  1. I got two pictures sent to me recently that looked like they were straight from 850 Bryant (SF's County Jail) processing area but the person who sent them to me had no idea on any of the history. I couldn't decided where on the tattoo forum I was going to put them as the "Photography of People with Tattoos" was good but didn't seem right. Then the next closes thread was the "Russian Criminal Tattoos" thread but that wasn't a fit as they were clearly American and one was for sure Bay Area specific. I was thinking how cool it would be to see a tattoo picture book of American Prison and County Tattoos. So I've done a l little research and believe I located where they came from, Robert Gumpert, though could be wrong as the two I got weren't on his site but match his style. So while in the process I gathered some more prisoner tattoo pictures and thought it would be cool to have a thread of tattoo pictures of American prisoners in county and/or jail. It would great to get ahold of all the pictures they take of people and their tattoos when processing new inmates to the county/state bed and breakfast. Here's is an article I found on Juxtapoz about one of Robert Gumbert's recent projects: Please share your photos and also if you know of any books. Here is a book I found that looks good: Prison Tattoos
  2. I did a lot of shopping for an artists work I like. We spent about 10 minutes discussing the design I am interested in. The design isnt crazy. But I am curious to see how he is going to lay out the nebula I am looking for. I am NOT an artist. I picked this guy because I love his work. I made my appointments in April. My first appointment is June 6th. My question is...is it appropriate to stop into the shop and discuss my design with him again before my first appointment? I thought I could swing by when he has a bit of downtime and bring in a small gift or something (like a decent bottle of tequila or something). I guess I dont want him to forget what we discussed...on the other hand...I dont want to be "that guy". I dont want to be a pain in the ass. Thanks.
  3. What was the coolest tattoo you've ever seen and/or tattooed on a guy and why? What is the most attractive spot for a guy to have a tattoo? How about some pictures to accompany the stories and thoughts?
  4. I would like to know what is the best way to find a good cover-up tattoo Artist? Can every tattoo artist do a cover-up? Do all Artist like to do cover-ups? I'm having a real hard time finding one that has cover-up experience, i have found a few that say they are experts, but after looking at their work i get the feeling that the reason why they are the only ones that do it is because no one else in the shop wants to do it. Their work is not very impressive! So what do you look for on an Artist that does cover-ups? If there is any Artist out there in California that can fix/re-work or cover what i have please contact me.

    My Fudo

Wanted to share my torso piece, I don't have a pic right now of it finished, but this session was the 2nd to last before we did everything else. This was done by Nick Ley, and we plan on doing background on my ribs and fill up toward my shoulders in 2 months. We started this piece back in 2007, finished it 2010.
  6. So when writing a tattoo post recently I had this idea to start a new game like a "Where's Waldo" type game for tattoos. So rather than trying to find a guy in a hat with glasses and stripes I thought we could post a picture of a tattoo and let everyone take a swing at what the mistake(s) of a particular tattoo are. This is not too pick on people but to remind us as customers and tattooers to double and triple check the stencil before we get tattooed because bottom line as the tattoo consumer if we give the go ahead after looking in the mirror or what have yous the tattooers tells you to do it is our, the customers, mistake. So to kick it off, here is a tattoo, "Man's Ruin", on the inside of one of my arms. It was hard to get a good picture but this should work if not let me know and I can try to get an even better picture of this tattoo mistake. Let the tattoo games begin....heckle on...
