We have a pretty organized cancellation list at the shop. We don't have tens upon hundreds of walk-ins in a day, 2 at best, and everything else is on appointment; therefore, the cancellation list was built out of necessity to keep people working and on their toes when a no-show or cancellation pops up. Not to mention that people hate waiting for appointments and so to make up for that we are always calling people to fill in spots and avoid appointments like that where necessary. The problem is that it's become almost useless: We statistically can call every person on that list and offer spots - and of course to those people who said they'd drop anything to come in - and they're NEVER available. It becomes a waste of money having my counter staff calling around to hear people incredulously tell them they have to work - as though we are insane for even suggesting they might want this last minute opportunity. Is this the same everywhere? I'm curious if we are just on a year long run of sketch bags!!!!

The midwest definitely does not get enough love on this board, most really stunning tattooers set up shop on the coasts and for obvious reasons. So, this is the thread to talk about the men and women who don't get enough praise and/or recognition! Who do you like in the Midwest? I know there are good tattooers everywhere but they're a little harder to find around here it seems...

Couldn't find a thread that quite fit this topic so thought I would throw it up here for discussion... My last couple of experiences have been with walk-in-loving street shops that employ several great artists. At each shop, I've gone in with the hope of being tattooed by a particular artist, but I've ended up being tattooed by someone different than I had originally gone into the shop to see. In both instances, I went to the shop and looked through the flash while trying to get a "feel" for the shop and looking at portfolios and seeing who I think might be most adept at doing the sort of tattoo I want. While there, I witnessed these two artists (both at different shops, mind you) acting like complete jackasses and generally giving me a really uncool vibe. I ended up going with a different artist, in each case a highly competent and great tattooer but one whose portfolio and style I liked ever so slightly less just because I didn't want to get a (maybe) slightly better tattoo but have a bad experience that I will remember that tattoo by. Thus, do you think personality of a tattooer matters? If someone has a reputation as an impeccable artist but a total asshole (not just "gruff" or whatever, like that story about Scott going to Bob Roberts' shop and being bounced right the fuck out, but just an overall douche) would you want work done by them? If you're straight edge would you get tattooed by a great artist who also happens to be a drunk or drug user (not sure how often these categories overlap, but, hey!)? Does the final product outweigh the experience of getting the tattoo put on? Any other factors you consider outside of the finished product when choosing a tattooer? -
No names need be said to prevent people catching feelings. But most likely any shops or owners mentioned here would not be enlightened enough to know what the words forum or thread are. Having worked in nothing but street shops, I have seen/worked around plenty of gnarly shit. But none takes the cake of the first shop I worked at. In 99 I got my first job in an armpit of a shop, working the counter for tips and shop experience. I was stoked to have my first foot in the door. This was at a place in College Park MD, right near DC. Owned by a biker whom we will call Sonny, who thankfully was never there. With no exaggeration, he was never out of jail for more than 4 days at a time. Seriously, that was the record while I was there. We had a betting pool each time he was out. We had wall-to-wall carpet evrywhere, including the bathroom, which was also where the handwashing sink was also dirty sink/tubescrubbing sink. Basically walking through the lobby & down the hall with dirty tubes everyday. The tattoo area had years of inkspots decorating the carpet. On the rare occasions when Sonny would be out of jail, he would sometimes come in at after we all left to tattoo friends. The aftermath of this would be coming in the next day to find a dirty setup on someone's station (using all that persons equip), and for some reason he would leave used needles in the top drawer of your station instead of a sharps. One of the best/worst examples was coming to find that he had used someone's ink & had apparently lost the cap; so plugged the bottle by sticking a used bar into it, needle & all. On the days when he was out during the daytime, he would usually come in, take ALL the cash out the till (leaving nothing for change) and hopefully leave ASAP. If he was in jail, he would have his gf/exwife's sister come in randomly clear out every dime, even if bills were overdue & utilies about to get shut off. There were occasions where we had to hide paperwork from him to squirrel the money away to pay the bills to keep the shop open and running. Sadly enough, He was actually better off in jail, where he was in a structured enviroment. With no access to alcohol, which was always related to every arrest, he stayed out of trouble for the most part. Him being locked up actually kept the shop in a somewhat more stable enviroment. We all flew the coop eventually and from what I heard, there was a 'mysterious fire' that most likely happened after he made his insurance was paid up.

