo, maybe that's your gut saying it isn't right for you.

Your thigh isn't big enough, and it won't look right wrapping around. Back or chest.

a = not as long as the tattoo is huge. that's a lot of image, and for any detail at all - it's going to have to be massive. b = your complete back or torso c = you're friends sound homophobic. or redneck. last trick is going to find the right artist, otherwise you are going to end up wanting to hide it.

if you follow Jeff Rassier on IG, then you may have seen the four little fillers i got from him on Saturday. he drew them all directly on skin, so each one fits its spot perfectly.

Roses on my forearm the numbers where my soccer numbers that I had for all 14 years. Artist name in johnny at ASG ink in valpo IN wouldn't recommend him, he did good on this one but screwed my other up pretty bad.

Yea that would work too I have a pretty cool picture of someone who got it, I just love when Tupac throws west side up, gives me chills. I would prefer a full body but as addicted as I am to Tupac i would take just the name.

yea I would be fine simplifying it, just as long as Tupac looks like Tupac id be fine, I don't know if it's so much as regretting it more then maybe feeling dumb in 20 years to take my shirt off, I thought thigh so I could always hide it, even if I hated it I would only see it naked, and yeah that could be the case, the guy who I want to do it won't take appointments till 2018 so its 6 months till I can make an appointment so I still have a year or so till I could get it.

Thanks ? a few nights sleep and some time for family bullshit to blow over and I'm seeing that I was being silly...funny how we can transfer feelings about one thing to another. I do love it, just not used to being so freewheeling with my tattoos but I think it's good for me!

His portrait alone, without the car and background would fit nicely on your thigh - and wouldn't be such a commitment of space/money for an ideal that may not be as important to you 20 years from now.

It is going to move when you move. If you stand exactly the way you were standing when the stencil was put on, it will look exactly straight. This is going to change as you age and as your body changes shape in general. If it bothers you enough in the years to come, put some more organic shapes around it. Organic shapes are more forgiving on our bumpy, curvy, changeable bodies.

I like it. The good thing about choosing a dead celebrity for a portrait is that it's much harder for them to embarrass you later. For a panoramic piece like this I'd also say it'd be best on your chest or back. It'll be framed better and won't have to wrap like a thigh piece would. Your friends who called a thigh tattoo on a man "gay" are homophobes who don't get it. Let us know what you end up doing.

You can do just about anything with that tattoo and it'll be fine. Won't hamper your abilities at all and as long as you wash it after you're done, it should be fine. Your bigger concern should be how terribly tattoos age in that spot. Your socks and shoes will constantly be rubbing it, and within a year it'll probably be faded to almost nothing. Good application in that spot is difficult too, so if you get an inferior artist who doesn't do it properly, you're even more screwed. I would strongly suggest getting that almost anywhere else, even just moving it up higher on the ankle would help.

Yea iIknow it's going to be a huge tattoo, that's why I was thinking my whole thigh so I could show people and hide it. My friend told me to get it on my back. Yea I don't think he was meaning gay like actually being gay, more of that's gay dude like girls get tattoos there. Thanks for the response.

Got a good start on my arm piece this last weekend.

On Saturday, I have an appointment to finish my hare/dragon kite! Then I'll be down to only one unfinished piece on my body. I feel so unbalanced. Isn't funny how something so unimportant in the grand scheme of things can mess with your head?

I got a couple of little traditional flowers tonight. Got a few touch-ups, too. Started planning my forearm to finish out my right arm. Excited!

Went to New Jersey on May 19th to see Robert Ryan, and picked this Narasimha out of his sketch book. He changed it a little from the original to fit the upper arm better. Easily one of my favorite tattoos. The next Saturday, I played the walk in game at Smith Street and got two tattoos from Bert Krak, a butterfly, and a skull & crossbones. I came in wanting the butterfly, and he said he had time for another quick one if I was interested, so I picked the skull after he said it was a shop favorite. Everyone at both shops were great, and I had a great experience getting tattooed.

i'm not spending big bucks on big tattoos anymore...so i decided to venture down the unnecessary and slippery slope of stockpiling car parts so i can boost up my Evo. Today's impulse purchase...a custom Hanya Mask weighted shift knob...WTF!?!...perfect compliment to my Japanese race car haha thank you internet and I will see you in the mail in a few weeks my precious lol

picking this guy up on Sunday! He's a Havanese. Their litter was all named after volcanos, so he got the name Beerenberg. My wife didn't really dig it, so we're going with Milo He'll be our second dog, but our first puppy, so we got some learnin' to do!

So, I'm in Atlanta for a software conference and it let out earlier than I expected and I found myself with an afternoon with nothing to do. Browsed the interwebs for shops close by and didn't see anything promising. Just as I was about to give up and found one that looked good and ran over and got this done. I snagged this from Benny Haft over at Allied last week. I finally finished my torso after five years, done by Ian Dana Camp (formerly of Good Faith in Boston) currently at Adventure Tattoo in Nashville. He was all booked up in Boston before his move, but I luckily caught him doing a guest spot in Philly right after he moved.

Should my new tattoo be this brown/pink colour after 2 weeks when it is supposed to be black. the scab fell off on its own and i've treated it just as my tattoo artist said

I just got my first tattoo done 3 weeks ago. It's a memorial tattoo for my dad who passed back in August. It was done by Ashlie Layne at Cherry Street Ink in Macon, GA (@ashlietattoos on instagram). I am very happy with the shop, and love Ashlie. Her style is awesome - killer script work and detail. That's why I chose her - the zipper is a huge focal point for the tattoo and very important, and it is highly detailed, so I definitely wanted it to be done right.
