    I'm sorry, but I don't get it.
What's the rush? Who needs a large tattoo that quickly anyway?
Is regular (shorter) sessions too much trouble? Even if you are traveling, I see no need to do 3 full consecutive days.
I'm gonna stick my neck out here and say that every sleeve that I've seen (in person) completed in marathon sessions or super-close consecutive sessions heals pretty rough. I'd love someone to prove me wrong and i hope someone can but I don't see how you can heal a full arm while maintaining some sort of normal life (which includes moving your limbs, going to the toilet, moving food to your face etc.) without having some colour drop-out or whatever. I find healing larger tattoos to be miserable at the best of times, particularly around the ditch, elbow, armpit etc. For me, marathon consecutive sessions means another trip for touch ups, which negates the need to finish in a short space of time anyway.
It usually takes just a little more thought from the tattooer to finish smaller sections of the tattoo with a mind to extending it later if the client doesn't want to live with an un-finished looking tattoo, or the manner CaptCanada described at the end of his post above. This can still be tough to heal, but is a more efficient use of time, particularly for people who travel long distances. But I guess you don't get so many bragging rights, just a solid, awesome tattoo.
Please bear in mind that I have occasionally and begrudgingly, tattooed the same person on 2 consecutive days to finish a large tattoo before they leave the country/go to prison or whatever, so that probably discounts my opinion.

i like the outline if it works with the design. i think stewart robson at frith st. tattoo did a fine job on this one...
i totally think mario is right too, cut out everything that doesn't need to be there. i always find that the tattoos that make a big impact, are simpler and less involved. filler can definitely look cool, when done right. but i prefer the negative space between tattoos, i also think it gives each piece a stronger impact and it adds more of a storyboard effect to the body, which i think reads better. stuart cripwell at spider murphy's executed this perfectly...

Has anyone ever thought maybe the reason Dann Higgs doesnt want anything to do with tattooing is the crazy Dan Higgs posts and sometimes creepy hero worship like the ones that happen here and everywhere else his name is mentioned. I mean ive never been tattooed by him nor met him, but i would think that its all pretty overwhelming.

exactly! rob ryan told me he was playing a show with dan and dan spotted a group of bearded-tattooed dudes in the crowd. dan leans over to rob and whispers "they're here!"...hahaha
these guys act like dan was lowered to earth from a ufo driven by jesus. he was a great tattooer, is a great artist and musician...they're turning him into a sid vicious type cartoon charecter to use as an icon to express your tribe and show how cool you are. what they don't realize is that shit is exactly what dan hated about tattooing. .

i finally got to see those legs in person two years ago, in san jose at the convention of the tattoo arts. i could not stop starring! and i wasn't the only one, there was a group of people watching him and stuart. it was weird to have a carnival feeling of checking out the "amazing tattooed man" at a tattoo convention. a truly beautiful work of art. who isn't jealous?!!

I've been enjoying seeing the tattoos Ross Nagle has been doing with the "outline" around some of his tattoos which I think makes it really stand out also with the little amounts of color.

This thing is fucking great. I think that it is as perfect of a tattoo as I have ever seen. I know that Nick is on this forum so I hope that he doesn't mind me posting this link here.

One thing to think about, get tattooed because you want the piece. Not just because that person happens to be doing a style that's currently in the spotlight. That is why so many people end up with a huge mix and match of work when they originally started off wanting all one style. They get caught up in the now and who's the big name. Get work because you like it, not because you see it all over blogs, magazines, and the internet. Would you have wanted that same style of work if you had never seen Thomas Hoopers tattoos? I say this because there are other artsts out there who excell in the same sort of work.

Flying to Rockford Il at the end of may to interview Zeis's Daughter Joanne. Joanne and her husband ran the supply business for a period of time after Zeis passed away and then sold the remaining stock to Lyle Tuttle for his museum. I am honored to speak with Joanne and I am excited as her input will add a level of depth to the book. I can't wait.

i posted a thomas hooper picture at the top of this page, that is pretty small and doesn't do the piece justice. there were a bunch of nice, big close up's of that tattoo added to his website today. it's super sick and worth checking out, his whole website is extremely informative, with an abundance of material that is tattoo and not tattoo related. this picture was just posted there too. fuuuck...