  7. It has come to the point where there are several areas where I need to get filler space tattooed for various locations on my body so though it would be fun to start a thread around creative filler tattoos. Though don't know if creative is the word as I'm sure several if not hundreds at some point have gotten and/or tattooed the design idea(s) at some point in tattooing history or present. Some open spaces are bigger than others so small objects can be tattooed but also want to do more than just the "normal" filler. Normal being stars and dots, waves, windbars, and what else? I woke up yesterday and decided I wanted to get tattooed so went to Blackheart and had Cody Miller tattoo some of the blank areas on one of my arms. For awhile now I've flipped through the magazine Craphound and some other clip art magazines, books, etc gathering ideas so told Cody a few then let him have at it with what he felt fit as well as what he wanted to do. I ended up getting a hourglass, cross, arrow, heart, eye, stars, dots, and he finished a tattoo he started some months back. So what do you have tattooed and/or want for filler tattoos? Is there a place you gather your ideas from? For tattooers, what's the most creative ideas you've tattooed for filler? Above I mentioned the magazine Craphound and thought I'd put some links up for those interested in these badass magazines. Each issue is a different theme of tons and tons of clip art that is hilarious and a hurricane of awesomeness. They tend to be pricey and hard to find but worth the purchase. The cheaper ones are second prints. So here's some I've found on Amazon for sale for those interested: Crap Hound Zine #4 Clowns, Devils, & Bait Crap Hound Zine #5 Hands, Hearts, & Eyes Crap Hound Zine #6 Death, Telephones, & Scissors Crap Hound Zine #7 Church & State Part One
  8. I always love seeing pictures of good photography with good tattoos and this photo catches my eye every time I see it so thought I would post a new thread. I know many of you out there have some and would love to see them!!! Also if you know anything on this photo please share as I don't, thanks.
  9. I was trying to come up with a good design for a flintlock pistol with roses tattoo, but cant decide between these three? Obviously the designs for the actual pistol and roses would be much better, I just grabbed some quick ones off the internet to put these together. So my question is, which of these three do you like better? It would either be on my chest or back, but probably chest i think. I personally like the third the best i think, because it would follow the line of my collarbone nicely i think, and with four roses its almost too busy...
  10. What was the prettiest tattoo you've ever seen and/or tattooed on a girl and why? What is the most attractive spot for a girl to have a tattoo? Is the lower back really that bad of a spot? Are the ribs the new lower back tattoo? Or is behind the ear the new lower back tattoo? Lets see some tattoo pictures as well......
  11. This has become an interesting topic to me recently as i was involved in a situation where this was a bit of a controversy. (I recently had to get a piece redone) I have heard some shops do not redo other artists pieces ever, i know some artists that wont touch other certain artists pieces to not cause conflict of interest. What is your take as an artist on redoing/reworking/completely covering up other artists work? I feel like if the original artist didnt do it right the first time then they have no right to be upset if the client looks elsewhere for a better go.
  12. What do you have tattooed on your elbow? It seems like for many years the most popular tattoo designs for elbows I've seen were stars, spiderwebs, and roulette wheels though lately I've been seeing some new tattoo ideas. Curious if the previous "three" were mainly popular due to odd placement, lack of originality or another reason? I've heard the spiderweb stories/meanings but know this is for a smaller percentage of those wearing them. Would love to see some pictures of what various people have on here for elbow tattoos and also tattooers what they have tattooed. Tattooers, what was the best elbow tattoo you ever tattooed or got? For me it is part of a Dia De Los Muertos themed cobra half sleeve by Scott Sylvia done back at Temple.
  13. I posted this as a blog by accident, but seeing as how I'm soliciting your stories, too, I think it's better as a thread. Scott asked for stories, so here's mine. There was a guy in Austin in the early 90s who tattooed out of his house for years. He wasn't bad, and the price was definitely right (I think he charged $60 an hour). He didn't have an autoclave; he used a pressure cooker, instead. Sounded good enough for me. Right after I got my first tattoos, I knew I was hooked, but I also knew that I was poor, so I went to see him about getting more work. I looked through his book (which included a cover-up over a peace sign that said "I WOULD'VE TAKEN A BULLET FOR JOHN LENNON" under it) and found a Haida Indian dogfish shark design that I liked. I'd seen some of his tribal and thought he did a good job on it, so I booked an appointment with him. I showed up at the agreed-upon time and he stenciled it on. Then he grabbed a 3-round, which he proceeded to do the entire 3.5-hour tattoo with. You can see part of it above the gypsy cat in this pic: The best part: towards the end, one of his friends stopped by. He'd just come back from Amsterdam and was telling my artist all about it. Then he said, "Hey...you ever smoke hash?" My artist said, "No--but I'd be down to try!" So with my tattoo almost finished, he proceeded to take a smoke break and hit some hash for the first time in his life. He did the last half hour of my tattoo uber-stoned. I'm sure lots of you have better stories, ones involving Walkman motors and guitar strings, so please share them.

