Hey, guys. My name is Bonnie and I am from the mississippi gulf coast. I am currently going to school for chemistry. A few years ago I determined that I needed to get some art on my back. After years of deliberating, I've decided on a full japanese style back piece. I'm starting it in a week in Nola! My family thinks I'm crazy for choosing such a large tattoo for my first, but it just feels right. (Don't know how long it will feel right once the needle is going across my skin, haha). Anyways, I came across this site looking for advice and saw that everyone posting seemed really lovely and friendly. I'm looking forward to talking to folks. I'm pretty nervous so advice and words of encouragement are always appreciated!

I've done a search on the net and on here but can't find what I'm looking for. Does anyone know a source to explain the symbolism behind Japanese tattoos? I'm not talking about high level Koi means this, Dragon means this; I'm talking about a really detailed explanation such as an explanation of what the symbolism behind a Samurai holding a scroll in his mouth is, or what it means for a Samurai to be shown killing a Koi fish. I'm thinking about ideas for my next big piece and don't just want to put some random symbols on myself, or if I do, I want to do it by choice, not by ignorance. Thanks.

So I'm originally from Texas currently in Florida, I'm active duty navy going on 7years now. Not an artist just an enthusiast. I have a full sleeve extending to my chest on my left side and a half sleeve on my right soon to be full sleeve. They're Japanese style smoke waves and all. Had them done in Japan by two different artist one of which left a few minor imperfections (no big deal). I'm trying to find a way to do a smooth transition in-order to have multiple styles yet have it all come together nicely. I'm open for any and all suggestions.

Here is some pics of the cover-up I just had done. I don't have a pic of the finished tattoo I will get one taken when my wife gets back. Before Almost done Almost done back view The whole photo set on Flickr I am so glad to have this cover-up done. I didn't care about the spider I got it when I was 16 and was quite used to it... kind of liked it to be honest. I will get another small spider again one day. The dragonflies on the other hand... I REALLY hated them. I went into a street shop one day looking for a band of lizards (which would have still sucked) and ended up with this because I was in a hurry, stupid and did not know any better. To be honest it turned me from tattoo for years. I went in for some script on my wrist and started talking to a real tattooer that I got brave again. The tattoo is done my Alicia E from Trouble Bound Studios in Newfoundland. The reason for a dragon? Well my whole mindset on life changed when I became a dad. I suddenly knew my role had changed to protecter and that is what a dragon is to me. OK enough typing, did I mention I tend to ramble?

how about this contrast? a full sleeve heavy blacked out.. the other (i will have a year or so to plan, save, and research artist) japanese sleeve? murdering out my sleeve feels uplifting and empowering to me on one hand.. but on the other is the fear like, oh what if i get hella bummed off having a black arm (im not a racist).. its also kind of dope to me because you dont see it too often.. it also seems like some shit you could grow old with (my tattoos now- no) and be cool with.. and to not feel like such a derelict; some really sick japanese traditional on the other arm.. to balance things out.. i think itd be a cool contrast.. everyone i talk to doesnt care, they just like the black sleeve idea.. also, how do you know whos right to do the heavy black work? you can contact reputable shops and theyll recommend somebody, saying theyve done this before a few times or whatever.. im worried about scarring and dont want to be lead astray.. lastly, and this may seem dumb.. i also have a lot of time to consider this.. but how the hell do you go about getting a japanese sleeve? sorry if this seems newjack-ish, but i know the elements that go into one.. but whenever i see a really cool one i think that it must be all the artists concept.. like my sleeve now has windbars, koi,. waves, flowers, etc.. but on all out traditional sleeve.. this is probably something you work half and half on with an artist? know that may sound obvious.. again, its also not something im going to jump right into.. im having removal on some medium-ish shit on the arm and will have a year or so to research, appreciate, and think about this.. - - - Updated - - - also, on the heavy black,, on my shoulder there is already some cool windbar shit that caps it off.. i want to leave that.. and maybe connect some of it somehow into a chest peice.. or even a half chest peice.. just trying to get some ideas bouncing around and creative juices flowing here..

Hi Folks, I'm curious about the elements of the traditional Japanese tattoos. I've found a few pieces of information but not very much. Was there a discussion on this form about that topic I might have missed (and someone could point me to?) Or is there a website or book that someone could suggest? I've been looking at some google images of woodblock prints but for this kind of thing (visual images) I usually need written/verbal direction to help me identify elements and patterns. Thanks, Dude

