  1. Have you decided yet? If you do pay for the tattoo, does this mean you can choose the artist?

I was all set to go for it :-)

Her BFF convinced her that the "responsible" thing to do would be to ask for money instead... since when are 18 year old kids responsible?????

Her birthday still isn't until next Saturday though so we'll see if she changes her mind.

and yes, if I'm buying I get to pick who does it - which is why I was all set to go for it!! Get my baby girl started off right!!

I've been traveling a whole lot recently: spent a week in the Pacific Northwest with my sister--my first time west of Chicago actually. I fell in love with Portland and hope I get to spend a lot more time in that part of the country--surely one day I will escape Ohio? It's so pretty out there! Managed to visit some shops and got tattooed by Cheyenne at Atlas, but it was a family/work trip and it was honestly really fun to go somewhere and not have the trip revolve around getting tattooed. Headed to Nashville next weekend to see a couple Lucero shows and so this classics nerd can see the fake Parthenon! Then New York, again. Fun!

    West Coast Best Coast!!! ;)

  2. It's too late for you this time but I've been taking arnica tablets to reduce the swelling. You need to start taking them before you get tattooed though...like starting a day before, then throughout the day you get tattooed, and then after depending on the swelling. I still get swelling with it, but the last session hit my ditch, inner arm, and kind of into my armpit and it wasn't too bad. When I got my other inner arm done, without arnica, it basically doubled in size. I know there are a million variables as to why people handle tattoos differently, but I think it's at the very least worth trying.

I've had good results with arnica for other things. It hadn't occurred to me to use it pre-tattoo, I'll definitely give it a shot next time and see what happens.

  3. putting this here because there were all those "parent-child" tattoo days posts recently and I don't know where else this would fit.

My daughter's 18th birthday is coming up - we were having lunch the other day and I asked her what she wanted for her birthday and she hemmed and hawed a little bit but eventually says "well, since you're all into tattoos, I was kinda hoping you'd pay for a tattoo for me".

    Awww! Kinda sweet right?

Honestly though, I'm a little bit on the fence about it. What she really needs is money. She's not working right now... she's flat broke and living on ramen noodles and canned green beans...

(when I asked her what she wanted I was sure "money" would be her answer)

    Hmmm...

    I'm thinking on it...

Not sure yet what I'll do.

  4. I'm kinda not into getting a back piece extending to my butt neither, but what am I really gonna get tattooed on my butt instead? One shots will look kinda weird. So yeah, full on back piece extending to the butt... I'm on board.

I wanted to start my back piece soon, but I always tell myself to wait till I'm in a committed relationship, so she can apply the lotion afterwards, haha.

Or should I just get it done while I'm single and dry heal the damn thing? Kinda joking, kinda serious, haha.

I laughed when I read this @CABS !! I've had pretty much the exact same thoughts in my head about it!! :D

  5. Anxiety about healing tattoos is totally normal but as you get more tattoos and begin to better understand how your body deals with them and heals them it will get less stressful. Healing will still be as annoying as shit though. Welcome to LST.

This is so funny to me!! :D

I guess it's just taken for granted that if you're *here* that you'll be getting a lot more tattoos!!

  6. Hey Guys!!!

    I've been missing y'all!!!!

I left my contract in Central Texas and am back home on the farm in Oklahoma for a little bit. The internet there is spotty and best, I've barely been able to check the activity stream and posting is pretty much out of the question.

I'm in St Louis for the weekend at a conference so will do my best to get caught up on what's been happening around here.

Really and truly missed you guys :D

  7. @else, from your visit to Electric 13, do you get the impression that they're walk-in friendly? I'm gonna be in Austin next week and I'd like to grab something small if I have time, but I'm trying to keep my expectations realistic.

I know that they *do* take walk-ins (they took one while I was there in fact), but you'd be best off to call ahead... For all but the last hour or so that I was there it was just me and Paco.

It's a really nice shop with a great atmosphere. Super comfortable!! Spacious. Parking right there is a little bit of a hassle though, but I expect that's the case over much of Austin.

  8. I don't know necessarily that they've changed my life, but I certainly enjoy having them. They're like accessories to my body. I have a Tigger, and he more than any of the others has been a draw for kids and adults-he's the one people ask about more often. I was worried when I started my job last year at a preschool that people would be freaked out, but so far everyone has been accepting, and the kids seem to get a kick out of them. They're very gentle the times I've gotten new ones, very cautious not to hurt me. After I got my feet redone, one of the boys came to school a couple days later and had "tattooed" the tops of his feet w/orange paint. So far, no notes have been sent to school about kids drawing on themselves more than usual, although instead of just one stick on tattoo, they come in w/5 or 7 all over.

My daughter was so into drawing on herself when she was little!! Every time she got ahold of a marker she was coloring on her arms and legs... one time (while I was out of town) she got into a multi-pack of colored sharpies and drew on herself scalp to toe!!

I'm not at all surprised that now, as she approaches her 18th birthday, she's planning to get a tattoo!!

  9. If someone called me a tattoo collector, I couldn't ARGUE, I guess it all depends on their tone though whether or not I'd be upset at them for it. If they mean it in an asshole/snotty way, meh, fuck them right? It'd be upsetting if it was an artist, to get some attitude like that, but I haven't run across that. Most people who tattoo me just ask who's done mine because they just really wanna know who's work it is. Do they know them? Shit like that.

Just to be clear, Paco and his buddy weren't being shitty about it, they were specifically talking about how it's kinda cool but also adds extra pressure when they're tattooing a collector. They didn't mean it in any kind of negative way at all.

I was just a little taken aback. Although tattoo collectors are something I'm aware of, I had never even considered putting myself in that category... really, just a person who is into getting tattoos!!!

The getting them from a bunch of different people is as much a consequence of my work as it is a choice, I move every couple months or so, it would be impossible for me to stick with only one or two tattooers...

  10. First of all I love where this thread has headed and I would like to see pictures. Secondly you couldn't be more right. A couple silhouette tattoos, maybe a bio-hazard symbol tattoo and some doc martens, I'll take that look over the girl playing tattooed pinup girl most days.

I have a couple silhouette tattoos... my two old ones... planning to cover them with something *much better* one of these days, but I do still kinda love them. They for sure represent a specific time in my life...

(and I want to see pictures too!! where's the bars?????)

  11. I've been looking at tree tattoo ideas for well over a year already but I still haven't physically visited a tattoo shop for their ideas and sketches.

sounds like you know what the next step is!!! Get on that!!

Choose your shop wisely and you won't have a thing to worry about.
