Kinda excited to see this thread :) Seeing as its fight night tonight at class.

Started training in 2001 in Shotokan, "cross trained" in a few other styles when I went through the fire acadamy and emt school. Now finally back after a rocky 4 years to test for my dan. I'd love to get into some sort of mma, just for the hell of it eventually.

Not an artist, but "born again/baptist" christian. But yeah, I don't go to church and I don't thump bibles on peoples head (usually I just straight up punch or gibs slap people) Pretty sure most of my friends don't even know unless they grew up with me. I think the only time I really get into religious stuff is if some one specifically asks. Don't know many artists that I've heard of in my area being Christians.

I really loved the drawing but I am really actually loving the tattoo the more I read about what it all signifies!

Shishi is the Chinese version, Komainu is the Japanese version.. Okinawa even has their on version, first time I've heard of it called a Snow dog though :) Pretty wicked looking!

I was 18 when I got my first, managed to hide it from my mom for a week when we changed the sheets and I realized i had gotten blood on the sheet.. perfect print of the tattoo itself. My ex drove me down to some location in Philly.. Walked in and he pretty much said we weren't leaving till I picked something off the wall. Coney Island Joes was the name of the shop and Joe (or his son) had just gotten out of jail. Something to do with Hells Angels

Yeah. First and last time I went there, that tattoo still bothers me, swells up and gets irritated every once in a while. Crappy piece of tribal..

Finally got in to the shop, finishing my Banshee on May 10th, got put on a call list if there is a sooner opening. Wanna knock this one out so I can start plotting my back piece. We're thinking it may be done in two more sessions as we have to do the veil, her neck and neck lace. And then the back ground which is essentially my entire arm. I can't wait, its been to long..

I believe I spelled that correctly. So here is the deal, I figured I would ask some of you ...experts :)

Some of you know I'm going through medic school, well actually going to college for Paramedic. But here is the deal, I am in Anatomy and Physiology and we have been given an assignment to do a research paper about the life and death cycle of a cell. My topic is Apoptosis and how it relates to tattoo fading. I've found about three different web sites that give a small blurb on it and show little drawings of the process.

I want to know if there are any scientific brains in here that could elaborate more on this whole step/ process or if I do just have to b.s. my way through 5 paragraphs based on what seems to be repeated information.

I can and will if requested post the three links I found discussing it so you guys can get an better understanding of what I'm talking about

Dear lord how am I only seeing this thread now?? I could keep you guys entertained for hours with the stupid crap I've done, from Karate injuries, to rugby to a night spent in a cave to stupid little stuff at work. :p

I love my own artist, and I'm not well versed in the whose who in tattooing, but i know some of the big names that have been posted. I'd love to go to some of these guys who have been posted but so far Amber's the only person who can read my mind and know what kind of style I want to use and how to get it to fit with what I already have..

That sucks! Are you doing some laser first or is it small enough to cover with another tattoo just how it is? I hope it all works out ;) (if it helps I was really really lucky, I probably should have had some laser done first but thankfully it all worked out)

HA! No I've already been told by Amber(artist) that I will have to get some laser work done to it, considering it is the entire upper half of my back.. (see pic)

What do you do that you work with them? (working on a research paper for medic school and they're my topic.. "Things you need to know as an EMS provider when dealing with "insert culture here"" essentially the do's and don'ts of various cultures and I picked American Indians)

Heh, so far I think the only two close to that are half bloods.. It would be nice to get a full blood in here btw that Cry for the indians tattoo is absolutely amazing!

Seems to me (and this was kind of the original issue I wanted to pose) that it's actually the opposite and can be disrespectful because it's an outsider's two-second take on an entire culture that we just decided is "neat." Less a love of it, more a stereotyping of it. ..like Peter Pan. The lady head thing is kind of the worst offender, because it makes no sense -- but I still love those tattoos! I'm guessing it was never the point to be correct, just to draw a great design. And it certainly worked!

I'm glad there seems to be a generally positive response, especially what @Shmitty pointed out with the drawings at his station. And that PENDLETON PANTHER is pretty great! And Stitch, there are usually at least a few good books on the day-to-day of certain tribes from "back in the day" as well as their mythologies and adventure stories, which are awesome. Reading is an easy first step.

I see what your saying now, I guess it comes down to the context in which you get the tattoo and how the other person perceives it..

As for my own thing, I drew up some silly little one using the Iroquois flag I'll try to post it, as for all the books, Half my bookshelf is martial arts books, the rest is all books on Native Americans.. And I still can't find one for me to use as a base idea.

I'll post again later this weekend about my idea as a whole, if you guys don't mind see if I can get some feed back based off my other arm and what I want to do with my "native american arm"

I'm glad this thread poped up, I'm half Mohawk (Iroquois) And I've been trying to figure out how to represent this as a tattoo, I don't really consider my right arm in its current state to be an Indian tattoo like the others posted, but it does have it's subtle hints about my heritage. (the Raven skull for my raven totems).

I really like the Navajo tattoos that you guys posted, so vibrant. It defiantly hits the nail on the head about their culture. I think if anything it's almost a respect thing getting those if you aren't native American because it shows the love of the culture, and ways of the people.. And isn't the stereotypical Lady head.. (don't get me wrong their cool, but I'm not a real fan of the Indian ones.)

I always laugh when people ask if I charge by the color. Or when people say "i don't take red,or white" or so on. Sometimes I can't help but laugh out loud when they say shit like that! lol

I've had issues with red ink.. (itchy/ allergic to sulfa used in some inks..found out the hard way)

Some Jackass once told me if you have an odd number of tattoos on you it's extremely bad luck.

Funny, some assjack told me the opposite.

Then again my mom always said I walked around leaning to my left side because my right side didn't have any tattoos..

(she was also quite upset when I went ahead and corrected that issue by getting my right side tattooed)
