  1. regular customer of mine was cool enough to drop by so i could get some healed photos of his robot battle leg.looking at it now i still like the piece but there are some things i wish i would have done differently. maybe next time.
  2. Not a religious person but I've always had a fascination with the art and stories that surround various religions. My house is covered in various spiritual/religious art including many of my tattoos. So the other day when hanging out at Temple Tattoo in Oakland with friends since we were in the neighborhood running an errand I realized we haven't discussed it on Last Sparrow Tattoo yet. I am always amazed when I step into Temple not only for the quality of work that has continuously come out of that shop and the various tattooers that are/have worked there but just the visual stimulus of the shop itself. Tattoo 13, Freddy Corbin's, other shop in Oakland is just as amazing and found myself in there a few weeks back just observing the art as well. Both shops are like religious and spiritual museums and the tattoos just as high of quality. I am a fan of in my tattoos and many art pieces I do have various saints as well as taking religious ideas and adding a touch of a darker Dia De Los Muertos to them. So as that jumping off point lets talk about religious and/or spiritual tattoos, tattoo designs from crosses, Jesus, Mary's, Saints, angels, cherubs, guardian angels to Buddhist influenced tattoos to Stars of David to ?????? And of course we love tattoo pictures!
  3. i've been thinking about this..i have on my left arm right now a tattoo of my dog on my shoulder, and a longhorn bull head on my inner bicep. i want to get an eagle / banner, but maybe i should put it on the other arm and save that space for a non-animal design? thoughts?
  4. Tattoo trends come and go through "larger" society but many of the tattooers on here have been in the trade of tattooing for some time now and have seen things circle through and also see certain tattoo designs stay popular amongst specific communities. So I am wondering what tattoo designs can you not see enough of? As well as what tattoos can you never get sick of drawing and tattooing? Thanks!
  5. I have trouble making decisions. I am slowly being tattooed...I have a good idea what i want to do with my left arm, my chest/stomach, my back and even my legs...but I am completely at a loss at what to do with my right arm (except what I NORMALLY do with it, *blush*). My question isn't "what should I do with my right arm", my question is how did YOU decide to cover yourself? Are all your pieces done on a whim? Did you meticulously plan out each body part? Just curious...
  6. Just yesterday I saw this almost completely blacked-out tattooed guy in a book that was at around 80% coverage using the negative space to make a few designs. This stuff is crazy! I am thinking most people get it as a cool coverup. Below is a reference, just imagine less skin more black!

    BEARDS!

I think it's time that we start addressing a very important subject- beards. Do you have one? Do you love a man or woman with a beard? If you're not sure where to start on this very important topic, you could always repurpose some of our tattoo questions and make them beard appropriate: When did you grow your first beard? Whose beards have you been influenced by? Experiences while traveling with beards? Funniest beard you've seen? Worst beard you've witnessed? Beard removal or coverup? Favorite celebrity beards? And is it okay for Brad Pitt to braid his beard because he's Brad Pitt? Appropriating ideas from other beards? Best beard care? These questions are just for a jumping off point, please don't feel limited by them. And most importantly, we want pictures!
  8. It seems I've already made a fair share of enemies here with my stance on tattooers with little to no tattoos and my post-whoring to reach the point I could ask this question, and I would like to apologize to any that I offended and ask that you not hold it against me now. My question is, I am new to New York City, and am seeking assistance finding a shop (or specific artist) that does (or you think could do) Chinese style art. Specifically, I am looking for someone who can pull off an original design in this style for a half sleeve; Thank you.
  9. Okay since it's shark week let's see some shark tattoos. I will start it off with a couple from my friend Ross Carlson of Living Art Tattoo and Artwork Rebels Portland. Ross coined himself the shark guy in town for a minute. The first tattoo is on me and was one of the first sharks he did the second is his latest shark tattoo.
