Heading to Oakland, California to see Freddy Corbin at Temple tattoo to get inked for our 25th wedding anniversary. Appointment is noon, Tuesday. Daniel Higgs did the original wedding tattoos at Realistic Studio in San Francisco and Freddy was in the shop watching and making comments while he was doing us. Daniel doesn't do tattoos any more. So our first choice is Freddy to keep spiritual continuity. The wife and me are getting a "25-XXV added somewhere . I am also getting a "Dragon" mixed into it... I'll keep you up to date.

Hello! So this is my second intro post, but ive taken my original idea and reworked it, Just would like some feedback. Basically, the body drawings are rough sketches, of course the feathers would be done better and the little girl would look more like the one in the pic with the long quote. The quote ive shortened to "happiness is not the absence of struggle". There's a ton of meaning behind every inch of this design and I could explain it, but really im just looking for feedback on the tattoo aesthetically. Im planning on keeping it all black ink, but if you think colour would look nice somewhere, let me know! This will be my first tattoo so all the feedback is appreciated greatly. Keep in mind these are rough sketches and my artist (who I met today!! :D ) will be drawing it out more nicely. Im likely going to have to break it up into pieces and do it over the course of the year because of cost, opposed to squeezing it into a month or two. As far as pricing goes, what do you guys think? I just want to get a few more quotes before I commit to this shop. Thanks a million! cant get photos to upload on post.. check out my gallery :)

hi all this is my introduction thread. im a huge enthusiast in tattoos and i love american traditional style hence the name. im going to school to major in art education but i all types of art. the reason i titled this thread trad. flash help is because i drew an american traditional design and would like some input on it. i had planned to get it on my left leg but placement is still up in the air and i dont know if i should keep all of the elements. i also want to get a homeward bound ship on the same leg in the future so i need to plan around that. constructive criticism is greatly appreciated. thanks in advance guys

I've done a search on the net and on here but can't find what I'm looking for. Does anyone know a source to explain the symbolism behind Japanese tattoos? I'm not talking about high level Koi means this, Dragon means this; I'm talking about a really detailed explanation such as an explanation of what the symbolism behind a Samurai holding a scroll in his mouth is, or what it means for a Samurai to be shown killing a Koi fish. I'm thinking about ideas for my next big piece and don't just want to put some random symbols on myself, or if I do, I want to do it by choice, not by ignorance. Thanks.

I don't know about you guys, but I sometimes struggle to find a Christian themed tattoo that really excites me, and I'm a bona fide Jesus freak. Don't get me wrong, Rock of Ages is cool and all, but other than that crosses and praying hands don't really excite me. Do you guys have or know of any cool Christian Themed tattoos?

Haven't been around for a while as I don't have regular Internet access, but I had a quick question... I've heard and read tons of info on tattooing over scars, and the results of. My question is sort of the opposite. I'm hoping to do a full chest piece over the next month or two, and I'm quite excited for it. My only concern is that at some point in the next 5 years or so, I will be having heart surgery, replacing the valves due to a lifelong condition. When they do the surgery, chances are (as I understand it) very low that it will be an open heart surgery similar to the one I had as a child, but if that did happen what effect would it have on the tattoo? I realize it will mess it up considerably, but does anyone know if it would leave fresh, skin toned scar tissue that could eventually be touched up, or will it just be a jumbled mess of ink? Does anyone have experience with scarring over tattoos, either by surgery or accident or anything? I've never heard anything about it, but I'm certainly not the most educated tattoo wise, being from a small redneck town... I realize the best possible idea would be to wait until after the surgery, but the chances of having open heart as opposed to the surgery done by camera (laparoscopic?) is very low, and I'm mostly just asking out of curiosity rather than concern... Thanks for any and all input/advice

I'm really diggin' this design (attached), especially in this spot. Hard to describe. Not exactly the inner bicep or the outer bicep so I'll just call it the "front bicep." Basically it would be visible best when facing me. I've seen this placement on a few people. What do you guys think about the piece and the placement? Pros and cons?

