  2. My name is Ben Grillo. I tattoo in San Diego at Two Roses Tattoo. Over and out.
  3. one of the guys i work with recently showed me this business card collection of his of tattooers he knows or worked with. thought this was a cool idea. do anyone of you do this?
  4. This is something that I've always had a dilemma with. So here is the question, we all started off somewhere and usually not knowing very much about tattoos or what makes a proper tattoo or searched for artists based on a particular style. So what was it about someone's portfolio that made you want to get tattooed by them? Was it originality? Was it the efficiency of the work and by that I mean solid clean lines, smooth shading, great healed products, or was it just the "cool" factor of your friends getting tattooed there first and recommending that said artist to you? I'm saying this because I'm at a loss for the direction I want my work to go. I'm in a small town with an overabundance of awful tattoo artists who boast "custom" and "amazing" work but it's all shit. Usually I just do butterflies, tribal, and gnarly new skool pieces all day long but my portfolio is filled with only traditional style tattoos and portraits. Most of these being on my closest friends. So with that being said I want to keep the customer and collector in mind for once and not peers. What is it that you would rather see? A wide variety? Or just the style I prefer the most? This question can apply to anyone its just a thought I've been having.
  5. I know that there is Tattoo artists and collectors here. I just wondering what your thoughts are on the Tattoo artists that sign their work. Good idea, bad idea, or do you care either way? I've been surfing on the web and have seen some tattoos with what appears to be a signature along with it. I personally do not think that its a good idea. You went to an artist that you choose and you know who it was, if they have a unique style everyone will know who did the tattoo. That alone should be the signature.
  6. ill be tattooing at dolorosa tattoo co. in studio city CA from feb 12th to the 16th. to make an appointment i can be reached at [email protected]
  7. The first post should be introduce myself I suppose. Name is John Bentrup, live and tattoo in Shreveport/Bossier City, Louisiana. It's not real Louisiana, armpit of Texas and Arkansas. Newer than most people on here that tattoo I'm sure. Super stoked on this website, especially the interviews I've seen so far and I'm sure there are more here to find and can't wait for any newer ones. Thank you starting this thing up for sure!
  8. Do yourself a favor and follow this blog: TRUE NATURE TATTOO Brian Kaneko tattoos out of True Nature, a private studio in Arcata, but I met him (briefly) at Diamond Club. I can't claim to know him at all, but the few times I've met him, he's been really nice and very humble. He's an old friend of Bill and Junii Salmon's and, like Bill & Junii, adheres to the Horitoshi style of tattooing: BLACK backgrounds, white-tipped peonies, and...well, you know it when you see it. On his blog, he's documenting a full suit he started on a client who had no other tattoos. It's really great to watch it start to come together.
  9. so today i am finding myself putting together a book of reference, mostly vintage girl faces i've collected from good old google and friends emailing me cool images. I'm using blurb to put them altogether. thomas hooper used this website to print his skulls book and both me and my other half realised how much cheaper and organized it is to use blurb to compile reference. before id spend good money on printing out photos, binding them and somehow always loose a few along the way, this took a lot of my time obviously! so what im asking is here is what do other tattooers do to compile random pieces of reference they find along the way? i mean my bookcases are bursting with books of course but you know when you find a cool pic and promise yourself to use it next time something similar needs drawing up, and you forget, and even if you remember, its a task to find where you last put it!
