I am curious why bad tattoos are so popular. I mean, I can understand that someone who knows nothing about tattoos goes to a bad artist and gets a badly done tattoo. I did that myself. What I don't understand are why tattoos lacking any creativity or art are so popular.
For instance, why do people want to put typewriter text on themselves? Why do they want so much text but no images? Why do they want flowery, descriptive text but not an image of what that text is describing? This makes absolutely no sense to me. I've been as dumb as anybody regarding tattoos but one thing I've never had pop into my mind is to want words describing beautiful things rather than the beautiful things themselves.
Another one are the fads like the inifinity symbols, the text on the wrist and the exploding birds thing. Back in the 90s when I first got a tattoo the fads (the fairies, the curly tribal stuff on the lower back) at least were flattering. The current fads are so ugly. I saw a girl with the exploding birds and it looked like someone had attacked her with a marking pen. The small crap on the wrist thing looks like you're trying to sneak crib notes in to the test. The straight lines of text tattoos are so unflattering to men and women alike. I just don't understand.
Am I just an old fuddy-duddy complaining about the youth of today? Has there actually been a real change in the culture to prefer ugliness over color, shape, texture and art? Any ideas?

I agree with the comment about people being too timid and living life in fear. I quit a pretty good programming job to do this:

Got the commemorative tattoo a year after I completed hiking the trail. Spent two summers hiking that trail and the months in between and right after working some interesting and unusual jobs.
In fact, even though I have gotten tattoos that didn't turn out that well, I never regretted them because I have always valued living life to the fullest, just doing things that make life more interesting. Even if they don't always work out. Even if that means I've never been much of a career-oriented person.

Hey, I really like this idea.
The one I went by for my coverup was the 10 foot rule. I'm glad I did because being a big-boned gal (and I don't mean fat), it just looks a lot more flattering on my body.
As for cheap, I really someday want one of those cheap special promo tattoos (you know, like Friday the 13th or whatever) just for the experience and the ability to say I did something like that. The meaning would be: don't take things so seriously.

My own personal success story is I had an appointment scheduled for a cover-up for my ankle tattoo with one of the most highly praised tattoo artists in my town. His waiting list was 6 months. I figured I'd chosen well.
Because I was so excited with my appointment drawing near, I started looking at blogs about tattoos. I learned a lot in the process. I also started to realize that I had been wrong all these years about traditional tattoos and that I really liked them a lot. I went back to the artist's facebook and saw a tattoo he had just posted and was appalled. I kept looking and it seemed he sometimes did really nice work and sometimes did really poor work. None of it was really traditional. Japanese maybe, but nothing American trad. I started to worry I might be making a mistake.
I canceled the appointment and instead make one for a totally different tattoo with another guy at another shop who had really nice work in his portfolio. I got a really nice tattoo. While he tattooed me he told me he sometimes refers people to another shop so I looked them up. I went there for my coverup just to have a new experience, see if I was missing anything.
Now I can't seem to stop looking at all these great tattoos and whenever I see this really badly done stuff either around the campus where I work or on various websites, I just feel so bad for these people. Meanwhile I really want more tattoos but am torn about whether I should. Maybe it's okay just to look for a while.

Well then what is it about people these days that they walk around with so many sob stories that they absolutely have to put on their bodies with typewriter font? I mean, my cats and dogs have all died, my grandparents all died, and in my 20s I walked around with dysthymia like nobody's business but I never once wanted to tattoo a word on myself about it. I went to meetings instead.

Your girlfriend can lift all the weights she wants. I can deadlift 165lbs and squat almost my bodyweight and can bench half my bodyweight (I'm female, 48 years old and about 130lbs) and you can hardly see a muscle anywhere on me.

Oh and Ian if you are still reading my boring post, in case you ever mention this to J, let him know that his tattoo changed everything for me. It was the first really good tattoo I ever had. He did perfect lines, everything so crisp, even the corners. But what changed everything was that it was so big and the subject matter is something all my friends can envy. All the positive feedback made me realize having a tattoo can be fun. It made me want to fix all my ugly old tattoos. I may go back to J someday for future new tattoos. There are three guys in SB I've gotten good tattoos from now. It's fun to try new tattooers.

I had a 20-year-old ankle bracelet of small flowers I have hated for pretty much all 20 years. Last night I went in for my cover-up. It is not finished.
Here is the side that is done. I think it is done anyway.

    Here's the front

Here's the side that isn't done where you can see the old stuff

Here's where it meets in the back

I lack any artistic skill so basically it was all up to the artist. My only suggestion was bigger flowers and then after he drew them and there was that empty space in the front, I suggested those red ball thingies. He's a genius as far as I'm concerned. Look at those amazing leaves! Even the leaves are beautiful. I was really scared when I saw how big he was going but oh my god, look at how nice it looks on my big fat leg!
We ran out of time last night and I was getting pretty swollen and exhausted. I am really looking forward to seeing the final product.
(P.S. The map and emblem of the Pacific Crest Trail were already there.)

I don't know if you can see the swelling in my ankle, but here it is.

I think it was even worse by the end of the day.
The other side of my leg is a matching rose but it was not colored in. It was less swollen but more red. Even the untattooed parts were red.
Judging by the experiences everybody is describing here, I'd say if you just have nasty swelling and redness that it's probably normal and unrelated to the color. Of course, I don't know for sure. Just thought if your leg looks anything like mine maybe you'll feel better about it.
Hopefully I'll get the other side finished on Monday. More swelling...
