  1. Dear Irezumi-

You are right. Your original comment was the perfect example as to why I don’t participate in art forums because most people are clueless as to what goes into making a successful piece. It was a very simple question and I apologize for blowing your mind. The Virgin of Guadalupe is packed with symbolism that is pertinent to its structure and becasue of that I rarely see any great examples. I have personally drawn this image dozens of times over the past year and am yet to be pleased with any of them. I assumed tattoo fans would be more open to sharing their favoirte designs in hopes of aquiring some new view points that would help me with my interests in the subject. If you don’t know what I am talking about then you should probably not post anything.

  2. First time thread poster:

Any good Virgin of Guadalupe tattoos out there? I feel like it is hard to find a good one to study from. Traditional prefered but it would be nice to see any good ones. I find this to be one of the more challenging designs in tattooing, (especially trad).

Our Lady of Guadalupe (Spanish: Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe), also known as the Virgin of Guadalupe (Spanish: Virgen de Guadalupe) is a celebrated Roman Catholic icon of the Virgin Mary, an image on a tilma, or peasant cloak, attributed in some accounts to Marcos Cipac de Aquino, an Indian painter.

Traditional accounts tell that the peasant Juan Diego saw at the Hill of Tepeyac, near Mexico City, a vision of a girl of fifteen or sixteen years of age, surrounded by light. It was the early morning of December 9, 1531 (celebrated as the Feast of the Immaculate Conception in the Spanish Empire).[1] Speaking to him in Nahuatl, his language, the girl asked that a church be built at that site in her honor; from her words, Juan Diego recognized the girl as the Virgin Mary. Diego told his story to the Spanish Archbishop of Mexico City, Fray Juan de Zumárraga, who instructed him to return to Tepeyac Hill, and ask the "lady" for a miraculous sign to prove her identity. The first sign was the Virgin's healing Juan's uncle. The Virgin told Juan Diego to gather flowers from the top of Tepeyac Hill. Although December was very late in the growing season for flowers to bloom, Juan Diego found Castilian roses, not native to Mexico, on the normally barren hilltop. The Virgin arranged these in his peasant tilma cloak. When Juan Diego opened his cloak before Bishop Zumárraga on December 12, the flowers fell to the floor, and in their place on the fabric was the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, miraculously imprinted there.[2]

  3. Japanese seems like the best bet but make sure it is an artist properly trained in Japanese style tattooing. State of Grace is a great place but it is pretty far from LA. You may even be able to contact one of the artists at SOG to suggest someone in your area that would do a legit job. Seems like Panama would have a lot of shops because of the canal...what is tattooing like in Panama?

  4. Hi! I think it's great that you are trying to get feed back from people that know their tattoos! Tattoos have many styles but this particular one would be difficult for an artist to do. If you want to get the best result then find a tattoo artist with a style you like, then give him this image and tell him to make it his own. You should feel comfortable enough with the abilities of the artist to trust his vision. If you are trying to save money or assume every artist can draw then the artist will give you this exact design to please you and it probably won't stand the test of time.

  5. Thanks Duffa! Happy I finally got myself online here. Brisbane is a great city but I am yet to find a full time position at a shop. Illustrated styles seem to be most common so this trad guy is still looking for a home. And yourself? Are you from Brisbane?

So kind of you Carolyn. It's good to know that you are always in more corner. I certainly do miss the Bay and having the chance to sit down for a beer with you guys.

  6. So nice to see someone really taking the incentive to research tattoos on a proper forum. I only wish that all my clients would do that. I am new here so I will just throw in a few suggestions to consider before you start: 1. Don't get stuck on themes 2. Consider your palette and the longevity of the colors you like 3. I would start an area and then finish the area instead of the bird shot approach.

    Does this help?
