I am pretty excited about how creative and involved i've been, not only tattooing but in the tattoo world---
I was asked to and participated in an art show in NY
Two different tattooers books of flash
Drew a series prints that I was able to sell, trade , gift and donate to a couple of auctions for good causes
Wrote and sold a satirical book on getting in to tattooing
And for the first time was a feature in a super tattoo magazine
And still happily married & raising a family! (;

For years I used a footstool, and used my crossed my leg as a rest. Does anybody even do that anymore?

Annabelle moved to the Elephant Sanctuary in California, Bob Barker came and got her. We have two polar bears now in a beautiful enclosure.
Hey Ma, you got me!!!!
I know! And what a blessing you are.

Oh my goodness! @Deb Yarian! I was just looking at your instagram and saw the picture you posted of Star the reindeer. I remember her from when I was a kid! I had no idea she was still around. It may not be true anymore but she used to be in a chain link enclosure and kids could come and pet her through the fence. I am so thrilled to see her! :-)
Brings back so many memories.
(I cried when I heard a few years ago that Binky the polar bear had died. We lived pretty much right across the street from the Anchorage zoo when I was in kindergarten and I spent many, many hours hanging out near Binky. He was my favorite animal there... Annabelle the elephant was a close second.)
Wow, what a coincidence& small world! Star is still loving in the same place- right near the park strip. When did youcmove away?

I feel for you..I don't think i could live up there isolated like that.We don't have a great tattoo community in Jersey, but there are a few shops near me that i really like, and that do good work. The good thing is that NYC isn't far,and you can't get much better than that.Do you know Reed Leslie | Alaska Tattoo Artist, Body Art, Artist, Tattoos Galore in Anchorage..He does some nice realistic work.I'm from NYC originally- I love it!
Yes, I know of Reed, he does do nice realistic work. We aren't friends though.

Don't get me wrong, I love Alaska & wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
Plus, i'm very fortunate that I get to work with my family in our shop, which I love---

I don't know about other areas of the world-
But it's pretty isolated up here in regards to any " tattoo community"
I miss the comraderie of other tattooers and like minded people.
Just saying):

Hi Mike !!!! Nice to see you on here

Cliff owned shops in S.F. and el-Lay. He had a "silent Parnter" in both, but I don't know who it was. He, together with Dale Grande and Buddy McFall, bought out Lyle Tuttle in L.A., then He bought out Buddy, then finally Dale traded his half of the L.A. studio for Cliff's half of Chicago Tattooing Company.
The man was a trip, for sure, and you know, all of them tolerated a kid hanging around their shop watching and waiting...now that's class. Course I spose they figured they'd make their money back from me in a few years-and they did!

If you're gonna put your art out there for the public to see, and it bites someone else's style so hard don't be shocked when people say something about it.
I'm not saying Cleen sucks. I'm saying his shit looks like he's been looking at a few too many Conn prints, and, his work is also not as good as Conn's.
Go to google image search and type in Chris Conn tattoo, then type in Chris Cleen and you should be able to see what I mean.
That's my opinion. I know others who feel the same, I know others who don't. Decide for yourself.
And as far as people not being here to defend themselves, you'd be surprised who reads this forum but doesn't have an account or post. I've received messages from people before about something I've said here, for all we know both Cleen and Conn read this shit.
Ursula--- I have to disagree with you, I wasn't familiar with Cris Cleen's work. After reading your post I went to look at his work and I don't see any similarity ( other than possibly his limited color palette, and the color red) to Chris Conn's. I just think it has a totally different feel to it.

I really don't like this!! I think her options on covering the original tattoo, we're pretty limitless--- I can't imagine her wanting a solid black square on her back if she were getting something on bare skin. This is a situation where I would have refused to do the tattoo--- not sing judgmental , just exercising my right to decline.

As a tattooer and shop owner I pay particular attention to how I am treated when I walk in to a tattoo shop----- I 'm older and i'm not particularly cool, hip looking, overly attractive, and I normally don't walk around in a tank top and shorts, with exposed tattoos. That being said, I shouldn't have to give another tattooist a resume to expect good customer service, as a customer or fellow tattooist.
If able, you should be kind and courteous to every one that walks through your door.

