New here and starting major project!

Hi Friends! I'm new here. In November I'll be starting a full back piece. My artist is Travis Hulshizer at The Green Gazelle in Kansas City. We wrapped up my sleeve a couple years ago and finally am ready to start my next project. It'll be a full back piece centered around a turkey vulture with feminine imagery to balance it. I'm also a VERY anxious person and am already nervous about the pain. I was able to sit for 5-6 hour sessions for my sleeve but I hear the back is pretty rough. Also, for ladies, and tips on the best way to dress for comfort and easy access to my full back? Thanks!

I haven’t got any back pieces done but I have my shoulder. Why not try wearing a bikini top? Then that way there’s only two strings to contend with and they can be untied when he gets to the center. Your front would still be covered (you’d be lying on your stomach most likely, or maybe sitting in a chair leaning on the back?). Your sleeve is amazing, I love it.

Garver to continue on my arm and Rubendall to finally finish my leg! I had appointments in April for both then you know, the Corona. I am a little twitchy about flying to NYC for Garver, TBH. I plan to drive to LI for Mike.

    Latest tattoo lowdown.....

Got this guy from Scott Harrison last Sunday. Aside from the dope tattoo, I also got some great stories. If you're anywhere near the PNW, you should make your way to Portland and get work from this legend before he re-retires!

    Is this normal outline work

Some good news, found a artist who will take the work on, I will have to accept a compromise on the original work. But he is going to extend it as a half sleeve and hide a lot of the inconsistencies. Estimated around 6-8 hrs work. It will be two sessions, first one will be the 14th after a cancellation opened up a slot. I was offered a full cover up, but it would be a very dark piece which I don't really want. The original artist has now offered me a full refund, while it helps its still not a great situation.

I must admit the flakes of skin that are coming off are still coming off a little bit sticky with the Dermalize that didn’t come off. Thank you all for putting my mind at ease a bit! 🙂 Here’s my other tattoo on the other side 🙂

It's too early to tell. It isn't remotely healed yet. You need to just look after it, don't over moisturize it, and keep it clean. You can always get it touched up. Is this your first tattoo?

All parts of the back are not equal. I almost fell asleep while my artist was working on my upper back. When he hit the love handles though, that smarts!

Yes I'm from the US. Thank you for letting me know, I will report this to the local health department tomorrow morning, have already been in contact with the shop letting them know what the problem is. I've cleaned everything as thorough as possible back at my house. Trying to stay strong and have a positive mindset.

Holy potatoes Batman. That’s bloody terrible! I’d highly suggest you let the artist know also... who knows if it was picked up there or during the mending process. Either way, it’s good to inform them. I’m so sorry to that you’ve had such a rough time. I hope you heal up ASAP and you’re able to enjoy your tattoo, finally.

Hey there - you are using WAY TOO MUCH ointment. Clean your tattoo gently with antibacterial soap, pat GENTLY with a paper towel or let air dry then use a rice sized dab of ointment. You are smothering your tattoo! When did you get it? Is that your first tattoo? @Marciyah D

Just got back from my first session since the pandemic hit. Never had a chance to get a touch up and glad that I was finally able to! My artist, Joshua Ross, gave it another pass through (going over the outlines especially). Should settle in nicely once healed. Now on to the itching, my favorite part. And whatever anxieties I felt a few weeks back have subsided. I'm embarrassed to have freaked out over it, and I really am quite proud of the way it's come out. Btw, I was stoked to find out that my tattoo was featured in the official Queen fan club magazine this month. Anyway, thanks to everyone who took the time to read and respond in this topic. Cheers.

It still looks very wet. If you're putting anything on it not prescribed by your doctor then stop, for sure. Tattoos need air to heal.

Dude. Don't lie to him. It is AWFUL. It is badly done and amateurish. There isn't a straight line to be seen anywhere. All the damn shading in the world can't fix that horrible tattoo.

