  1. I feel like this part needs an explanation. Did you accidentally get tattooed by him somehow? Was it such a small tattoo that you aren't counting it? Or are you saying you want to get tattooed by him again? :)
  2. Anyone can be your favourite! And you can have any list or ranking that you want! I don't think anyone was/is offended or upset at all. You just have to realize that sometimes @Graeme doesn't like things. And that's ok too.
  3. My UK artist list: Joe Ellis because I was tattooed by him and is a really nice guy. Soap because he tattooed my friend and is a really nice guy.
  4. It's the fountain pens isn't it? You've joined a fountain pen forum and you're leaving us for them!
  5. I agree with the above advice to talk to your artist first. If s/he doesn't have a preference though, I would say it would depend mostly on how soon you plan to complete the tattoo. Like if you're outlining one day and then colouring two weeks later, that would be fine. If you're waiting a year to finish it (due to finances or whatever), then I would say go with a complete element so you don't have an unfinished tattoo for so long. Really though a lot depends on composition, etc. so your artist will give you the best guidance to base your decision on.
  6. So my dad is actually a type 1.5 diabetic, but this thread fits anyway. I posted the other day that I was going to take him to get a 60th birthday tattoo, his first. I think he was pretty excited to get it. Unfortunately on Sunday night he went on the internet and looked into getting tattooed as a diabetic. Most things he found said it was ok, as long as blood sugar was under control. Unfortunately there were warnings about getting tattooed, such as a diabetic has a higher chance of infection and potentially amputation as a result. Which is no doubt true, but even so the risk is extremely small. So anyway, he bailed on the tattoo for now. Which I'm ok with, it's his arm after all. He wants to get his A1c number below 7, which apparently is a good indicator that your sugars are ok (currently he's at about 8-something). Still disappointing though, I was probably more excited than he was to go. If there are other insulin-dependent diabetics on here who have been tattooed (and not had anything amputated as a result), please share your story!
  7. I have a Black Anvil Tattoo t-shirt that has it as FT.W. - so when people ask I just say it means Fort Wayne.
  8. I can't believe I didn't credit the artist! Very embarassing. Done by Steve Byrne. Added that to the original post as well.
  9. I think there needs to be more than two entrants in a given month - even though one of the above two will end up the winner. I'll throw my chest in and hope to have a chance at the 'best one-shot tattoo of the month' ;) edit: Done by Steve Byrne at Rock of Ages in Austin.
  10. Upcoming tattoo - but not for me. My dad's 60th birthday is this weekend, and so next week I'll be taking him to get his first tattoo. It's something he's talked about wanting since I first started getting tattooed a few years ago, but I don't think he'd ever just go do it on his own. I asked him if it would be something he'd like to do with me and he's pretty excited I think. (I'm glad because if he didn't want one I have no idea what I'd get him!) We're headed to The Pearl Harbor Gift Shop next week sometime, probably Monday so he can get a walk-in from Tim Pausinger (my recommendation, but I told him he could pick whoever he wanted). 50 years ago my great-grandfather founded a ship repair company in my hometown, and my dad has worked there for 40 years. The logo used to be a simple traditional anchor and rope so I think that's what he'll end up getting.
  11. This is exactly what I was going to say. If you contact either of these shops I believe you will end up with a good tattoo.
  12. As soon as I saw this headline I thought of this forum: Flaming hawk with snake in its talons sparks $10k brush fire I have no tattoo money in the budget currently or I'd get it myself. Flaming eagle with a snake, powerlines in the background? So epic. Make it happen, someone! Also, just as an fyi - there is a severe thunderstorm watch on for Southern Ontario today.
  13. I would say it was traditional, but just a certain distinct style of traditional that this artist has. To me it has a certain folk-art quality to it.
  14. Nice tattoo! Already completed tattoos should go in to Latest Tattoo Lowdown - yours isn't really "Upcoming" anymore ;)
  15. The value of my arguing time is also subjective!! :) But you're probably right.
  16. Haha! Well, I don't think I paid too much at all. I am quite certain none of you guys would think so either. My friends who think I pay absurd prices are either have no tattoos or actually choose their tattooer based on the low hourly rate she has because she has a studio in her basement. True story. And for the most part I don't even tell them the real price. I just give a vague round-number answer. Because they won't get it anyway. Value is subjective! Further reading, because I'm an Austrian economics nerd in addition to being a tattoo nerd: The subjective theory of value is a theory of value which advances the idea that the value of a good is not determined by any inherent property of the good, nor by the amount of labor required to produce the good, but instead value is determined by the importance an acting individual places on a good for the achievement of their desired ends. This theory is one of the core concepts of the Austrian School of Economics. While the modern version of this theory was created independently and nearly simultaneously by William Stanley Jevons, Léon Walras, and Carl Menger in the late 19th century it had in fact been advanced in the Middle Ages and Renaissance but did not gain widespread acceptance at that time. (from wikipedia)
  17. Almost all of my friends think that I paid an absurd amount for all of my tattoos. The price is the price. Maybe the artist considers the piece special for some reason and s/he wants to limit how many people get it? Raising the price would ensure only the piece only goes to the most dedicated of collectors. Here's your chance to prove yourself. ;)
  18. I was asked to give a budget for my recent chest tattoo (my most expensive to date), and it didn't bother me at all. The way I figure it, if I trust this person to permanently mark my body, I should choose someone I trust enough to be fair with pricing.
  19. Urn by Ron Henry Wells. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. Stop in Arizona (Mesa, which is a suburb of Phoenix) at Immaculate Tattoo. It's an amazing shop.
  21. I'm going to try to post a picture from my phone here: By Steve Byrne at Rock of Ages. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  22. I don't know how to share this type of Instagram post, and certainly can't from my phone, but here's a link to my chest tattoo, done today by Steve Byrne at Rock of Ages. http://instagram.com/p/0i-naeNBEe/ Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    HI!

Welcome to LST! You could do any of those things you suggest (rework, cover up, leave it). It just depends on how much it bothers you. I do agree that grey ink was a poor choice made by somebody. My suggestion would be to not worry too much about this one and get an all new, awesome tattoo somewhere else on you (not by this artist!).
  24. The only thing that upsets me about this is that the restaurant apologized. Their place, their rules.