I'm in Boston for work for the next 2-3 weeks and was wondering if there was anywhere/anyone in particular worth seeking out to get tattooed by while I'm here? I just got tattooed by Steve Boltz twice, Eli Quinters, and Bailey Hunter Robinson while I was in Brooklyn for work as well this past month and I'm hoping to keep the streak alive! :)

I will be taking a trip to Charlottesville, Virginia at the end of next month. So far I have seen Jinx Proof in D.C. and Super Hands and Hold it Down in Richmond. Are there any shops that I am missing that are in the area? American traditional only, por fa. Also, any LSTers live near Charlottesville?

So over the past few weeks I've had some conversations outside this forum with people on tattoo coverups and seem to be seeing more than the normal amount for me. I've taken some of the tips from this thread in LST tattoo forum Tattoo Cover up or removal and shared it with the individuals. But have had some observations lead to assumptions that I want to turn to hypothesis by asking on this tattoo forum that I thought could be fun and intriguing. One of my friends was edge at a very young age as she grew up around lots of east coast edge kids that were also family members then broke it a few months after she turned twenty-one. During here teen years see accumulated four different straight edge tattoos. She has been in the process of covering them up for some years now but the one that really catches my eye is this large belly rocker of the three X's covered up by big roses. I understand three large X's in black ink are going to be difficult to cover and the tattooer did a good job except if you look closely then you can totally see them. So my first questions based off of some years observations and now reflections not only with this individual but others are: -Are roses and panthers the most common "objects" used to cover-up tattoos? -What other ones are common "goto" tattoos for tattoo coverups? Onto the other part....so another one of my friends has this tattoo outlined on her back that she refuses to let people see so much that when she's at the beach or other warmer climates she opts to wear a "tank-kini" rather than a bikini as she dislikes the tattoo that much. It is just an outline and spans about three quarters of her back in more of a "frame" manner and not so much the center and wants to do a tattoo cover-up. She has been considering the laser then coverup route and if she was in DC I'd send her to Karl Hedgepath at Jinxproof for laser and coverup but she is in the Bay Area. So the next set of questions: -Bay Area good tattoo laser removal businesses? -Bay Area good tattoo coverup tattooers? -Also to make this more informative for other locations...Who in you opinion does the best tattoo coverup? If you answer this please list the tattooers name, shop, and location (if you know all that info). Of course if you have before and after photos share them!! Thanks and let the schooling begin.........

A thought which I often think about then over the past twenty-fours hours have been really thinking about due to Tattoo Dex and her viral video of the 152 facebook friend tattoo sleeve is tattooers with little to no tattoos. I think this is a heavy weight for me on whether or not I would get tattooed by someone. I'm not saying they need to have hands, fingers, neck, face, head, etc but at least some good visible tattoos for me to know they get it. Or I don't know if "get it" is the right word but they have taken the time to get good tattoos and can do good tattoos. They have done and are doing their time It is like many of the tattooers on here have said over and over again to those interested in getting into tattooing "get tattooed by good tattooers". Plus the million other suggestions and deterrents they have said but anywho.......Would you get or have you been tattooed by a tattooer with little to no tattoos? Thoughts? Experiences? Who are some good tattooers in Vancouver? I know about Matt Houston at Gastown. But, other than that, I don't really know of any other good tattooers from that city.

Just got an email from a guy with no tattoos who does not tattoo, we'll call him Old Man River, saying "Hey, opening a tattoo shop/art gallery with some friends and business partners," asking me if I knew anyone who wanted to work there. Without typing a laundry list of everything wrong with this picture (which I just did and then deleted after I thought better of it), what's the general feeling here? My response to him was short but polite. I'm not a tattooer myself but I really wanted to fly off the handle a bit... and its not even my place to. I know there are a few non-tattooers who have done this very successfully but it's rare. I wouldn't decide to go open a shoe store or a tire factory -- how could I justify it when I know nothing about those industries -- so why do people think they can open a shop/GALLERY and somehow become respected and successful in the tattoo community?