So - here's my dilemma. My goal is "squid pants". And I honestly don't really care much what all goes into them. I have a (short) list of things that I don't want... but otherwise I care more about just having good looking work on me. I want "fancy" legs. That's it. So how do I convey this to potential tattooers without sounding like a total flake? I worry that if I say "I don't care, do whatever you want, except for "x" things" they'll brush me off as someone who is in it just for some kind of status thing or something... which isn't the case at all. It's VERY personal to me. It's just that I'm not attached to any specific imagery. I don't want to "overshare" with my tale of woe about why exactly I need fancy legs... but I don't want to get written off either... Any advice?

at fade fast. my arm is super swollen. and not like painful-because-of-bruising swollen. but more like lymphadema elephant man swollen. it doesnt hurt at all, but it sucks. is this normal? any advice on how to handle this? about the treatment- its NOT painful. uncomfertable- yes. in fact the only time it hurt was when i was thinkng about what its comparable too. my experience was more like tiny pin pricks and stinging. there were some foot wagging and teeth grinding moments, but never was i ready to take a break or praying for it to be over with. there is no way to say it hurts more or less than getting a tattoo, because theyre two different feelings- apples and oranges. off the bat, all of my shading as knocked out and some black areas were gone or very faded. it also stings like a sunburn an hour or two after treatment. again, nothing bad. my arm is full of huge blisters now also. they do not hurt, just look gnarley. i was scared as hell going into this, nobody should be. its seriously not that bad or as crazy as it looks.. - - - Updated - - - which also makes me think, everything ive read or seen- the prices people are charged, the agony people are put through, and especially the results people are getting, it is VERY important to travel to see somebody with a rep in the tattoo community to get this done.

Here I go, probably freaking out over some thing that just needs more healing time. My tattoo is now on its 5th day of healing, and doing really well! My left rose is almost completely peeled and hasn't been swollen or red for a few days. However, on the right rose, its mostly peeled but one leaf has this thick scab that developed around the 2nd day, but hasn't shown any signs of peeling or softening. Now there's also a scab/scar forming near the outline on the red part of the petal near it (you can see it in the picture). I've heard of people getting thick scabs that eventually fall off and pull all of the ink out, which would be a huge bummer. Has any one had a similar experience and how did it turn out for you? I'm going to stop putting lotion or aquaphor on that leaf for now and see if that helps. But its strange only part of the tattoo is reacting this way. (On a side note: my healing method is to leave the bandage on overnight, wash it good in the morning and let it dry out for about 24 hours, but washing it 3-5x that first day. Then I wash it about 3x a day and only apply a thin layer of aquaphor after it dries out completely after washing. Once it starts peeling, I continue washing it 3x a day and only put aveeno lotion on it after I wash it and dry it.)

I am tired of hearing this question and I am barely tattooed. anytime one of my TWO tattoos show, it is always the same question. How much it cost and what does it mean. The price part I answer truthfully, they always get sticker shock though. And always the reply is, "Oh my boy did mine for 20 bucks, you should hit him up" as they show me the most messed up cheetah tattoo I have ever seen. Then they go into this big long tirade about the fact tattoos are supposed to have meaning. "Blah blah blah my tattoo means x, y, z, and for my dead parakeet when I was three and my abandonment issues and how I have become stronger as a person." Then they stop and ask me if tattoos really hurt, because they have all these tattoos planned but are afraid it will hurt, and they dont like pain! it gets old, quick. and I only have 2 tattoos. How do you more covered people deal with this kind of bs? I am assuming you get it alot more than I do but honestly, I would feel like punching people if I had way more tattoos to be demanded on the spot to explain, give the cost, then listen to other people's future tattoo plans. A quick aside, I like telling people how much my tattoos cost, because the ones who want them but hate to pay, it makes them reconsider really getting a tattoo.

So...anyone on here got any? I fancy one somewhere, possibly a big one on my ribs when I: a) Man up enough to get my ribs done and b) Have finished my current ongoing piece and my next planned one! I've found some on google images and instagram that I like a lot, but I have found a lot more that look a bit ropey! Anybody got any good photos of this great image? and what kind of artist would you go for for this kind of style? Someone specialising in japanese style and similar presumably? I will post some of the ones I've found and like when I get a minute to play with google and photobucket! :D

how about this contrast? a full sleeve heavy blacked out.. the other (i will have a year or so to plan, save, and research artist) japanese sleeve? murdering out my sleeve feels uplifting and empowering to me on one hand.. but on the other is the fear like, oh what if i get hella bummed off having a black arm (im not a racist).. its also kind of dope to me because you dont see it too often.. it also seems like some shit you could grow old with (my tattoos now- no) and be cool with.. and to not feel like such a derelict; some really sick japanese traditional on the other arm.. to balance things out.. i think itd be a cool contrast.. everyone i talk to doesnt care, they just like the black sleeve idea.. also, how do you know whos right to do the heavy black work? you can contact reputable shops and theyll recommend somebody, saying theyve done this before a few times or whatever.. im worried about scarring and dont want to be lead astray.. lastly, and this may seem dumb.. i also have a lot of time to consider this.. but how the hell do you go about getting a japanese sleeve? sorry if this seems newjack-ish, but i know the elements that go into one.. but whenever i see a really cool one i think that it must be all the artists concept.. like my sleeve now has windbars, koi,. waves, flowers, etc.. but on all out traditional sleeve.. this is probably something you work half and half on with an artist? know that may sound obvious.. again, its also not something im going to jump right into.. im having removal on some medium-ish shit on the arm and will have a year or so to research, appreciate, and think about this.. - - - Updated - - - also, on the heavy black,, on my shoulder there is already some cool windbar shit that caps it off.. i want to leave that.. and maybe connect some of it somehow into a chest peice.. or even a half chest peice.. just trying to get some ideas bouncing around and creative juices flowing here..