  10. So in response to recent inquiries about Chicago and its place in tattoo history and to try to up the ante here at The Last Sparrow Tattoo Forum I will try to breakdown what I know and have acquired about tattooing in Chicago from early on up until present day. All of this will revolve around the history of Chicago Tattoo because honestly I don’t know or care to know about any other present day shops in the city. This of course will give a broad range of information at first because most of the photographic history was lost to the trash or to the flea markets at the time. The stories of South State Street are very few, 99% of the tattooers that dominated that street in its hey day are long gone. There are a few still left and their stories are amazing, some look upon those times fondly as the last truly honky tonk time in tattooing other look upon South State as Chicago’s tattoo demise. The 4-block area of South State Street in Chicago from the early 1900s to the mid 1960s was considered the worst red-light district that ever existed in this country to date. It consisted of skid row flophouses, porn theatres, liquor stores, wino bars, shooting galleries, arcades, and of course in every corner of every arcade were the tattoo shops. Chicago was supposedly home to hundreds of tattooers through out the early years. All making tattoos cutting their chops and making their bones on the abundance of fresh sailors from Great Lakes Naval Base just north of Chicago, and the working class folks looking to let loose on South State Street. These first photos show the very early days of south state notice in one of the photos the Armed Services recruiting center, this later became and Army Navy Surplus store. This is one of the main reason I believe that attracted the tattooers to South State they had a fresh abundance of young men signing up to serve their country and at that time service men especially sailors and tattoos went hand in hand. These other three photos show the burlesque barkers looking to get customers in to see the show Thanks for your interest, more to come later
  11. hello everyone. my name is jen. i've been tattooing for about 11 years (3+ in NYC/NJ & 7 in FL) and just moved to the netherlands 5 months ago. i currently work at classic ink and mods in amsterdam. i haven't been on a tattoo forum in about 4 years, but prior to that i was both a moderator & active participant in several tattoo forums. i just saw a post on scott sylvia's facebook page regarding this forum, so i decided to check it out. i like what i've seen so far, and hope to be able to participate here on a regular basis. i'm looking forward to getting to know those of you i haven't interacted with before, as much as i'm looking forward to reconnecting with some old friends. <3
  12. You have to be good, 5 years minimum. Downtown location. Great shop with bright future looking to add its 4th permanent artist. Please email [email protected] if you are interested.

    Greetings

Hello All, I'm Sara Purr and I tattoo at Kamikaze in Rochester, NY. Cool site so far!
  14. Hi guys. My name is Brian Harris. I am active duty by day and tattoo at Ink Addiction Tattoo Studio at night. My friend Tokyo Hiro sent me to the site, look forward to talking to you guys!
  15. Hey all, This is my first post here. I think this is the appropriate spot. I'm looking to start a quarter sleeve! I want to get japanese style waves with a kraken wrecking a Japanese junk ship.I'm hoping for it to start on my chest and reach up and around my shoulder. I live in CT and am looking for an artist to do this, right now I'm looking into Julio Rodriguez at hope gallery.... heres a link to some of his work. Hope Gallery Tattoo : Julio Rodriguez : Tattoos : Page 3 What do you guys think of his work? also any other artist suggestions? -Thanks in advance Maxx
  16. hello all, i'm sarah schor. i tattoo at new york adorned and have been here since august. i was previously working in the UK.
  17. Hi - im new here, but i figured as i was going to make this thread there wasnt much point in making another to introduce myself. Im 18, and just moved to a new country (huge change in my short life) and away from my parents, who have been my biggest supporters in everything ive ever done, and have always been there for me, so i thought i might get a tattoo to remember them. As i said in the title this will be my first real tattoo, i was pretty stupid and got a tattoo from a homemade gun a while ago, came out terribly but ill get it fixed eventually (i know, im an idiot, try not to make fun of me for that) anyway this is a really rough sketch i did, im absolutely un-artistic, so dont laugh, its just a basic idea. I want the ying yang part because my parents are polar opposits, but they work so well together, and 20+ years on i think they're still in love. The koi fish was just a way to represent each of them, one fish is going to be a more masculine blue, while the other is a more femanine orange or something along those lines. Hopefully ill find a good artist to take my idea and make an amazing peice of art out of it, and make it into a half sleeve. So what do you think? Good idea, bad idea? Think it will make a good tattoo? Thanks for your opinions. Uploaded with ImageShack.us
  18. I saw this upcoming 2011 SLC International Tattoo Convention February 18-20, 2001 website after twittering with @dansmithunknown when he posted his new painting for the Tarot Card Art Show. Below in "quotes" is the list of tattooers and tattoo shops from the site where I see many LSTers! We look forward to hearing about the show and seeing some pictures and maybe even some blogs anyone? Is anyone else planning on attending? Will there be a rematch by Nick Colella against Scott Sylvia for arm wrestling? Or another challenger?