    Is this normal outline work

Thank you all for your comments, it just affirms what I thought. I have sent pictures and the original design to another artist that has a good reputation locally, and a fairly long waiting list, hopefully is a good sign. As much as it's disappointing I guess it's as much my own fault for not being more diligent. I have a day off tomorrow, I will see.if I can get a couple of consultations as well as what I have lined up already

Thanks for the love and tips everyone! I'm definitely anxious for the pain aspect but I'm sure I can do it 😳 I'll be most excited when it's finished. I'm not one who enjoys the process!

Ours does the same but he pees while doing it 🙃. He’s mental. Lol. We have a mini too, he’s 25 pounds and he’s adorable. Totally not tattoo related but here’s a pic of them.

What kind of style are these tattoos?

If I had to try and categorize those I'd say they are both versions of no outline neo-realism. Having said that, the description would probably only mean something to someone who actually does that style. If you are new to tattoos I might suggest spending some time searching for old threads here that cover the topic of no outline tattoos. There is a lot of "for" and "against" on the matter, but it would be good for you to be educated about the possibilities.

You "did" this tattoo three days ago? Who did it? You or an actual artist? Either way, a blowout is a blowout. Nothing you can do to "fix" it.

    New tattoo regret

Do a search. It’s very common to initially regret a new tattoo. Do you know what a swastika looks like? I’ve never seen one that looked like that. Don’t do anything without giving it a few months. I’ve seen a lot of disasters caused by people rushing out to “fix” something. It a nice tattoo, enjoy it.
  38. 3 points
Have some of this and calm down! Seriously though, your tattoo is a disaster waiting to happen. The more you monkey with it, the worse it will look. If everyone else thinks it looks great, just accept it an move on. You are FAR more likely to make it worse, than make it better.

    Tattoo Video Stills

Hey guys. In like 2016 a film student made a video of an old session of mine getting waves and leaves added to my turtle by Takashi Matsuba in his old studio. Thought I'd post some stills from the video here. The video's locked, but it's cool.

I've figured out what may have happened! Firstly thank you Hollie (LOL grumpy bums ahahaha) and Queen Rocks for being understanding unlike the others here who are so quick to jump to assumptions like "I didn't spend time researching the right artist" - my artist has a wonderful reputation or that "I didn't do a quick search" lol as if I would be here if there was a any information out there about tats that darken instead of lighten during healing, which there isn't. Someone on another forum where I posted the same question (without anyone who jumped straight to "wait and see and stop whining, you irresponsible anxious newbie" routine) mentioned that since I haven't been out in the sun at all but my arm looks browner said perhaps I was having a mild allergic reaction which led to the skin reddening. I've spoken to the artist and switched creams now to something less heavy than the one she initially recommended and that seems to have helped a lot! It's only been a few hours but my skin is less red/dark so will keep using the new light cream. Thanks again for your help girls! To the others: keep an open mind, everyone's bodies are different 🙂

I know you can't tell me anything until it's healed, but what can you tell me? I'm with you on the no anxiety after getting a tattoo. I read about it and understand it, but I've never felt it. Probably because I waited so long, researched it so thoroughly, and took my time finding the right artist.

Recently got my first tattoo in the US. Originally from New Zealand where I have three others. Super happy with the result, two sessions 15/16 hours total. Done at stained skin in Columbus Ohio. Excuse the swelling on the inside and outside of my bicep, that shits painful LOL.

Here's a small one I got yesterday. It's a snail warrior, a symbol of the band Heilung. They play music derived from pre-viking northern tribes. Very ancestral.

Every tattoo does not heal exactly the same way. Don't drown it, just a light coating of whatever you use. I just use cocoa butter, no need for that expensive stuff. Complete waste of money, IMHO.

    Tattoo newbie

Twin Peaks is a surrealistic visual adventure so having a tattoo that follows that theme is understood by me. That being said any surrealistic tattoo is going to get odd looks = and that's OK, as long as you don't mind answering the questions that will arise. That being said, you're going to need a very high quality artist to pull off the artwork needed to make sure your surrealistic image is readable (even to the initiated). Abstract floor patterns and especially curtains are going to have to not just look random or sloppy. Who is your artist?

My artist's shop reopened with one person at a time and only two artists working. Everyone wears masks, and they can only get in a couple of scheduled tattoos a day (no walk-ins). Got this yesterday. My artist and I both love John Prine.
