I went about every 4-6 weeks for 3 1/2 years and finished two sleeves and a back piece. I'm taking some time off. I finished up in September, but am starting to get the itch again. My artist has a three month wait so I'll probably start up again in June. I'm looking at getting tigers on my ribs. OUCH!

I've been gone for a while. I'm stoked to see so many great tattoos being done.
Started my back with Horitomo in December.

I think my nips are pretty damn sexy so I am going to leave them be.

Here's my progress so far by Diego Azaldegui. Got another session in a few weeks which should hopefully finish it off.

After 14 sessions spanning 15 months, I'm thrilled to say that my back piece--courtesy of Jay Cavna--is finished. It's a rooster/boar/snake battle royale with peonies. We just wrapped it up a few hours ago. I couldn't be happier with it and am blown away by Jay's skill and commitment to his work.
    Here's the pic.

I'm pretty far into it. One more session and everything above the belt is finished, leaving just the color on my butt/legs.

This is after my most recent back piece session with Jay Cavna. Next appointment in two weeks. More color!

I think part of the appeal of a back piece is the required patience, discipline, and sacrifice.

I'm with @Cork in that balance was a huge consideration. Started with a half sleeve which then was made into a 3/4 sleeve on my left arm. In my mind, had to 3/4 sleeve my right arm as well and from there went below the waist to my left thigh, then began a shoulder to back of knees back piece. Eventually will get a piece on the right thigh to balance out the left. Hadn't planned on anything for my chest/stomach area and chatting with an artist about a calf sleeve but it's just a thought for the moment. My motif is Japanese, strictly animals/creatures and florals. As much as I love them, won't consider any gods or demons for superstitious reason in which I addressed in a separate thread on the forum. Placement was a big consideration for the subject matter.

I don't tattoo but I'm going to give my opinion on things that I know very little about because it's the Internet and I have a right to make my voice heard, damnit!

I personally really like Dana Helmuth's snakes. I'm glad I got him to add one to my back piece.

I have a friend who got "No Regets" or some variation on it, though I've only seen the pictures on Facebook. She got the intentional misspelling because it was supposed to be clever, because she's a writer, though I think she actually works in a coffee shop.

But if you want something that's going to stay perfect forever, get a print or a painting, not a tattoo.

I think Hipsters are the ones getting all the lettering and seem to require all their tattoos to be meaninful and quirky.
I have a four word rule. My tattoos should have no more than four words ex Love Thy Neighbor, Sink or Swim, Heads I Win, Hardcore Roadwhore and you should be able to describe your tattoo in less than four words ex Panther, Rock of Ages, Kewpie, Rose, Skull and Dagger otherwise you put too much thought in to it.

Not another single visible tattoo, yet she gets her face inked, and inked in a way to guarantee her trouble in about any city.
    Oh yeah.
I'm sorry if it makes me old, or lame, or judgmental, but the tattooer that dreamed this up should be shot.
