Ok, now I thought TLC were bad, but this takes the biscuit. These guys are offering to teach people to learn how to tattoo in a day, and just so you know they are quality, they have a 100% success rate !

This has to be illegal, I mean what can ANYONE learn in a day that makes it ok to tattoo?
We should start a secret society of anti tattoo school ninjas, operating on a global level, with the sole objective of making putting these type of operations out of business.

So I was in a local book-store yesterday looking through tattoo related publications, and I found a book titled "Ed Hardy Cross Stitch Patterns".
I know lots of people love Ed Hardy, and I respect his tattooing and his contribution to the industry, but come, does he and the guys who own the licence to his images want to make money out of everything.
It occurred to me, that when they are finished they will knock out a line of Ed Hardy toilet paper, just so they can wipe their ass on the industry one last time.
Sorry, I know you guys love the man, but I am sick of seeing the Ed Hardy EVERYWHERE.

Bubbleberry got a reaction from Aahzz in Tattooers with little to no tattoos
I guess there are unwritten rules in the industry, and for me, to many of them are about "respect". Lots of artists who have been working in the industry for 20 + years are covered in tattoos, but I would not let them near me with a needle, even though they are well respected. Some of the newcomers who put out amazing work have little tattoos, but receive little respect from the industry because of how long they have been around. The average customer does not hang around forums like this, they come in off the street looking for something "nice" from the flash. I do not think they care how long the artist has been around, how tattooed they are, who sponsored them etc. For them its about the "experience" .My wife is about to start her apprenticeship, and has only 1 tattoo. She wants more, but is cautious by nature, so when she knows what she wants, and who by, she will undoubtedly get more. But the artist she will be working under was happy that she had only 1 tattoo, so that she knew what it felt like. He was more interested in her artistic ability, which again, is what the average Joe is concerned about.
So for me the answer is that I care more about the tattoo they are putting on me than the tattoos they have.

Ok that made my day lol.
I personally HATE the term "tramp stamp"...especially when it is used by tattoo artists. They forget that the lower back started out as a favourite place for guys before girls adopted it....not saying guys cannot be tramps before someone jumps on me lol

While watching the excellent Freedy Corbin tattoo in blog, my ears perked up when he started talking about his tattooed nun from Don Ed Hardy. I really like this design concept. My first exposure to it was in old Japanese woodcut prints of tattooed samurai from the Shinpen Suikogaiden

I've seen Westernized versions ranging from the Greg Irons Edith Burchett tattoo:

to cholo updates like this banger from Nico Acosta at Better Days in Santiago Chile:

and this awesome Red Hot from Eric Gregory at Little Vinnie's Tattoos in Baltimore, MD:

    Anybody else dig this?

Wow, its strange to read this post, having been absent from the forum. As someone who has been sober for a while, regularly attending AA and NA meetings etc. I have seen this deadly destruction, and walked behind the coffins far to often. For the past few weeks we had an active alcoholic stay with us. He was homeless and coming to meetings twice a day trying to get sober. He has a history of alcoholic seizures so we got him into the local hospital to detox, and he stayed with us for a while until he got into a rehab program. Its a deadly disease, and Amy's death carries a strong message. I just wish the world would pay more attention to the nameless thousands who die with nothing.

Of course it seems fishy - if there was not something wrong she would be there and there would be no problem. I guess we knew from the start there was a problem, but thought that it may be ok, or he would not be telling her to tattoo people, right?
    Wrong !
Brian, I would be interested in what your thoughts are? I spoke to another artist today, in another well known studio, who stated that it was not how they apprentice people, but, like you indicated, she would have to tough up, get used to making mistakes, and learn how to fix them.
I think if it had been fixed she would have been OK with it. As Kore Flatmo said in his interview - " I can beat my niece in arm wrestling - it does not mean I am strong - you have to compare yourself with the best, not the worst."
So what would those who consider themselves good tattooists have done ?

It seems we all have different experiences of tattoos, different reasons why, and different emotional connections too. What's your story?
I first started seeing tattoos as a child, I grew up in Belfast in the middle of the war, and all the kids in school were getting tattoos supporting various terrorist organisations. There were a lot of skin heads in the city back then, and they usually had Nazi tattoos or tattoos relating to other terrorist organisations so tattoos were probably looked down on there more than in any other culture at the time.
I had some family friends, older guys who were in the merchant navy that had old school tattoos, collected on their journeys. They seemed mysterious and wise, and I wanted to be just like them.
When I was about 13 my cousins took me to a local bar where all the bikers and punks hung out. That was my first experience with booze and marijuana, and I was amazed at all of the tattoos on display. It was the first time I experienced a large group of people who were tattooed, and who were "cool".
The fighting was pretty bad at this stage,. Belfast had no night clubs, just a few safe bars, and only 1 tattoo artist. There were no concerts, no festivals or conventions and it was not unusual to have 10 or 20 bomb explosions in the one day.
You either got tattooed by school friends using Indian ink and needles, or you went to a guy called skull, who scared the life out of all of us.When I finally got the courage to go, in front of me was an american soldier who was HUGE. He fainted and slipped of the chair when the needle touched his skin, and I was up next, nervous and shaking.
I walked out of skulls with the same eagle tattoo that Richard Gere sported in An Officer and a Gentleman, and I felt like the coolest guy in town. I do not remember feeling prouder, as I strolled through Belfast city centre, my shirt rolled up and my tattoo on display. I was 16 and I felt like the king of the world.
10 years later I got that eagle covered with tribal, and its the biggest regret I have. I am having the tribal removed, and hopefully, somewhere below we will find the remains of the eagle, which I hope, will fly again.

