First, no chemicals are going to lighten the tattoo. If such a thing existed there would be no laser industry. Second, if someone wanted to start working in on a tattoo that's a cover-up of a cover-up after only 4-6 weeks old I'd find someone else.
You say you're not in a hurry, but this coverup isn't even healed and you're looking at monkeying with it again and you are setting a one year time line for finishing your sleeve. Each time you get a tattoo, scar tissue forms as part of the healing process. This will be the FOURTH time you're working that skin.
You don't want to hear it, but that skin needs to really heal and it's going to take time to see how much the tattoo lightens up. If you just jump right into this you'll be back on here in a year asking how to fix the cover-up of the cover-up of the cover-up of the bad tattoo.

It’s awesome. What you’re feeling is pretty common for a first huge piece or first visible piece. I get it every time with hand and neck tattoos. You’ll adjust to the change in your appearance and start to love it, before almost forgetting you even have it. And it looks cool as shit

Right??! If this is the best she can do that is very concerning. My friend was able to cancel our appointments in time not to pay any penalty so PHEW. I’m officially in charge of selecting the artist.

Ya, most look alright, but many of the newer ones look wonky.  I don't think I'd be going to her either.  There's lots of artists that do better work than that.

Way too inconsistent. Also, keep in mind, most artists only post their BEST work.

+1, not phallic. I think it looks very close to the reference you provided. If I were you I'd give it some time and don't mess with it for a while

I don't think it looks anything like a dick, and I think it looks very pretty for that style. I don't know why you're unhappy with it. I think there's a like honeymoon phase sometimes with new tattoos, and maybe that's what you're experiencing?

I've been lurking since March. I found the LST forum when I was planning my back piece. The back piece experience thread and the ladies thread were instrumental in my prepping and planning - I especially appreciate the insights of GingerNinja! So thank you GN and everyone else on this forum!

My favorite style of tattooing is blackwork and I look forward to being completely covered someday. I'm starting with places that stay covered at the office and will move on from there!

I just finished my back piece Saturday and will probably move on to one of my legs by next winter.

If you want to do it, go for it. If you don't, don't. I am vexed by all of the negativity and hate being spewed. If someone is looking for a deeper connection to someone, this could be a way. Since I am not a tattooer, I don't know the details on how to mix and apply it. As a consumer, I'd want to ensure that it's safe. Other than that, I think the idea is pretty cool.

I'm going to be the odd woman out -

I love all my tattoos including the 11 year old song lyric tattoo that wraps around my right thigh and the 8 year old song lyric tattoo my right forearm.

I always feel the rightness of a new tattoo when I look at it and feel more myself now that I have it.

Having said that - if you are having such doubts and concerns that you feel the urge to solicit the opinions of Internet strangers, I'd hold off.

FWIW, studies show most people's musical tastes don't diverge after age 33 so you could always make it a bday present for your "Jesus year" if that hasn't passed for you yet.

'Break free' or 'I want to break free' from the Queen song.

I actually love this idea - I think I'll but the words on the backburner until I get an idea or the oppurtunity and need to fill a banner. This would really suit the other stuff I've got going on at the moment.

That a very good point. I'm hoping 'break free' or 'I want to break free' is timeless enough but I'm still in my early 20s so while I doubt I'll ever hate freddy mercury it is harder for the meaning to evolve than with an image.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions! I ended up getting the opportunity to get tattooed at a convention this weekend (big rose on the hip/bottom ribs) so I'm not getting tattooed for a while. Think I'm gonna wait until I want a design with a banner and fill it with these words.

You can see how the tattoo of the poem on my rib cage intersects with my back piece on the left side. I'm into it.