I agree. Also, if I could afford (or when I can) to make it to California, booking an appointment with Chris Conn would be at the top of the agenda. To get back on the topic of pet peeves...for me, the only big one I've encountered from a customer's perspective is having to listen to stupid, offensive shit. I realize that a lot of people would consider me to be overly PC, which is fine (I disagree to a large extent with what most people consider to be "political correctness" and see it more as "not being an asshole", but whatever), but it definitely turns me off to hear racist or homophobic shit when I'm getting tattooed. On one trip to a pretty well-known shop, my buddy that I was staying with (who is gay) decided that he wanted a tattoo too and came with and got tattooed. He was super stoked on it and really liked the dude that we both got tattooed by, but during his tattoo a couple of the other tattooers hanging out made a few gay jokes (unrelated to my friend), and it was pretty awkward and uncomfortable for both of us for a minute. Consequently, I probably won't ever get tattooed by those dudes, despite them making rad tattoos. With a finite amount of skin and a Want list longer than I'll ever be able to get through, I want to enjoy my tattoo experience as much as possible, so I'm gonna go with the tattooer I don't worry about having to endure hearing go off on some "faggot" shit during my session.
-----------Unfortunately, or fortunately - I've found many tattooers are often without boundaries and are verbally expressive. Many that I know wouldn't willingly go out of their way to hurt anybody- but their choice in music and speech borders on insensitive---- Whether it's talking about specific sexual techniques, religion, politics, gender preference, stance on euthanasia, vegan vs carnivore etc. rarely have I encountered a "PC" shop.
Our shop has a sign on the door stating "graphic images and colorful language spoken here"just in case.
We share a building with a religious - charitable organization and are right next door to a Baptist Church. One of my husband's ( the reason we have the sign) customer's was going to make a sign for my husband- " if you don't like the language here, go next door!" But i'm definitely not making excuses or saying you should subject yourself or friends to an uncomfortable atmosphere.

My husband and I are big fans of horse racing...we decided, almost on a whim, to get this particular mare off the track and retired to a good home. We had been following her for three years and she was quickly disappearing into the cracks, so I felt compelled to at least TRY to get her.Local writer for the Daily Racing Form caught wind of our project and did a little piece on it, it was really cool, and I hope it inspires other people:
Retired racehorses: One fan does her part to find mare a home | Daily Racing Form
Very cool! My nephew was raised in the horse racing community - by his grandfather - a race horse trainer.
Very interesting

Yes, more tattoo legends are obviously welcome (which you most certainly are). Sassy remarks would probably even be deemed necessary, but I've never seen anything but sincerity from you, @Deb Yarian.
Well THANK YOU!!! Legend in my own mind maybe, no- not even there.

I wanted to apologize and give an explanation about something that has been bothering me.
I realize my presence here has been quite scarce in recent months, nonexistent, really.
When this forum first began, I was excited to participate- as there was not another forum that I wished to be part of. So, I looked forward to being a part of this one.
In the beginning I enjoyed the, forum, blogs, interviews and participants and online comeraderie of both tattooists and non tattooists alike. But, what I found happening after awhile, was that my replies and responses were very often, and increasingly defensive and hostile. So,moderators- for that I apologize.
I should have found a way to communicate my thoughts and opinions ( as a tattooer of 30 yrs + ) to tattooers and non tattooers alike.
Looking forward to participating again
Thanks

I think I have more of an issue with the "human canvases" than any other issue.
I've had clients empathize with them- over poorly done tattoos etc., but my thinking is - they get what they ask for.
They voluntarily submit to being on the show without knowing which tattooist they will get tattooed by, and often don't even have much of a say about what they are getting.
So they get what they get and deserve it, imo! Really, just so they can be on tv?
Why don't they support their local tattooers?
I would not have much sympathy if one of my customers went on tv and was less than pleased with their tattoo.

Our shop is located right across from our children's elementary school.A public- State of Alaska, board of education school.
We have been invited to participate in a display, question/ answer period for the past 2 years , and have attended.
I got the impression , but couldn't hear the video, that his children attend some sort of Fundamental ( Christian?) school. If that is the case, why would he even support and choose to have his children go to a school, whose ideas differ so greatly from his own.
We support our local schools and military and athletic teams etc. One year we donated a gift certificate and t shirt to the High School grad blast. The following year, the volunteer organizer said that because of parent complaints ( about promoting tattooing) they only wanted cash or tshirts vs gift certificates, to which we replied- absolutely not! We weren't going to support any group or organization which did not support us-- and I voiced my complaint to the head organizer. We received an apology and they graciously accepted our gift certificates.
Let parent's counsel their own children-- not everybody's
