    I believe that was me @Dan S
@Delicious To the extent of my knowledge i am the only woman in my whole extended family apart from one cousin (who has a tiny trible symbol on her chest) that is tattooed... That includes men.
I started to get the usual grief when i began getting tattooed.. a few colour realism butterflies, a little script that was all seen as acceptable however when i began getting larger tattoos people began to pipe up with their opinions.
    are you joining the circus?
are you going to be a pirate?
you are going to look so butch?
what are you going to do when this early midlife crisis is over?
    you look like a lesbian!
you WERE such a girly girl and now...
    etc etc.
There comes a point in life when you have to make the choice between expressing yourself how YOU choose to because frankly other people might not be around for nearly as long as your tattoos will be. I've always had hella low self confidence but now when i look in the mirror and catch a glimpse of my tattoos i smile. They make ME happy on MY body. Other people will get over it.
Sorry for digressing from the point of the thread.
I have had a length discussion about native american indian tattoos at my local shop today and i've realised i am 'supersticious' enough to feel the need to have my indian girlhead and cheif wearing the correct headdress... that's as far as it goes for me though. Tattoos are things i perceive to be beautiful that i want to wear on my body.. n thats about the size of it :)

Healing my sternum is proving to be a pain in the ass. Bras suck at the best of times but right now I'm cursing their very existence!

Too many to list! Most recently ..
'But you were such a pretty girl Holly'
and from one of my older ladies who's nails i do
'You're never going to meet an oil baron and skip off happily into the distance now are you dear?'
On the whole i have to say most of the comments i get are pretty positive. In the early days of becoming visibly tattooed I was really conscious of being stared at especially by older women... now though i don't even notice!

i just love them, and i love how different they are from artist to artist. i suppose thats why lady heads are a traditional tattoo in the first place... women are attractive to look at.. why not cover your body in attractive things :) Thanks guys!

This is quite an interesting topic for me. I've recently (well about 7 months) come out of a ten year relationship. During this time i had a few small tattoos. Rubbish ones that i got when i was 14 and doing it to be cool. My ex doesnt have tattoos and when he's seen my recent coverage he is disgusted by them. Which only serves to make me certain this is exactly what i want! I find tattooed and heavily tattooed guys attractive. I really love their choice to express themselves in this way and generally (not always) they have far more interesting stories to tell. So for me right now in my life i couldn't see myself with a person with no tatttoos...or someone with really bad tattoos.

I've never gotten a tattoo as a 'show piece'.. infact some of the tattoos i have that I love the most are in areas only the people very closest to me ever see..
and FYI we all know what the human body looks like... posting photographs of your body parts isn't gonna get you better tattoo advice ;)

Hello Ladies (and Gents!), I havent posted in absolutely ages but i've been reading with interest ! I'm getting my sternum tattooed tomorrow and i have to admit i'm pretty nervous... Generally i've found being tattooed ok so far however my partner has a relatively small tattoo on his sternum and he really really struggled with it!
I'm planning to wear a crop top kind of sports bra that is now too big for me (one of the downsides of any type of weight loss for me!) and also a vest top which im going to pull down around my waist. I'm really really self conscious about my lower tummy area after having carried two single pregnancies and one twin pregnancy!
This thread has been incredibly useful in the run up to this tattoo so thanks folks!

Have any of you seen the documentary G-DOG? It's about an amazing man, Father Greg Boyle, who helps men and women get out of gangs and turn their lives around. He runs an organization in L.A. called Homeboy Industries. They have rehab services, a cafe and a bakery that employs the ex gang members, and they have free laser tattoo removal for gang related tattoos or tattoos holding them back from getting work. It's really good. One of our good friends works there.

Don't worry about why other people get tattoos.
If you are looking for something that also has a "show piece" aspect, then recognize that you are asking to be judged by people. You are placing part of your self-worth into other people's reactions. If you choose something that is not timeless, then you risk people's opinions/judgements of the piece changing in negative ways over time. Are you ok with this? For example, trending bands and TV shows. What might seem all, "Whoa, cool dude" could easily end up being, "oh, yeah, whatever" years down the line. Can you accept that the show piece may no longer have the impact?
Yes, a tattoo will fade. If you want to keep it looking as good as possible for as long as possible, commit to wearing shirts more often and investing in ton of sunscreen.
