Hi everybody,
I am not sure if I mentioned this before, but I am an undergraduate studying sociology. For the past year or so, I have been conducting an ethnographic study on tattoo artists and gender. I have spent many hours engaging in participant observation at two tattoo shops and have interviewed local tattoo artists.
I am currently working on my paper but am struggling to find information on the number of tattoo artists in the United States and the gender breakdown. I have been looking through the Bureau of Labor Statistics' (BLS) website, but I cannot find specific statistics on tattoo artists. The BLS lumps craft and fine artists together and doesn't provide a demographic breakdown.
I am not sure if this information is available, but I am trying my best to provide as accurate a description of the industry demographics as possible. Do any of you have recommendations as to how I might find this information?

@TrixieFaux Cute family. :)

I'm personally grateful for the built-in filter that my tattoos provide; I have enough now that the guys who don't like 'em mostly don't bother to approach me. Narrowing the dating pool a little isn't necessarily a bad thing--a whole category of "not good for me" I don't have to worry about!
My current boyfriend has no tattoos but has seen me through about half of my collection, and has been pretty supportive of it.
Another benefit of tattoo collecting ;)

The kind where I walk in and no matter what people say hello and are friendly.
I've been lucky to find so many of those around the bay area.
I definitely agree. I've only been to one tattoo shop where that wasn't the case-- I didn't go back.

Just another way for people who don't like tattoos but want to "be tattooed" to do so , one step below white ink tattoos.
Ugh, white ink tattoos. There's quite a few young women where I live who want, like, or have white ink tattoos.
And probably toxic.I wouldn't be surprised.

I've wondered, too. @Delicious I don't think it's creepy that you look at pictures of people on Instagram. They posted the pictures after all.

Welcome! Who have you got tattoos from?

@Graeme is right. You are now required to share pictures

Love this thread already

I have been wondering the same thing...

Just started reading the magazine. Definitely enjoying it :)

I think it just depends on what you want and how you'd like to go about getting tattoos. I went to the same artist for some of my tattoos because I was more comfortable going to the same person. Now, I am interested in finding great artists and having tattoos from many different artists... And since joining LST, I want to save up money and travel to get tattooed. :o

I love hearing about all the great things you all are doing. :)
Next week, I start my last semester as an undergrad. I'm ecstatic. Now, I just need to figure out what I want to do before I apply to PhD programs. I am happy that I decided to take a break to get some more work experience, etc. Not stressing over grad school has enabled me to take time to consider what is important to me and to focus on other aspects of my life.

Welcome! I agree with @Delicious. You may learn a lot from this forum. I know I am learning quite a bit. The most important thing is that you like your tattoos. However, there is so much to consider when you get tattoos. Taking a little time to research tattooers and to think about the tattoo goes a long way.

Ahahaha, @Amok. That definitely made me laugh.

That's terrible! I am glad you are letting everyone know about this guy. He does not deserve to call himself a tattooer. That's terrifying to think people likely went to this guy unaware of what he was doing. Ugh.

Panther head on your pimple? Pop it! Let us know if it leads to more panther heads or a full crawling panther. Very curious... What causes a tattoo to be on a pimple?
Ink and Iron convention.

You can bring kids. I saw a few kids there last year. I wouldn't recommend taking them into Sin Alley. Although I did see a man with a young child on his shoulders watching the pole dancers. My friend and I laughed with a guy that was trying to get a picture of the kid and the pole dancers in the background. I was surprised to see a kid there-- I thought that area was 18+. Otherwise, it's a pretty kid-friendly event as long as he/she is well-behaved.

Last year, there was a man walking around with a young boy (maybe around 8-10 yrs old) who had no shirt on and was covered in temporary tattoos. A women asked if she could take a picture of him and the boy responded, "Five Dollars." So some kids seem to have fun. I don't know what your daughter's interests are, but she may like the cars, rockabilly people, and seeing the Queen Mary.