  10. So I have been reading all the threads I can find and still need some help. I am trying to plan half a body suit, elbow to knee on my right side. I have my half sleeve and chest done now and ribs are next, I think? So my first problem is this, I want to collect from a few different tattooers but I want everything 'tied in' do you all think this will be an issue? Second is the planning part... where the hell do I start? I don't mean the design of the tattoo but I guess the placement of the entire thing. I see a few different sections, I want two tigers on my ribs. I think there should be enough room for that. Something else on my front hip area, like a Hannya mask or something. Something else on my ass and hip area, I don't know what then either one big design on my leg or maybe two, front and back Which leaves my back open and maybe the upper part of my shoulder, which I was going to get a Koi on this summer. Does this sound reasonable, insane or something? Is this something that I can figure out on this forum, I know it's probable a lot to ask, or should I stick to individual consultations? Thanks for reading this long post :)
  11. Im thinking of putting Pansies (my mums favorite flowers) in part of a tattoo, and i found plenty of good reference photos and whatnot, but i cant see it making a good tattoo? Just wondering on your opinions of whether or not a Pansy would tattoo well? Mum likes the ones just like the one im attaching a photo of. And also i was just wondering on what people thought about using flowers other than the most common, ie. roses and cherry blossoms and such.
  12. My Dad got this same design in Fayetteville, N.C. in 1953 (obviously not from Sailor Jerry, but the same design anyway). It's the only tattoo he ever got, and at 75 years old you can imagine that tattoo looks like total shit, and it does. I'm almost 46 now, but I can remember seeing seeing this tattoo since I was three years old. It got me hooked on anything and everything to do with tattoos ever since then. Pop's is on his left arm, about the size of a softball. I don't have any room on either arm for it so I'm gonna get it on my left leg on Saturday. Opinions?
  13. Since we've already got the Tiger Tattoos Thread and the Panther Tattoos Thread, I figured it's about time to round out the big cat trinity with a Lion Tattoos thread. Just came across this nice one by Chris Garver to start it off.
  14. Hey I'm a total newbie when it comes to tattoos but I have an idea for one that I would love to make happen. No words, just the image with a black backdrop. Is this doable/possible? Let me know guys. I would want this on my back and though I am not certain on the exact size I would want it to cover most of the surface area.
  15. I recently made a big mistake by getting a piece done by someone that just wanted to get me in a chair and take my money, after the first session i never went back because as you can see it turned out really bad.I need to know if what i have can be covered? i also have an old tribal band that i would like to cover as well, I live in Whittier, CA and I'm looking for the right Artist that can fix my problem, i have considered Laser Removal but that would be my last option, do you think there is anyone that can fix this and complete a full sleeve. Thanks
  16. I am pretty sure i have made my mind up on this topic that i have been ambivalent about for several years. I know the idea is not unique but like the concept so thought i would see if anyone else out there on this tattoo forum does anything similar. I have been contemplating whether or not I was going to save one of my legs for a passport like tattoo postcard. I have had this idea for awhile as mentioned above and know others who do this. So I have decided on this one tattoo idea design which I will have various tattooers when I'm on the road or they're guest spotting do their own interpretation of it in a three by three or similar size tattoo. I figure the smaller i keep it the more i can collect as well as it should enable me to get walk-in tattoos in one sitting much easier. The satisfaction of sitting for a few hours and more than likely less than a few hours and leave with a nice tattoo completed. Anyone out there have postcard-ish tattoos for your travels? Care to show pictures?
  17. My wife and I went to this yesterday: SF MOMA Artists Gallery: The Unruly Art of Ed Hardy. Really incredible stuff, much of which I'd never seen or only seen in books. He had lots of tiger depictions, too--always a plus for me. Anyone else here seen the show?
  18. I hope this is the right place to post this. i wanna have my first prints ever made for the houston body art expo in september. im curious to know a few things. 1. best paper to use. 2. best sight to order from. 3. is there a particular format i need to know beacuse i checked got print.com and there was to no format for tattoo prints for sale at conventions haha! please any help would be beneficial. P.s. at got print.com i did get 5000 double sided gloss cards for 50 bucks plus shipping. not fuckin bad!!
