  1. @hogg it was based on an image I brought in of a female ONI called "ibaraki doji." Although I agree "tomomorioni" would be a better name ;) @CultExciter I preferred everything about tebori except for how long it takes. I loved the quietness and sometimes there was no pain--I heard the JIK JIK JIK but the only thing I felt was the hand stretching the skin. I nearly fell asleep once.
  2. It might have come to symbolize Viet Cong, but "coolie" is a racist slur that originates in the 19th century, when chinese immigrants were brought over to the U.S. and built the transcontinental railroad during the Californian Gold Rush. It's like (but not the same as, I know) getting a picture of an African slave's head with a dagger through it, which I think most people would agree is beyond the pale.
  3. Sorry to kind of derail this conversation, but I've been wondering... why is it cool to get the "coolie" with the knife through his head? It seems like a much more violent and overtly racist, but nevertheless very popular american traditional tattoo image.
  4. My first tebori by Horitoshi 1--just finished and still a bit bloody
  5. Horitoshi 1 (foto from his instagram accnt) lines and shading done now. Color next week! (Please delete if it's weird to post in progress work here)
  6. Knee tattoos. Sort of want one/sort of think my knees already hurt enough and are off limits...
  7. @Cork Ha I'll definitely let you know! Just the chest for now.
  8. I just had my first tebori session (shading in the hair). I found it hurt less than electric tattooing and it was nice to not hear the buzzing of the tattoo machine. Pleasantly surprised!
  9. Had my first session today (lines with machine) with Horitoshi I. Excited for shading and color by hand...
  10. I found out I have the same t-shirt as Paul Rogers.
  11. I wrote as much in the upcoming tattoos thread, but thought it'd make sense to report that I had a consultation yesterday with Horitoshi 1 here. Stoked to get work from a master!
  12. Well, Horitoshi sensei was not obstinate or scary. Super friendly and kind. I may have signed up to get rib dragons in addition to a chest ONI (*_*). ONI will start mid July.
  13. @sighthound I've been emailing him about a ONI face on my chest but I also really want a dragon from him (I think his are the best)... We'll see how it goes.
  14. I'm going to Ikebukuro tomorrow for a consultation with Horitoshi 1. Excited and a bit nervous. I keep on imagining (hopefully) paranoid scenarios where he explodes saying something like, "You want me to tattoo what!? How dare you!"
  15. I hate those things! They remind me that those people were cool because they didn't need tattoos to be cool and that I might be barking up the wrong tree with my obsession. Ha! The thing about ideology/fashion is you can't see it for what it is when you're in it. Look at any photo of yrself from more than a decade ago. You look silly but at the time you thought you looked great. At the same time that's what's great about tattoos--you're committing yourself to something for life when it's obvious that nothing is "timeless"--it's inherently stupid and in bad taste.
  16. Looks like Horizakura has Elvis tattooed on his chest? That's amazing.
  17. Here's mine by Jeff Rassier. I also posted a fresh pic in the latest tattoos thread but here it is healed.
  18. Oh yeah! Thanks for the heads up man!
  19. An awesome thing @CABS did recently was offer me his Eli Quinters appointment at Temple because I couldn't get one with Freddy Corbin. I'm almost tearing as I write this. I was, and still am, moved by his kindness.
  20. I'm visiting SF from Tokyo with my family and met up with @CABS and @hogg for tacos n beers in the Mission. Good times! Rad dudes.
  21. Thanks. Yeah, when it was done, I immediately wanted to get more tattoos from him.