That's rad Bill, R.I.P. Sonny. I got mine from my buddy Adam Paterson who broke me into the business. I had just read Tattootime "Tattoo Magic" and thought it was so awesome, I had to add it to my magic. Got it across the top of my right hand, just below my wrist. Noticed recently that Stell has it in almost the exact same spot.
I feel the same way, being nice is such an under-appreciated virtue in this business, I can't believe that in this day and age, in a service job, there's still so much bad-attitude pseudo tough-guy posturing going on. It's honestly why I don't have many tattooer friends. Some people just dont understand that you don't have to be a dick to be cool I guess. I mean look at Paul Rogers, of all the things he is remembered for the foremost two are, he was a exceedingly kind, and an incredibly hard worker. That's the kind of legacy I want to leave. A jerk who can tattoo is still a jerk.

What I found helps is first finding someone really great you can be tattooed by- then you'll probably realise why you like them, by thinking, "yeah, that guy does a great snake", or "she does a wonderful dagger"- then you could ask them to do something like that, while filling in the space.
Worked for me anyway, just today! :)

I understand you weren't trying to be an asshole, I was just responding as a spokesman for the generally misinformed masses. No matter what you are a master of now you were once naive and ill-educated in the beginning; something I feel everyone forgets from time to time. This I feel is universally human in nature.
As to my current and future tattoos, they are already making me feel more comfortable in my own skin for the first time. Weird as it may sound to some but I would be more at ease looking at a skull and demons on my skin then the bare skin itself.

This video features Cliff tattooing in New York & Florida. And generally not wearing pants.
There was no audio originally, so I decided to leave it silent for now. Enjoy-

Yep, the tattoo is on my leg. And new week there will be another one... he does not mind her tattooing me, saying that fake skin is crap. I gotta be honest, I really had a hard time choosing what I wanted as I needed something easy for her but that I liked. I guess I wanted my arms finished and had forgot about the legs.
It hurt bad in places, especially round the shin as has he kept telling her to push the needle in deeper and deeper..she was holding back trying not to hurt me, he kept telling her to be firmer, I kept squirming in my seat... And off we go again...
Poor girl was a nervous wreck at the end of it and I was GRUMPY !
He is a friend so he wants to see her do well, but he also does not want anyone else being harmed as she learns. He will not let her get a machine, or any other equipment, he made her promise that she only tattoos under his guidance etc etc.
As for the $50.00, as soon as he says she is allowed one it will be our first purchase. I am not sure who is more excited about her carrer path, me or her.

    Hey Mask0311,
First off, I would love to see everybody sportin great tattoos wherever I go but unfortunately there are fewer people out there "keepin it real" and if I go to WalMart I can see a store full of bad tattoos these days.
As far as this guy "blowin you off", it's an old game, as old as it gets with "runnin' the scam", some will spot you and size you up to start something at a high price that they never intend to finish when they have a string of butterflies they can knock out and make more on when you may have already paid in advance, basically you will get shuffled to the rear like you got treated at the 9pm bell. NYC went crazy with those scams when it opened tattooing back up and on this subject I could go on and on.
As far as the tooth hurting thing, RUN!!! should have been your instinct and this leads me to tell you that there are tattooers out there who relish a challenge of turning bad tattoos into good ones, so don't worry about having someone else drive over the mess you have started.
As far as your expecting better treatment/respect for being home from the military, your absolutely right, the military has always been our staple in tattooing and when everybody's home and the wars are all over we will miss that amount of biz and it goes from steak to pork chops for us tattooers and this is not to mention that there are those of us out here that understand your service to Uncle Sam.
So, as far as "keeping it real" and to prove that not all of us are like this disgrace to our trade I will fix and finish your dragon at no charge with the stipulation that you provide the steaks that I will personally grill for you at my country home where I have a rifle range that I will provide 500 rounds of ammunition for you to shoot through my legally owned and registered machineguns after we are finished with the tattooing, on this deal you have my word. Your only hitch is to make it by land sea or air to Illinois and provide the bovine. It can be fixed and finished and picture posted to this thread should you come through on your end of this bargain and I mean all of this most sincerely.
I can't do this for every person that's received your treatment or I would work myself into the poorhouse but this is my offer to you.
Thanks for your service and I apologize for the hack who misrepresented our trade and culture and I hope to hear from you.
    Sincerely,
    -Hawk- of