  15. For all the Last Sparrow Tattoo hardcore fans this Friday in Brooklyn filming for the new Madball video "All Or Nothing". Check the attached and go buy the new album!! While we are at it, favorite Madball song? Favorite Madball show memory? Madball tattoos?
  16. So as you may or may not have seen there were some request to start a new area for tattoo designs (thanks for the feedback!) so the LST Team decided to add a new tab obviously titled "Tattoo Designs" as you are here. But no one seems to be writing anything so I figured I would make an intro to our new tab and try to throw some gasoline and an M-80 on the fire to get it burning! Please do not let the title of the tab limit your writing, pictures, ideas, creative muses, etc to tattoo designs but let it be any art. What, who is your muse for a piece and how do you decide what genre/format to do it in? We see hundreds/thousands of dragons, tigers, skulls, roses, nautical, script, girls faces, daggers, yada yada art yet it continues to be done. There is nothing wrong with any of the above as I always enjoy seeing each artist or tattooers flavor added to it. For all you "foodies" out there think of the various spices or flavors chefs try over and over to make their own unique meal. Their own unique burger, grilled cheese, salad, you get the picture! Oh yeah if you have art or flash or tattoo machines or what have yous post some info with a link under the "Vendor Marketplace" as that are is pretty silent as well and we hope will generate some new business for you!! On with the bag of M-80s, lets do this......... I think the best roses are done by Tim Hendricks and would love to hear how he came to how they are now???
  17. That sound takes me back; I'd forgotten about the metallic timbre of the tchk-tchk-tchk. That poor woman is earning one beautiful back piece.
  18. Hi - im new here, but i figured as i was going to make this thread there wasnt much point in making another to introduce myself. Im 18, and just moved to a new country (huge change in my short life) and away from my parents, who have been my biggest supporters in everything ive ever done, and have always been there for me, so i thought i might get a tattoo to remember them. As i said in the title this will be my first real tattoo, i was pretty stupid and got a tattoo from a homemade gun a while ago, came out terribly but ill get it fixed eventually (i know, im an idiot, try not to make fun of me for that) anyway this is a really rough sketch i did, im absolutely un-artistic, so dont laugh, its just a basic idea. I want the ying yang part because my parents are polar opposits, but they work so well together, and 20+ years on i think they're still in love. The koi fish was just a way to represent each of them, one fish is going to be a more masculine blue, while the other is a more femanine orange or something along those lines. Hopefully ill find a good artist to take my idea and make an amazing peice of art out of it, and make it into a half sleeve. So what do you think? Good idea, bad idea? Think it will make a good tattoo? Thanks for your opinions. Uploaded with ImageShack.us

  20. How far are you willing to travel to get tattooed by a certain someone? And who? Here's a similar thread: Travel and shop choosing Feel free to jump in here or the other one, thanks.
  21. am i the only one having trouble confirming friend requests? seems to just take me back to the home page instead of adding the person?
  22. OK I am not asking anyone to design a tattoo before I get flamed. I have had a great offer from 4 tattoo artists I work with regarding my sleeve. The plan so far is for the 4 of them to get together with a big old sheet of paper and drawing supplies plus me and my blank arm. What happens next is kind of competative drawing with each artist doing a piece and biding for space. I am hoping that by the end of the night or the end of the booze at least we will have a pile of super cool pictures and a stencil for my arm. Tattooing of the outline is a job for the next day and each artist will then complete there designs over a few months. Firstly does this sound as good an idea to you guys as it does to me? Secondly I must have missed an important pitfall somewhere what is it? Lastly I have a list of must have elements for a hotrod sleve but I would welcome your ideas so I dont forget any classics.
  23. here is a couple new tattoos and a painting. hope everyone is doing well.
