  1. hey wedge... what you choose for additional subject matter is your call... however, because your existing tattoo has a crest kind of feel to it, might i suggest that you use shaded filigree in the background that could flow with your arm? just a thought....

  2. I have to say no matter the industry you are in that is very weird...sit ins? A "sit in" sounds similar to "can I copy off of you?" as we all know from our days back in school. As far as I can see he does not convey a sound appearance, with all of the multi-posts, heavy slang, etc; just seems off...

Also is there any chance you can post up a screenshot of one of his tattoos?

i downloaded the one that i thought was the best one of his works. i just dont know how to get it on here. it looks like this site only takes images that exist elsewhere on the net. i can send it to someone to post for me?

  3. I read it. This guy sounds like he's full of shit. It was pretty funny as well. Heres the link

    Facebook

Hope you don't mind Chris. I had trouble finding your Facebook page as there are some old ones.

yep i suck at posts and facebook maintenance! sorry folks.. i appreciate the help and just wantedto share my disbelief! :)

  4. i dont know how to post pics from facebook to here. i do feel compelled to share my morning story though.

on facebook this guy i used to know when i was just a kid comments on one of my photos.. he asks to sit in on tattoo session so that he can compare what im doing to his own tattoo ability. hehehe ... ya ... right.

seriously.. you have to read the comments made back and forth from him and i!!!

find me on facebook ( chris moniz ) go to my photos, click on "todays tattoo work" look for a picture of a tiger that has only been outlined.. then view the comments!

its worth your while i swear! the guy hit upon almost every excuse for his shortcomings as a tattooer!

  5. i come in and out of here when i can :)

right now i cant get to sleep!

i live and work just outside of toronto in markham. i have my own little shop where i tattoo and my wife makes teas. its not a street shop, its not on the main drag, there is no flash on the walls to choose from, i only work by hour and never give quotes, my shop walls are not blood red, there is no front counter with staff stuck on a computer and i rarely take walk-ins. i do things my own way by taking out what i or my clients have found stressful in past tattoo experiences and created a tattoo environment that is much more relaxed! at least i think so ;)

i have a beautiful daughter that turns 5 in a couple of months. she sharpens pencils for 5 dollars and hands out business cards whenever shes in the store.

ive had this shop for 2 years, tattooing for 17... my family and i love camping. 2 weeks away from the city, just us, reminds us of what is real and what really matters in life. family is the most important thing. family made me a better man. :)

  6. I admit I watched Miami and LA Ink pretty regulary because I wanted to see the finished tattoos that were done. It became increasingly difficult to sit through the drama, though, just to see a finished tattoo. I especially liked the work of Hendricks and Garver and then Cory Miller, Dan Smith and Hurtado.

What I don't understand is what Ami James has to do with NY Ink? For me, that's an immediate turn off.

    ami is from new york

  7. Just saw this:

the world really would go to crap if we could all copyright what we put on other human beings. that would be like ownership of part of another human! was or wasn't mr. tyson asked if HIS tattoo can be replicated for the film? i dont feel that the tattooer should be able to claim a right to the tattoo. if such was the case, walt disney would be able to put a lot of tattoers into bankruptcy!

  8. Hmmm. Well, less is more. I much rather would want to see a portfolio where there is like 20 tattoos with maybe even a brief description about what they really want to do. I mean, why not? If there is a eagle and the artist wants to do eagles that are more like flash from the 1930, as the one he maybe has in his portfolio, and not so much from the 1970's, then write it there. I dont know if artists do this, but there are no rules. Put photographs in your portfolio of stuff you are drawn to. Fucking poems or shit.

And what RockelMan said is a great advice. Its boring to see 300 pics of tattoo work and have no sense of reason in them

i totally agree.. your portfolio can be more than just a tattoo portfolio.. there are no rules.. why not have an art portfolio out there instead? clean lines clear work win clients over but that doesnt have to be your entire book.

if you are at a loss of direction with art, here's the best advice i ever recieved... keep everything you do in art. to find out where you are going, compare where you are to what you did 3 years ago. evaluating your progression can help your direction.

  9. at 21 i was in art school working my way towards being an animation student. i figured if i couldnt make it in animation, id make it in comic books. i had no interest in tattoos whatsoever. myself and a friend were driving around bored, he suggested getting tattoos. i went along and got one. while hanging around the shop my friend told me i could probably tattoo better than the guy doing ours! so i asked the tattooer how i could learn. after seeing my art he took me on as his student. so ya.. right place and time? couldnt get an apprenticeship that easy these days! so tattooing just fell on my lap. i went into tattoos both feet in.. i still think of maybe getting something published in a comic book magazine one day.

  10. i got a client who is just a naturally clammy dude... every tattoo hes got, doesnt matter who did it, is raised! on really humid and hot days my left wrist gets raised and really itchy in small areas. its all a part of getting tattooed. pigment is not supposed to be trapped in your skin. so there has to be a certain level of acceptability.

  11. to the hyena... i must say your post was just so perfectly written. wow i loved it dude!

i just would like to add...

there is a legitimate reason why shops despise those who decide to learn on thier own. aside from putting the local population in a health risk due to lack of knowledge in bloodborne pathogens and cross-contimination, there is also the fact that government and health departments across the board all pool-in tattoo shops with people tattooing from thier homes. they see no difference between the professional and those experimenting on thier own. laws are then created as well as uninformed rules on professionals to follow due to public scares created by people tattooing in thier homes.(ie. health dept thought rubbing alchohol was an effective way to wipe a tattoo machine... duh). learning from home will give you a reputation in your area which could leave a black mark on you should you persue tattooing as a career.

  12. numbing creams.. many tattooers dont mind tattooing an area thats had the cream applied. personally, im not a fan of tattooing an area of skin that has been numbed with cream. an example of a numbing cream would be a product such as EMLA. i find that the treated area of skin seems to have changed when it has numbing cream on it. it seems more 'spongy' and feels off. i find it difficult to get a good saturation of ink in that area and find that linework doesnt appear as clean. perhaps my issues are due to lack of experience with the product? i dunno... feedback from clients tell me that the area does get a little numb and that the cream does take the edge off pain. traditional die-hards might argue that the pain is part of the whole process... the right of passage so to say...

its my own preference as a tattooer not to work with numbing creams. i feel it hinders more than helps when it comes to my job of getting the artwork in.

  13. wow! i just registered for this forum and this thread is my first read and overall impression of the place. this thread really caught my eye and i thought it was amazing just how in-depth it became and also how incredibly well hostility was handled. i dont really have anything to contribute to this thread in particular because it was already so well done before i got here! i did want to share just how impressed i already am with the forum and the people involved. Thanks for having me here folks.
