I once painted my face for halloween up like a sugar skull. I was really happy with it, until I read an article about cultural appropriation and I felt conflicted. This article tore strips into non-Mexican people who wore sugar skull makeup or had sugar skull tattoos.
I figured, as a white westerner, it's not up to me to decide if it's cultural appropriation or not. Then a friend of mine who is Mexican said she fully supported sugar skull makeup/tattoos. So... I guess the question is whether it is a case of cultural appropriation or not... the opinion on which seems to be pretty individual.
I guess get what you want then?

I've read some stuff before on 'teh interwebz' about cultural appropriation and tattoos, specifically around the idea that if you are of one culture and get a tattoo from another culture (specifically if the latter culture is considered a minority) that it somehow devalues their heritage and traditions.
Some blogs (I will not link to them here) take photos of people with tattoos they consider to be cultural appropriation and post them online, calling them racist. Specific tattoos that are targeted appear to be anything American Indian, Romany, or Dia de los Muertos related.
Thoughts?

I would just like to add that I clicked on the link in the first post, and I saw a Miskatonic University T-shirt. Cool ass shit.
I was considering buying that shirt!

I had my first client pass away since I entered the field (Social Work/Mental Health). Tough stuff, but in a way I'm glad I'm experiencing it early in my career...
I've been nervous of this myself. Had 2 clients last night talking about wanting to commit suicide, and one with capgras syndrome. I love my job but it can be pretty draining.

I think the ladies thread is becoming infamous!

@Zillah what else did you do besides seeing our silly mascot! I've been to New Zealand too, visited Auckland, Rotoroa, a few other places I can't remember right now. As someone who plays rugby, New Zealand was a great experience.
We went to this awesome place (I can't remember the name) where you could see birds and butterflies, and the birds would sit on you and you could feed them.
Cool that you visited New Zealand!

Today she was talking about a coherent upper arm (credit due but due to my poor memory I can't remember who coined it.)
That would be @HaydenRose and her 'large cohesive upper arm' tattoo ;)

In the last couple of weeks I've found myself beginning to look into graphic novels. I haven't read comics in more than 20 years, but a friend pointed me to a great one on Gettysburg. Does anyone have any recommendations for a neophyte comic reader?
I totally recommend:
- Sandman, Persepolis and Maus (as already suggested)
- 'Fun Home' by Alison Bechdel
- Anything by Jason, 'Hey...Wait' is a good one
- The 'Fables' series
- The Mouse Guard series by David Petersen
- 'American Born Chinese' by Gene Luen Yang
- 'Shortcomings' by Adrian Tomine
- 'Clyde Fans' by Seth
- 'Ice House' by David Clowes
- 'The Cleaners' by Mark Wheaton
My partner suggests 'Y: The Last Man' and 'Saga' by Brian K Vaughan.

These are my findings:
Doing what you want to is cool and never a turn-off for the right person.
I surveyed 1 person for this poll. 1 out of 1 agreed. The beardo in the other room would probably agree w/me to though. So let's just say 100% of the tattooed women and bearded men in this house were on board.
I have peer reviewed this study and I agree with all findings

@Jnvlv sorry for your loss :( Losing a pet is very, very hard.

We spent 9 months of hell getting him off the juice. I never slept more than 4 hours in a row, was up multiple times a night testing, sometimes up all night surfing him on honey when his pancreas unexpectedly sputtered out some insulin to compound the insulin I'd just shot into him. We had some scary nail-biting nights, but it was all worth it. He's off insulin and back to being a normal cat. He only eats low carb food, but other than that, we saved a furry little life.
That is some serious dedication, right there.

Well, I've emailed the tattoo artist doing my koi on the 26th and said I've decided that I am keen to try his suggestion of doing it in one session. He thinks it will take about 6 hours, and there's the added financial incentive that there is a maximum day fee of NZD$800 (USD$690).
I've only sat for 1 hour before, this will be my first larger tattoo. Hope I'm not biting off more than I can chew! :p

G'day

Kia Ora :p I'll be in Palmy for the convention (hopefully)

My daughter ended up in hospital tonight. Severe asthma exacerbated by a viral cold. She stayed for 6 hours and they let her go home. I felt awful being at work, but my partner said not to come because it was under control and we need the cash. I hate being the parent that works sometimes, though I love my job.

I liked this Princess Mononoke tattoo by Melissa Baker. I've seen a lot of really illustrative Miyazaki tattoos that don't do much for me, so this is a little different.
That is really nice.
-
Rather than rush into it, why don't you take your time and get the rest of the sleeve done at a later date? Your arm will still be there later (hopefully).

"I don't understand why someone would get _______ tattooed on them"
Yes... that's right... you don't.

I was spared so I could clean everything I suppose.
That's the way it goes, isn't it!

Cleaning up kid vomit. My 10 year old is sick, and my two nieces staying with us from Vietnam (3yrs, and 11 months) have just been sick, so there's vomit, vomit, everywhere...
I'm actually looking forward to going to work.

The sock thing makes me think of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers album cover with the willy socks. @Zillah : photo or it didn't happen ;)
Totally! That's what I was thinking of!
Annnnd.... I'd post a photo but I only had one woolly hat
Cultural Appropriation and tattoos

One guy who got crap online was a custom tattoo designer from NZ called Sam Phillips (whose stuff I really like btw): Custom Tattoos - Sam Phillips - Artist . Illustrator . Graphic Designer
http://instagram.com/samphillipsillustration
His response was, "I've never claimed that my 'gypsy' designs are in any way historically accurate. There are many types of 'gypsys' not just Romanian. I use the term 'gypsy' loosely as a nomadic traveler. I'd say my work is more fantasy than anything. There are always going to be people that find offence in art. Art is interpretive."
