Mel Noir

These are all beautiful! I really love the way one of my friends, Ian Parkin, does lady heads. I think right now this is my favourite. I posted this up on the Inkslingers blog the other week, but more has been added to this, which I saw the other day. I just haven't had the chance to put up the current picture yet. If you check out the blog here you'll see loads more, I even have one of my own from him. Anyway...

Oh yeah of course man, I mean I agree with you, but it's like talking to a brick wall if you have a conversation with someone who's giving that excuse. To be honest, I don't think I know many good tattooers who would even take on an apprentice who's had the "practice" on their friends, over someone who hands in a portfolio of great drawings and paintings, so I don't get why they're bothering to use the excuse.

Just sit and talk shit all day. I've never had an itchy tattoo, so I'm going to put it down to that being why, as it's basically all I do.

Wow that sounds really cool, MsRad! You'll have to keep us filled in, I really want to see it when it's done! :)
Thanks about the new tattoo.. well, I say thanks, it's not like I did anything, lol. I always feel weird saying thanks when someone compliments my tattoos, it's like I'm saying thanks for someone else's work. But you know what I mean :) I love it. Didn't have a picture on my computer of my tattoo from Charlie, but thankfully everything's on the internet these days anyway. Hope this isn't too big...

That bear tattoo just makes me think, "Ms Rad by name, Ms Rad by nature", haha.
Here's a new one from me! This was done just yesterday, so my arm is pretty swollen. It's by Thomas Morgan, who is just finishing a guest spot in Inkslingers in Newcastle. I think he told me he'll be in Paris next, so if you live near there, I'd recommend getting some work from him!
Oh yeah, and I kind of thought this was obvious (I'm sure it will be to you guys), but since a couple of friends have asked me- the gypsy head isn't from yesterday- Ian Parkin did that, and it looks FAR better when my arm isn't at a funny angle :P

This is all pretty interesting, for some reason I didn't expect there to be such varied answers to it- glad there are though :)
For me, I think I could easily be with a guy who didn't have tattoos, as long as he was interested. If I couldn't have a good conversation about tattoos in any way, I probably wouldn't see the point. I already bore friends who aren't interested, haha. My best friend doesn't have a line on his body, but he still knows about tattoos and is really interested in them (just says he doesn't want them on his own skin- he'll change his mind, I reckon). If he wasn't interested in tattoos, I don't think we'd be best friends, because I'd bore him to death about work stuff or whatever magazine I'm shoving in his face at the time! When it comes to attractiveness, I don't think tattoos are that important, they're just a really great bonus, as long as they're good tattoos anyway.

Worst I know of is my ridiculously thick ex boyfriend. He actually had some really good linework on his arm for a sleeve until we broke up and he decided he didn't want to go back to my friend's studio (or pay him the money he owed him), but that's another story...
The idiot, of course, is stupid enough to own a tattoo "kit", and decided to get the word "HOPELESS" on his knuckles. Trouble is, he got mixed up when he was doing it and ended up with "LESS HOPE".
I really do know how to pick 'em.

Y'know, I couldn't agree more with this. I think if someone comes into a studio with the worst idea possible, and someone tattoos it anyway, without at the very least trying to make it better or showing them how it should be done, then I don't think I'd think that highly of the tattooer. Those around my area who would do that are the ones that need the money. I'm not saying Shannon is like this, by the way, just speaking generally.

I'm kidding, I think it's really lovely. When I get married, my husband is going to get a huge backpiece of my face, with the words "Mel Noir is a god to you cretins"... okay, no one would really agree to that.

Actually, every time I meet someone famous in Newcastle, I bring them a bottle of brown. My Chemical Romance and Alkaline Trio are now big fans, haha.

Just heard someone I didn't even know I had added on Facebook say my new tattoo is "so slick", before asking, "how much for a cool tat lyk dis?". Needless to say the comment and person's profile aren't on my Facebook page anymore. Argh.

Hey Peter- I think the best thing you could do is to visit a good studio and let the know what you want- they can do the rest. A lot of people think they have to come up with how the tattoo will look, and that's not really true, so don't worry about not knowing how to create anything! They'll know what works, and what looks good.
As for artists in Jersey (NJ, right?), I think everyone else will have a better grasp for who's the best for this, since a lot of people live closer. I like Scott Terry's work, though.
