  5. Experimenting with decoupage-cold-press paper/liquid acrylic on stained pine with lacquer. Had some issues with things sticking, but not a total wash.
  6. I've been lurking and getting the lowdown for my trip to SF first week of July. I talked with Mr. Cleen at the Star of Texas Convention and hopefully I'll be getting something from him while I'm there. Thanks for the all the info!
  7. When I think of a subject as an artist (not tattooer), I choice stuff based on medium-I like pen, ink, and paper for detailed stuff, canvas and tube paint for bigger expressive things. The body is medium and it has it's own characteristics, one of which being aging, shifting, stretching, and wrinkling. I think according to the way most people age, crowded stuff will "blowout" and merge with time and you'll get a saggy watercolor effect. People are obviously free to get as detailed as they want, but I'm talking long run stuff here. Maybe the improvements in ink and machines will change it, but I think it remains to be seen.
  8. Those leg tattoos are awesome-perfect spacing and I can almost make out everything in the thumbnail. I've seen the "force field" stuff in old flash, but very rarely in old photos of tattooed people (lots of stars and dots for filler though)
  9. My experience has been that the tattoos I have that have the most visual impact are the ones with good amount of skin around them. When I first started getting tattooed about 4 years ago, I was on a mission for coverage. The more time goes by (and the more near-sighted I become ), I realize how hard it is to make out anything in full sleeve pieces with filler unless you're up pretty close. Does anyone else feel it's important to have negative space/skin between your tattoos?
  10. Shawn-thanks for doing all the hardwork on converting those for the nets. Very cool stuff :)
  11. He's a super nice guy. I got my part solely because of my tattoos = ) I started acting when I was 8, went to college for it, did professional theater, etc and it kept me from getting tattoos. I decided after I started losing my hair that the roles I'd get would probably be character stuff anyway, so I said the hell with it. Somebody who's getting alot of roles lately and has alot of tattoos is Tom Hardy The biggest thing I notice is almost a total lack of color in celebrity tattoos.
  12. I have often wondered why celebrities get such bad tattoos with seemingly unlimited resources. I think it goes back to educating yourself about what's out there, like anyone else. There's probably a lot of really good tattoos out there that never get seen, too. I was in "Machete" and Danny Trejo has a really nice black and gray Virgin Mary over his kids(?) playing the beach on his back. The general public probably won't see it because it's not a 'character' tattoo though.
  13. Dan, before I came into your shop, I spent lot's of time online going through the Myspace page gallery (the site was down for a bit) and communicating with Kevin Poon through FB to get a Sailor Jerry ship. I picked him because I like peppery whips, his traditional looked solid, and the tattoo came out excellent. But that wasn't some crazy custom piece-it was tried and true flash. Bart, I actually sat next to a girl who was getting about to get tattooed by you in July at NYAdorned. She wanted a cardinal and you broke out several different types on her right there. I was really impressed by that level of research on your part. As a customer, I feel like the responsibility lies on my part to do the research if I want something 'just so'. But I wouldn't ask Jack Rudy for a new school color bomb, either = )
  14. My son has been bugging me since he turned 16 to get tattooed. Nothing from my personal experience- me waiting til I was 30/had money to start getting tattooed, a family friend that went through a painful laser removal on a teenaged tribal arm band, discussions with tattooers at conventions have turned him off. I am honestly less concerned with him getting tattooed and more concerned with the quality of the tattooer he uses at this point. I think education is more important at this point = /
  15. I'm a tattoo collector, blogger, and graphic designer from Austin,TX. I have tattoos from Ezra Haidet at Triple Crown in Austin, Steve Boltz, Kevin Poon @ Scorpion Studios Houston, and AP Shrewsbury. I plan on adding more to my "travel" leg as time and money permits :D Thanks for having me and cool forum.
  16. I thought the same thing about my trip to SF this summer and getting tattooed by Cris Cleen, so emailed him and spoke with him at the Star of Texas Tattoo Convention. His wait list wasn't months out, but it might be different for other artists; I heard Grime has a crazy wait list.