I know there are probably more than enough people out there with their favorite sports team logo tattooed on their biceps but has anyone ever seen classy ones? I would love to see some creative traditional style sports tattoos. Here are some examples of what I am NOT talking about for all of us to laugh at:

Hey guys, still a newbie here and looking for your advice on a tattoo I'm planning. Now before I begin, I'm engaged to my beautiful fiancée, and she has a little girl of her own that I am not the father of, however I have been there since she was 4 months old (she is 4 now) so she is basically mine. We're already in talks about having more children, so this brings me here to find some of your suggestions! Basically what I want to somehow design would be a piece to signify all of the love in my life. (Fiancée, daughter, and those to come) I know it's "frowned upon" to get names on you as things may change, and people grow apart, etc, so I'm trying to stay away from that direction. I've tried browsing online for suggestions for step-daughter tattoos but haven't been able to come up with anything. I'd want something for my fiancée and her daughter, but like I said before, I'd need to be able to add onto it if I'm fortunate enough to have children of my own with her. Hopefully I didn't ramble on that it doesn't make sense, haha, but I'm totally open to your guy's suggestions! I've seen some great tattoos all over these forums so I'm excited to hear what you guys can think of. - Mike

Howdy! So in the dreaded wait to be tattooed thread i said my grandmother wanted a heart or a butterfly tattooed with her name. And while I wont have the money to be tattooed until about November or so, I decided to ask you what you guys thought about my possible ideas. I would want them redrawn but as a basic template I fucking love the dagger, heart and snake. However idk if that is what my grandma would want, so the heart with the white flower would problably be something she would like. And yes I took them from google but would have my artist redraw them with his style. i know this is like putting the cart before the horse but i am just anticipating it. Lol i plan on reigning myself in so I am not like those people who always talk about their next design and yadda yadda yadda but never seem to get it. I just found this and got excited with the possibility. Oh and excuse my blind typing error

I've always wanted a dragon tattoo, but the only pieces I've ever seen were on men and well ...manly. I think dragon tattoo designs could be amazing using the contours of a woman's body. With that said, do any of you know/seen/tattooed dragons on women? I would just "google" it, but every one here seems the best at pulling images from every corner of the internet. Also curious if any women on here have some dragons or what your opinions are on dragons on women following the publicity of the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo? I seriously considered giving up my dream of having a dragon after the American movie got so much attention. (Noomi Rapace's tattoo was better in the Swedish version......)

I've been toying with the idea of getting a tattoo of the 'santa muerte' virgin mary (skeleton instead of woman), I know theres been a thread on religious tattoos on the non religious, but I'd be interested to hear some of your opinions of getting something like this has nothing to do with your particular culture just because you like the imagery ?

Ok. I will go first. "When the inside of the arm isn't tattooed." Sorry, it's just a pet-peeve of mine -- people calling something a 'half-sleeve' when the inside of the bicep area isn't done. I've even heard people refer to a "Quarter sleeve" when someone just had a tattoo on his shoulder. In my way of thinking there isn't such a thing as a 'quarter sleeve'. You don't even start measuring til you got a real 'half-sleeve'. Then you can have a "three -quarter" or in Japanese vernacular a "7/10s". Then a full sleeve. Or "10/10s" Please, weigh in.
-
Is there a standard place where the sleeve ends? I wanted to be able to cover my sleeve with a dress shirt, and my artist stopped it exactly where I asked, but now that I've lived with it for a while I'm thinking it might look better a little longer. I'm probably over-thinking this (like I always do). So I'm asking the experts, where does the sleeve end? Thanks!

Hello everyone, Currently I am having a kraken taking down a ship tattooed it is basically a full front in a very simple traditional style. Was hoping to get some opinions on how a traditional style anchor chain would translate as a tattoo, my artist suggested to put a chain instead of rope. Personally I like the idea of chain, I have tried to find some chain tattoo pics without to much luck, basically the chain links would look like the pic. My biggest concern is I can not seem to find a lot of tattooed chain pics so it could be a bad idea. Appreciate any ideas or thoughts.

Well just signed up for a mega-huge tattoo that will incorporate most if not all of one ass cheek. Anyone have any experience with ass tattoos?
