My back is in progress and last session I realized that getting one's back tattooed is like getting your ribs done all over again. I foolishly thought going into it... "At least my ribs are done. Nothing could hurt that bad." If I'd given it an ounce more thought and considered the anatomy involved I might have realized that ribs wrap from front to back... fucking duh! I told Scott we will be finishing this thing in 30 minute increments. What a cry baby I've become in my old age.

Gia Dobson got a reaction from Gloomy Inks in Would you let your kid get tattooed before 18?
So, I know the PC answer here is that our children must wait until they are 18 like everyone else, BUT... I know of 2 instances where someone let their kid get tattooed before 18 and I sort of don't have a problem with it (for them).
Seems hypocritical since I made my son wait until his 18th birthday and threatened him that if he got a tattoo from anyone but my husband he would NEVER get tattooed at our shop and also filled his head with all types of cleanliness, health and safety issue horrors, all in an effort to keep him from going elsewhere or letting some sketchy sketcher fuck him up before he turned 18. In our case it worked. He waited and got a really nice tattoo for his birthday. But... SEVERAL of his friends have gotten tattooed before age 18 in street shops, just walkin in. WTF?
Anyhow, the first person I heard of was a guest tattooer at our friends' shop in Denver. His daughter had been begging for a tattoo since she was about 8 years old. He kept putting her off and making her wait, thinking she would grow out of it and change her mind. She didn't and by 12 years old was talking about it non-stop. So then he set up a series of goals and expectations for school work and chores and behavior, and told her if she did it all she could get a (tiny) tattoo. He figured she would never be able to comply with the entire list. She did everything he asked her to do. So, then he was kind of stuck and had to honor his word so he gave her a tiny dime sized star on her shoulder. (Her name is Estrella.) That parlayed into 3 more stars, one for each family member so she now has 4 little stars. I still think 12 is too young, but after hearing the entire explanation from this guy it somehow started to sound ok in this instance.
The second is an acquaintance of mine who's let her son who is 15 get a few tattoos. (I think he has 4 or 5 now.) He's grown up in a tattoo shop and will most likely tattoo for a living. I think he is already learning. And there are other circumstances that I won't mention here, but if you knew this family, Im telling you it just wouldn't seem that weird for mom to allow this. In my mind 15 is different than 12, but both are not 18 at the end of the day.
I think my final stand is that it's not ok for my family but I can see how it might be ok for others. Mind you these are parents (or friends of the parents) tattooing their own kids in their own shops. Im not in any way suggesting that one should ever tattoo a minor that you didn't personally know, even if the parents were there. I know my husband would never do it, under any circumstance.
So the question of this thread is... is it ever ok?

So, we collected 214 coats this week. Our goal was 100, so doubling that was way super awesome. The shelter was very very grateful to receive them and said that no one had donated to them yet this season. Not bad for a town with a population of around 15,000.
Here's a couple photos of us counting and sorting:

This was SO SIMPLE to do and so rewarding.

Gia Dobson got a reaction from Julio Avila in What's your longest tattoo session?
I must agree wholeheartedly. The longest I've sat was 4 hours for the backs of my arms by Juan Puente. That was about 10 years ago. I've slowly gotten less and less tolerant over the years, but also, the majority of tattoos I've gotten are done in 3 hours or less. Now Scott Sylvia is working on my back and I keep teasing him that we are going to finish it 15 mins at a time. Truthfully I can only hang for about 2, maybe 2.5 hours tops these days. I used to love getting tattooed, now I fucking hate getting tattooed, but I still love having them so I suck it up.

One story that came to mind today was one of Scott's birthday parties... his 30th maybe? Anyway, he rented a rollerskating rink and, as many people know, his birthday is 11/1 so he often celebrates on Halloween. So it was a costumed rollerskating party and holy shit it was awesome. First of all, the 222 boys rented a van to get there since many of us didn't have cars and I think also wanted to drink, so the van pulls up out front and Lolly and I are standing there watching everyone pile out like a clown car from the circus. This chick gets out of the van and we are like "whoa! what is her costume? prostitute?" but also were noting that she had great legs and then OMFG it was Hector Fong (shop guy at the time) in drag! We seriously thought he was a girl. So the costumes were AMAZING and if only I knew where the damn photos were I'd be a super star. Scott dressed like Mr. T and seriously looked exactly like him. He shaved his head like Mr. T, wore flesh colored sleeves, painted his face and wore the full overalls/ gold chains get up. Phenomenal! Juan was dressed in a giant man-sized Picachu costume and could not roller skate to save his life, so he was this giant yellow Pokemon constantly falling down and then mostly just holding onto the side of the rink or staying on the carpet. Other favs were Freddie Corbin and Lisa dressed as Jim and Tammy-Faye Baker and Jason McAfee dressed as Olive Oil from Popeye. Now if I only knew where those pics were.... dang it!

I have matching tattoos down the backs of my arms for my sons. They are a dagger through a rose with a banner... and one says "Indiana" and the other says "Hunter" done by Juan Puente at 222... sometime in the late '90s.
Here is the recent one for my baby girl who is a year and a half now... She totally looked like a kewpie when she was born... Artist is Josh Ford (Honorable Irons) at Lifetime Tattoo in Denver, CO

I also hate my tattoos being referred to as "work" ie: "nice work!" "I like your work." or "Where did you get your work done?" Less annoying but still bad is "ink". "Nice ink", "Where'd you get your ink?". I don't know why, those just bug. Calling a tattoo machine a "gun" = very annoying. I guess I do judge people by the lingo they use. I'm a jerk that way.

I'm going to say "ditto" to what Ursula said above and will add that I have gotten tattooed over stretch marks (from pregnancy) and it came out great... However I would double emphasize getting the tattoo from an experienced artist... Not only is it challenging because of the marks, but also it is a pain in the ass for the artist because that skin is more stretched (or stretchy) than skin that hasn't been slowly stretched to accommodate growing an 8 pound human being over a 40 week period... so it moves or "gives" a lot more and is just harder to tattoo on. It also depends on how big, deep and discolored the marks are. I would guess that marks from a growth spurt like you can sometimes get on the thigh or hip and easier to work on than the kind of loose skin and marks you see with people who lose a major amount of weight. An experienced artist will be able to tell you honestly what result is reasonable to expect. (Mine are the pregnancy kind and not too severe.) Im super happy to have the tattoo there because when I look in the mirror that is all I see.