Over the past few months we've had some awesome conversations in the various tattoo forum threads on Japanese tattoo designs/tattooers, Japanese tattoo politics, and much much more around Japanese culture both historical and present day. Plus seen some great tattoo pictures from smaller tattoos to larger Japanese inspired body suits. Through all of this I noticed a thread solely dedicated to Japanese Tattoos was never started so the time has come.... For me I have been watching Stewart Robson's work on his blog as well as some of his work that has been posted on this site for some time now. I love the fact that he does works in progress pictures so as a fan of tattoos you can watch the process unfold on larger japanese tattoos. What stands out to me right now other than the attention to details and dedication by both tattooers and tattoo collectors to invest so much time into the piece but also the limited colors. The use of so much black with only a few colors if any really make a Japanese inspired tattoo standout to me. For one of the pictures below by Stewart I mentioned this I think in the Full Back Piece Thread is the carp on the upper right leg....so sick! From the tail to the face, the shading and colors matching how you'd potentially see one in a koi pond. I have more tattooers whose Japanese tattoos I follow regularly but will start there. Look forward to hearing everyone else's stories/opinions and seeing your pictures. I have just finished my Koi fish and want to keep going up my arm. I have a few things that are semi small tattoos on a few spots up my arm already. I want to try and keep it as much of a Japanese theme as I honestly can. I wanted ideas of Japanese things that aren't common, I have already the koi so I figured I want to get some things that are not common japenese tattoos to add to my future sleeve. Let me know your ideas, thanks!

I am moving to Toronto next year, and want to begin a full body Japanese suit. Could anybody recommend me artists in Canada/the U.S. who tattoo traditionally? I am very willing/eager to travel, and expense is not an issue, I am after quality work. I have done some research but would like another's opinion, thank you!

Well, my artist and I have been talking about a sleeve for a while and I know that'll be my next endeavour, most likely with a chest panel. I've been trying to figure out some sort of idea he can work with (I find it easier to just give an idea and see what he comes up with. That's how the squidpant happened). At first, I kept thinking that I love Japanese stuff, but that "everyone has big traditional Japanese pieces". On the other hand, they are popular for a reason...there is something to be said for tradition (and my artist does amazing tigers). My squidpant (can you singularize squidpants?) is all Egyptian stuff, and I'm of Egyptian origin, so that's a no-brainer. I feel a little like doing a big Japanese piece would be like "stealing" a little from this culture, of which I am not part. The other side of that coin is that Japanese art is a huge part of tattoo culture (if you can call it that, and I do believe there is such a thing)... I have a piece on my chest that is influenced from Norse mythology, and I was worried about offending people of Norse heritage, but it's far enough removed from the inspiration that I actually have to tell the story about it... I don't know if I'm making sense here. Am I the only one who gets these feelings? Is traditional Japanese such an integral part of tattooing now that it is considered an implicit part of tattooing?

So after reading Iwars' San Fran travel blog, I'd made a comment a long the lines of "maybe I'll do the same for my next Japan trip..." I'm pretty sure the response from @Iwar was "you better blog the shit out of it". So, for Iwar & the rest of the LST crew, here is a blog/travel log of my last trip to Japan, in December 2011 to complete my sleeve by Horinao at The Cat Claw Tattoo-Z in Kyoto. And to catch up with my Japanese fam ;) (This is my first blog type thing ever so my apologies ahead of time if I waffle on or if it's boring as shit lol. You have been warned :) ) For those of you who just tuned in, I'll do a really quick (ok, not so quick) update to get y'all up to speed on where we are at :cool: In June last year (2011) I'd gone to Japan to visit and stay with friends in Osaka, and to do a few more things I wasn't able to do on my first trip the previous year (October 2010). Probably the number 1 item on my list was to get a tattoo while I was in Japan (I really love Japanese tattoos, so why wouldn't I want to get one in Japan?). I knew what shop I wanted to go to and who I wanted to get something from, so before I'd left I'd sent off a couple of emails to Catclaw trying to figure out if I could get a booking and when. Unfortunately, I never received a reply... but that wasn't going to deter me ;) Yosuke (My japanese friend who I knew from Australia and who was helping as my translator and local ye olde inn keeper) and myself set out to find the Catclaw and see what we could make happen... When we've walked in to the shop, Horinao was at his station painting and Hiro was working diligently on, funnily enough, another Australian. Speaking to Rina (pronounced 'Lina') the shop manager and Horinao via Yosuke (and my bad Japanese lol) we decided on a Hannya. Horinao asked what colour I wanted, and my reply was "Aka" (red) making a real emphasis with my body language to say "I wanted this baby really really red" (For those playing at home different colours represent different stages of transformation and different standings in society) Horinao got this cheeky little smile, nodded and knew exactly what I meant. And from pretty much from that point we where total BFF's... lmao. Rina said to come back in an hour and we could start, so Yosuke and I went and grabbed some food and headed back when it was time. 2 1/2 hours (maybe 3 including a break) I walked out with this: I was pretty damn happy to say the least, and at that point knew that I wanted him to finish the sleeve... IF it could be finished due to needing a cover up that wasn't going to be that easy. Well, there was that and the fact that I'd need to somehow figure out how to get back to japan for this to happen ;) I get back home and about 4 days later, without going into to much detail, I get some bad news from my Mum but with this news also comes some money and I can only think of one thing I really want to spend it on. I even jokingly said to Mum "You know what this is going on don't you?" and in typical Mumsie style, she responds with "Yeah, I kind of thought that. Just let me know when you book your flights" and that was that... The next piece of luck was that Jetstar where having another sale to Japan! It's the only way I've been able to go as often as I have - I've never paid anymore than $450 return ;) thank you Jetstar. So I emailed the guys and asked if Horinao thought the tattoo I wanted covered could be... This is what I wanted covered: Yes, it's Venom from Marvel Comics' Spiderman series. I'd gotten it when I was 19 I think if memory serves correct? It had a lot of black in it, as well as a nice assortment of colours, so I wasn't sure what could be done. Laser was an option of course, but I figured i may as well just spend that money on the tattoo. Horinao said it'd be all good and asked what I wanted. Although I'd never wanted a Dragon or a Koi as such, I also knew they where probably my only two options. Horinao agreed, and said that a Koi would work best and so thats what we agreed upon. I booked my flights for the end of August, booked 2 days in and after that trip I was left with this: August 2011 Day 1 (A little over 6 hours not including breaks): August 2011 Day 2 (4 hours not including breaks - Horinao had a gig that night lol) He drew everything directly on to my skin to make sure it all worked and flowed as well as possible. I have to admit I was in awe just watching him sketch onto my arm. I couldn't make out shit, but knew I was in safe hands ;) He also never shaved my arm (except for the first time with the Hannya) which I found on later isn't super necessary unless your quite hairy, and it helps lesson the itching during healing :) (hairs aren't growing back) I got back, twiddled my thumbs until Jetstar had another sale and the second they did, I booked my tickets back for December... Well, that pretty much brings everyone up to speed with where I was at before I left in December last year. I'll make this the first post, and do the next few as individual days me thinks? Do yourself a favor and follow this blog: TRUE NATURE TATTOO Brian Kaneko tattoos out of True Nature, a private studio in Arcata, but I met him (briefly) at Diamond Club. I can't claim to know him at all, but the few times I've met him, he's been really nice and very humble. He's an old friend of Bill and Junii Salmon's and, like Bill & Junii, adheres to the Horitoshi style of tattooing: BLACK backgrounds, white-tipped peonies, and...well, you know it when you see it. On his blog, he's documenting a full suit he started on a client who had no other tattoos. It's really great to watch it start to come together.