Happy 4th y'all...today I decided to take out the bike out for afternoon ride...and saw that a local tattoo shop was open...i stopped by the other evening and saw that they were looking for an artist and a piercer...so tonight i decided to roll on up and check out this local shop...they happened to be having a july 4th barb-q in the works...so fun and festivities were in the works...I walked in and asked if i could check out the shop and look at their books...the woman was polite and said yes...but i could tell i was getting a lil mean mugging thrown my way...its all good...she asked questions and i broke down my lil back story...she went with the usual your really need to be working out of a shop...no argument on my part...after i looked through the books i said i would love to come back and maybe get some work done...and said i planned on getting work from a number of people and said it gives me a chance to learn...then all of sudden she flipped on me and said there is no way i would ever tattoo you if your trying to learn something from me...knowing that now she said i wouldn't ever tattoo you...wow that is oddest customer service response...I smiled and said that is fine...no worries I'll get it from someone else...then she slammed me and said i knew you were some home scratcher the moment you pulled up...what gave it away?...silly woman i learned everything I needed to know in that short visit and I learned that there is nothing left to learn from that shop...c'est la vie... -
So I have only been out of apprentice status for just under two years. I knew eventually I would come across this situation but my solution did not play out as I thought it would. So this dude comes in the shop covered in prison tattoos, for the most part they were actually done well. So we get to talking and he said his reason for coming in is to have some things redone, just gone over he says "brighten them up" I believe is the term he used. So I ask to see what he wants done. The first one is an old Cleveland radio station logo, the other is an iron cross with a giant blazing red swastika in the center. Now our shop is in the hood, so it took balls for him to even walk in there. My solution for this problem in my head was to quote a high price in hopes they would walk away. If it is not already apparent, I don't want to do this tattoo, strictly based on the content, and a promise I made to my self to never do anything overtly hateful that may have a negative impact on the client or others they may see it. So my query is if I refuse to do it I am refusing to do my job, which he is allowed to be mad at me about because I am condemning him for his beliefs. I am not there to judge I am there to provide tattoos. O, I forgot to mention, he accepted the price on the count that the shop he was at just before quoted him even higher than I did and said he would come and see me Saturday. That's today, shit.

Any suggestions where to take this? I was just going to do this with a super simple color scheme. Brown, red, light and navy blue, green, yellow. still have shading left too... he didnt want to work on the lower shit after the outline.

Just had a question if he was a fast tattooer or not for those who have been tattooed by him? Thanks to @ avery for the heads up. Google mapped the shop and it's only 5 hrs tops from my place. Will be a sick graduation gift to myself in june

what's everyone's opinion on this? i know there are some artists out there that feel that if one artist bases their design off of another artist's work, that is stealing. however, almost every artists incorporates the use of designs that have been used for many, many years. what's the difference to you (if there is one)? since i'm not an artist, only a client, i'm just curious to hear what everyone thinks.

Hello, One of the first series of videos I saw, in fact, the series of videos that lead me here were posted by Jeff Gogue from his guest spot at Yellow Blaze in Yokohama a while back. Has some cool tattoos (skulls, Venetian Mask, etc.) by Jeff, a close look at some of Shige's clients full body tattoos, specifically on Tomo (apprentice) and Juichimen Kannon (client), and start of Jeff Gogue's backpiece by Shige. I personally was taken aback at seeing those two tattoos 'LIVE' rather the just photographed, but I'm a newbie. So as I was walking along Venice Beach today, I saw tons of tourists entering a myriad of tattoo/piercing shops. Seeing as most of the tourists were absolute 'tards, I can only imagine what kind of "fun" those artists deal with on a regular basis. Anyways, what's your worst walk-in story? Whether it was an abnormally absurd request or an out of his/her mind customer tell your story here!

I am moving to Toronto next year, and want to begin a full body Japanese suit. Could anybody recommend me artists in Canada/the U.S. who tattoo traditionally? I am very willing/eager to travel, and expense is not an issue, I am after quality work. I have done some research but would like another's opinion, thank you!
