Whoa...some seriously serious ways to care for a tattoo!
Okay...I've got tattoos that are around 30-35 years old, and still look pretty damn good, color is bright, lines are crisp, all like that. I'm looking at a cover-up on my left forearm that Dale Grande did in 1984, and it looks about good as new. The main color is a light purple, and we were both a bit worried that it might fade-out with time. Hasn't happened.
So here is the aftercare recommended at the time: Leave the bandage on overnight, then remove and shower. Use unscented lotion sparingly to keep the tattoo from drying out. Don't pick the scabs. Period.
Actually, at the time I got that cover-up, the hot ticket for tattoo healing was, believe it or not, Preparation H. Keeps the tat a little moist, and eliminates the swelling. When I got the outlining done for my sleeve, I flew to Mexico the next morning, way the hell up in the mountains, and my arm didn't appreciate the sudden change from -10F to 100F...swole up like a balloon. Hit the local Pharmacia, got some Preparation H, and within an hour all was well again.
I've never used any of the new stuff, got my last work done a year ago, and just used plain old Dial to shower with, and Bacitracyn to keep it from getting dry enoug to crack. Still seems to work.
So whatever works for you! Just remember, you don't have to re-invent the wheel every time you get ink done.
    (and make sure it's a 13 and not a 31)

not sure if anyone has said this yet but here's what i've learned from some people who know what's up. i've tried it so has my man and it WORKS. it's mostly for larger work
when you get home soak it in the hottest bath you can handle for a while
    re-wrap BEFORE it dries completely
    leave the bandage on overnight
in the morning wash it very well with soapy water, it might hurt a little but keep rubbing it untill all the gooey shit and blood and ink comes off
let it air dry and then care for it like you normally would with lotion or whatever you like.
i find when you do this the scabbing is much more minimal and the healing time is a lot quicker. the people who told us about this said it's how the japanese heal their large scale work

I had the best healing experience I've ever had with my last session so I figured it was worth sharing. It still looks just as good as my tattoos that healed using my previous regimen, but it only took like 4-5 days until the tattoo was completely flaked, healed, and looking like how most tattoos do weeks later. It also barely flaked at all- the lightest smoothest flaking possible. Thanks to Freddy Corbin for the tip... So rad.
    Leave the bandage/wrap on overnight.
Apply a hot compress to the fresh tattoo after you pull the bandage (transfers heat better than the shower)
Then take a hot shower to rinse everything off (cleans the surface better than a hot compress)
Aquaphor as needed over the next few days.

i sincerely think, keeping it clean and dry is the best way, for me.
i leave the wrap till either bedtime or the morning, depending on the area tattooed or the size of the tattoo.i wash mine with fairly hot water and soap for the first few days to stop it from weeping, the first wash is the most important and i will take a while to wash it. if towards the end of healing it feels a bit dry thats when i might use a pea sized amount of unscented moisturizer.
i get too many customers believing its the cream that heals the tattoo and look at me funny when i tell them, its not the cream doing the healing, its the skin, so take care of it and dont smother cream on hoping for a miracle.

@Caine22 Look up pictures of dragons done by good artists - Horiyoshi 3, Shige, Leu, Mick...many more...
Determine what you like and take examples to your tattooer. He should be able to help from there. If he or she needs more than that, chances are you have the wrong artist for the job. Just my opinion...color can be very subjective and can be limited to what has already been done to the piece. (You likely won't be getting very vibrant colors in areas already shaded dark) However, an artist with experience doing this style will likely have a few classic color schemes that would work.

Is it seriously your first pimple? Jesus. Keep your dirty fingers off of it and don't pop it. Else you just might get that infection after all.

I've been a tattooer for 4 years now and I've just started learning what it takes to call myself that. I have a lot to learn still. Thanks to those who work hard to provide this resource to folks like me.

    1. Upside-down tattoos (Tattoos that face the wearer rather than correctly facing the viewer) and the same arguments that come as a result of trying to persuade them to get it right. ("But it's for me!"etc...)
    2. Hawk-eyes. Those who try to follow every movement and every line on the skin as though they are actually moving the needles with telepathy. A bonus is when they swing their head the other direction in the middle of lining to see who just walked in the door. "No charge for that extra line, friend-o"
    3. People who refer to permanent things (tattoos) with vague or intangible answers. "How much for a name- where, how big and what style?" "On my arm. Not very big. Regular letters..."
    4. Folks who ask the line of questions that are the equivalent of playing Stairway to Heaven in a guitar store. "What's the craziest tattoo you've ever one? What's the most painful place to get a tattoo? Have you been an artist all your life?" I understand being nervous and unaware of how annoying some things can be...but it's still annoying.
    Plus many others already mentioned.