I'm looking for some inspiration for Japanese-style foot tattoos, ideally with plenty of foot coverage but without being something that really should be bigger, if that makes sense? ie I'm not wanting to squeeze a dragon on there or something. Coverage like this, but other subject ideas and example pics would be appreciated.

I was checking out some websites from tattooers in New Jersey,and came across two tattooers who are doing tebori.It just seems odd that a white dude who isn't even an accomplished tattooer,is also doing tebori.I could see someone like Chris Trevino,or Mike Rubendall,who are excellent tattooers,and who have been doing japanese work for many years learning how to do tebori.It seems like their trying to get business by offering tebori,because their machine work isn't that great. -
So I have been reading all the threads I can find and still need some help. I am trying to plan half a body suit, elbow to knee on my right side. I have my half sleeve and chest done now and ribs are next, I think? So my first problem is this, I want to collect from a few different tattooers but I want everything 'tied in' do you all think this will be an issue? Second is the planning part... where the hell do I start? I don't mean the design of the tattoo but I guess the placement of the entire thing. I see a few different sections, I want two tigers on my ribs. I think there should be enough room for that. Something else on my front hip area, like a Hannya mask or something. Something else on my ass and hip area, I don't know what then either one big design on my leg or maybe two, front and back Which leaves my back open and maybe the upper part of my shoulder, which I was going to get a Koi on this summer. Does this sound reasonable, insane or something? Is this something that I can figure out on this forum, I know it's probable a lot to ask, or should I stick to individual consultations? Thanks for reading this long post :)

While watching the excellent Freedy Corbin tattoo in blog, my ears perked up when he started talking about his tattooed nun from Don Ed Hardy. I really like this design concept. My first exposure to it was in old Japanese woodcut prints of tattooed samurai from the Shinpen Suikogaiden I've seen Westernized versions ranging from the Greg Irons Edith Burchett tattoo: to cholo updates like this banger from Nico Acosta at Better Days in Santiago Chile: and this awesome Red Hot from Eric Gregory at Little Vinnie's Tattoos in Baltimore, MD: Anybody else dig this?

Hey whats good all trying to get some insight on what artists would be great in the state of NJ to do Japanese scale work on my arms I have lot's of covering up to do also I tried getting in contact with Chris Adamek but he never returns my emails. Do you guys think Matt Lukesh would be a good artist? Any recommendation would be thankful.

Wanted to share my torso piece, I don't have a pic right now of it finished, but this session was the 2nd to last before we did everything else. This was done by Nick Ley, and we plan on doing background on my ribs and fill up toward my shoulders in 2 months. We started this piece back in 2007, finished it 2010.