  19. From February 11-13, 2011 the Milano Tattoo convention will be held so..... -Who's going? -Who's going to get tattooed? By who? -Who's going to tattoo? If you are tattooing, how can people make appointments with you? -If you are traveling there to tattoo, will you be guest tattooing anywhere before and/or after? If so, where and how can people make appointments? -Who's going to have a table? -Anyone wish to document it for Last Sparrow Tattoo Forum and write some blogs with pictures? Maybe even some video? -And anything else you wish to share about the upcoming event please feel free to contribute........ Thanks!
  20. There's all kinds of stuff on here about the worst tattoos you've seen and pain in the ass clients, but what about the ones you love? For those of you who watched Nick Colella's interview, you'll remember him talking about a client who got his first tattoo with Nick. After that they've attended each others weddings and become close. It made me feel really good, because we so often forget about the awesome people we meet in the wake of the psycho drunk assholes that affect our day so much more strongly. So let's chat about some of the awesome people who you look forward to seeing in your tattoo shops. Ps this post is also partially inspired by an awesome repeat customer of mine named Alanna who posts on LST regularly and has taken a truly responsible interest in good tattooing and traveling to indulge her new hobby. She also brings us cookies and is also always an uplifting presence in the shop. We need to celebrate radical dudes like her who got into tattooing post tv show, but have a pre-tv show reverence for the trade.
  21. hey dudes. whats up Scott? (hey, im back from overseas. gimme a shout) Mario- you are the greatest. xoxo <3 - seth
  22. I'm pretty sure that the WTF section of the forum is the best place to post this. Here's a link to some of his work, in the off chance that some jackass tries to get a job somewhere using Juan's portfolio. Juan Puente: Tattoos
  23. Tonight I was looking around the various pages/links we have under the LST Preferred Tattoo Professionals and enjoyed them all as I always try to visit these various pages to see what's going down around the world regularly. But the one I must share tonight is Luke Wessman's who is always doing awesome tattoos but also maybe because I am getting ready to head south for sometime and am dreaming of better days with money to get tattooed but stuck looking at pictures because if I had the paper I would be getting tattooed by him while down there! Below are two recent pictures he posted plus I found this little bit he wrote on Scott so it became even more relevant for the site. Any LSTers have any of his tattoos and pictures? Hope you enjoy not only the below but his site and tattoos as much as I often do....
  24. Hi, name's Dominic and i'm from Singapore. Been lurking on this site for awhile now. I lurk on other tattoo forums as well, this one seems to be my favorite though. I have two tattoos currently in b/w. The word family across my chest and a day of the dead girl on sternum down to my diaphragm. Unfortunately, the words across my chest was not done as well as it should've however i've learned my mistake and i've been going to a different artist. I will be starting my sleeve end of this month, will hopefully post up pictures along the way and share my experience, though most of you are already heavily tattooed. Here's the link of the artist who is going to do my sleeve if any of you are interested. thINK Tattoo
  25. I posted this on another site but thought I'd ask here, also. I'm looking for opinions on which artist (or both) would be better suited to do an owl tattoo for me in a similar style to the tattoo picture I've attached below. I'm including the tattoo pic mainly for style reference and also including links to the two artist's (Oleg, Bez) galleries. Thanks for your time. ( I really love this style of exaggerated realism with color) Oleg's portfolio: Oleg Turyanskiy : Tattoos : Page 1 Bez's portfolio: Tattoos - Bez - Heart Tattoo So, I want a realistic owl similar in style and color to the tattoo picture above and wondering if either Oleg or Bez would be better suited or if it really matters. They are obviously both amazing artists but with different styles and I'm not sure if it would really matter which one I should pursue. Both artists have expressed interest in doing the piece next fall, one at a convention and the other at a shop guest spot. Thoughts, please?