  19. I'm gonna stir the pot here, and I want to be clear that this is all in an effort to understand, not confront or argue. I promise. smiling.politely posted a painting the other day and asked about pricing in his thread. The minute I saw it, I thought, "Uh oh.." But you learn a lot from year to year as you get older and while tossing up a panther head painting and asking about pricing in a forum full of curmudgeonly tattooers is not the best idea, I thought, "Shit.. I guess I won't mention my own sketchbook. Or messing around with watercolors." So, aside from trying to cash in on generally accepted tattoo designs, it comes back to this question of ownership. As far back as I can remember, I drew and I drew on myself. When I got older I bought tattoo magazines and drew designs out of there, sometimes for friends, none of whom actually got tattooed. I was definitely not a great artist. I have the utmost respect for those on here who are career tattooers. But I sit in my kitchen when I have the time, and draw. And yep, sometimes they're (poorly drawn) panthers and pharoahs horses and lady heads. Ms. Rad said something on ShannonShirley's blog: "i even draw flash in my sketchbook, but i wouldn't dare show anyone what i've created... tattooing is a whole different world, and i've come to the conclusion to not even try to understand it since i will always be an outsider" So we're all obviously outsiders. I guess the question is why we're not allowed to draw traditional designs. I draw other things, too, but I feel that tattoos have been such a part of me for so long, it's hard not to want to try drawing a panther head a new way, or get my roses down. (Damn, roses are tough..) And right now, I'm cringing just like I did when I read the post asking about pricing for the painting because I almost don't want to read the responses. I'm sure smiling.politely didn't mean to insult anyone. I hope I'm not insulting anyone. One of the great things about LST is us regular civilians get to learn. I still remember Alanna's post about going from watching tattoo tv shows to learning about Amund Dietzel and getting a Dietzel tattoo from Nick Colella (I think it was). So.. if no one is trying to take money out your mouths, and someone shows an interest in the art side of it, why assume the worst? All tattooers were the same regular folks before, drawn to art, enamored with tattoos, drawn to it all for whatever reason. And I think there's something to be said for defending your craft so vehemently. Tell me to fuck off and die if you want, but this probably won't stop me from continuing to draw. Because unless someone straight up copies, nobody owns "panther head" or "pair of swallows." If they did, nobody would have been tattooing them for the last hundred years. Hope I didn't offend anyone, just trying to understand.
  20. I was just curious as to how much time other tattooers spend drawing for tattoos outside the shop. On average for me, I can spend an hour or two doing research and/ or looking at reference before I actually start drawing. And an additional 2 to 4 hours ( depending on subject matter ) on drawing something about the size of a foot ball or say half sleeve. Part 2 of this thread: I was also curious about how much time tattooers spend painting or creating additional art not directly for a tattoo, IE: prints, flash, tshirt designs, etc. And how important is that aspect of being a tattooer? Thanks everyone - Dan Martin
  21. Tattoos: From Maori to America | On Point I found this on a random google search, its a few years old but I thought it was a pretty interesting listen. Sorry if it has been posted before.
  22. Hey guys, new to the forum, was hoping to get some advice on what I can do with this half sleeve. I'd like to cover up or at the very least rework a large portion, but I'm not entirely sure whats possible. There is a lot of colour in it, so would I need to keep to large black and grey designs, or would I need to cover over with an intricate colourful design? Unfortunately moved away from my usual artist so still have to find a good artist locally to talk to. Any help appreciated! Cheers
  23. Anybody on here seen/heard of this guy before? The Human Billboard Website Here's some pictures of his stuff too Human Billboard Pics
  24. Sometimes, a tattoo wouldn't be funny or strange all by itself, but sometimes they don't match the projected or visible appearance of the person who's wearing the tattoo. I'd love to see some more examples. Here's mine, courtesy of Kreayshawn: "
