  1. Would be cool to see some Mothers Tattoos/Flash etc. Looking for ideas...
  2. So I've been rolling ideas through my head, I drew up a Rams head & planning to get it tattooed on me sometime in August if I can figure out something to go along with it. I'm planning on getting it where the ribs & abdomen border each other, the face more on the outside of my abs & the back of the head & horns on the inside of the ribs; I don't know if that reference helps. I'll try to upload a decent picture of my drawing tomorrow. But for now regardless of placement & image, I was wondering what you guys might feel is a good image to contrast a Rams head, I originally wanted a Baboon face on the other side of my torso- I would love a killer baboon tattoo & feel like I'm putting that one off. However I think that it would seem a bit off I guess, a ram & a baboon? Doesn't have any correlation, I have 2 dames heads already on my ribs on the right (with Crescent moons, talismans, & candles)& a couple dapper gents (with books, Compass Squares, candles) on the left. They have a sort of Franternal/Occult "theme" so I want to continue with that I've drawn up a Baboon, a lamb, a gorilla, a lion, a coyote/wolf, elephant, & none of them really seem to sort of fit. I have a pretty good compass of each animals relative meaning or representation. But just can't see to put my finger on one that'll really parallel this Rams head & feel symmetical I hate throwing long OP threads out there, I feel like I kind of drag it out or burden other members with a convoluted question-- but I'll always feel the more info given the better answer can be given. ANY THOUGHTS?
  3. Searched, and didn't find a thread on wolf tattoos, so I decided to make one. Daryl Rodriguez, Hold It Down Tattoo: John Reardon: Chad Koeplinger: Jelle: Daniel Trocchio: Kim-Anh Nguyen-Dinh: Stefano Cera: Clay McCay: Erick Lynch: Ron Henry Wells: Steve Byrne: Jef Whitehead:
  4. They can get anything a guy can get and it won't look silly. But then they can also get... Hummingbirds. Dammit, I like hummingbirds. I always have a feeder for them every spring and summer. Can't get 'em Butterflies. I have a butterfly garden, too. I also really love to go to the city's butterfly garden on the bike trail. But a big fat greasy Dago with a butterfly tattoo? Bonus points: My favorite butterfly is the Swallowtail. UGGH! Unicorns: I can't really explain this one. I just think they kick ass. I'd like to get an octopus tattoo. I used to have these recurring dreams that humanity had exterminated itself and over the course of nigh countless millenia an Octopoid species became intelligent and dominant on the new Earth and I was their philosopher-king. I think it means they are my "spirit animal" or something. But I don't want my family to be making fun of my "pussy" tattoo and making James Bond Octopussy references against me. Ah fuck it. I'll get an eagle or something. I guess.
  5. I was wondering if anybody had any examples of these? I'm thinking of getting one this fall. I saw a ton of the Japanese/Asian Dragon tattoos. They were all excellently done but something seemed a little off and phony to me. Kinda seemed like a snake with legs. But it got me thinking that when I was a kid I was a SUPER dinosaur fanatic. I studied 'em, went on fossil digs and things like that. So I did some image searches for them and some common themes seem to be... "Dapper"/Tycoon Dinosaurs. You know, dinosaurs with things like Top Hats, Monocles, Canes, Business Suits, Pocketwatches, etc... Or they are doing something a dinosaur wouldn't do, like ride a skateboard, go surfing, eat an ice cream cone. I think they are pretty neat but I don't think they fit me too well. The first is a coverup, the second is a "original" tattoo Calf Tattoos It seems that the most popular dinosaur to tattoo is a Tyrannosaurus Rex. The next most common is a Velociraptor. A popular place to put these is the calves as opposed to the arms I was just wondering if anybody had some good images and ideas for dinosaur tattoos?
  6. I've seen a few of them at college and around town lately and I am wondering if the people know what message that sends? I've always associated the inverted cross with anti-Christianity, Satanism in particular. Until I had read on this message board that people will request "crosses that are facing them" I never thought of that as a reason for having an upside down cross tattoo. The only frame of reference I have for that tattoo would be somebody getting a swastika with the justification that it is for good luck and good health. Maybe they are Buddhist or something? Pretty much nobody is going to see a swastika tattoo and think "good luck charm."
  7. Hey, im goin on a trip this weekend, and ill probably pick up a new tattoo as ill be in a different city and dont have much access to good shops here. I think im just gonna walk in and come up with something on the spot (assuming i can even find a good artist to do a walk in) but I thought it might be cool to hear some random ideas from you folks, as ive seen some pretty interesting ideas posted on here in various threads. I was kinda wanting something on the collarbone, maybe a banner along the collarbone with an image on each side, on the front shoulder/chest area, but i could easily just get something random on my upper arm, so any ideas are welcome, lets see what you can come up with, and if you have an awesome idea, i might just turn it into a tattoo! Thanks
  8. Recently I've had a bunch of army people telling me about new changes in their policy on tattoos. Between what they have told me & some googling tells me that 670-1 will now prohibit any visible tattoos when wearing a uniform, which is different than a few years ago when they allowed neck & back of hand tattoos. Any new recruits will be barred, and people that are already grandfathered in will be prohibited from re-enlisting, unless they are removed. What I haven't been solid answer on yet is if the army will be paying for removal. Sleeves are also prohibited. That one is REALLY gonna screw me. I might not even be able to finish ones I have in progress, both on in-towners and clients that are currently deployed. Stuff I'm excited to do. Every shop in town is gonna take a huge blow because of this. Even besides how it affects me it sucks to see these people get screwed like that. Upcoming changes to AR 670-1 This next thing is where is gets tricky; someone came in to see about getting a really well done jerry design of a topless geisha & dragon on his forearm covered up, much to his dismay. Because it makes naughty thoughts or something like that. Kid tells me that anything consided sexually explicit or creates 'impure thoughts'. I wish I could remember the phrasing he used. Thing is, who decides what is considered 'impure'? He was saying he wasnt even allowed to put a bikini on the geisha. Do we have any army people here? If so, can you give me the specifics on this?
  9. I didn't see any other thread tackling this...soooo Let's see some of your favorite patriotic tattoo designs.
  10. I searched and couldn't find anything. What stuff has been blowing your mind lately? (other than the fact that there hasn't been a thread about this yet) Matt Mooney Ron Henry Wells Chad Koeplinger
  11. Since its the year of the dragon and dragons are bad ass lets see some dragons. Dragons you own or dragons you like, Post them up. I own these two. Thigh piece is from Shige, Yellow Blaze Japan and the dragon and sword is from Dean Sacred, Sacred Tattoo New Zealand.
  12. Thought it would be interesting to see and hear about "homemade", you know, the needle-wrapped-in-thread and ink variety tattoos, and about "jailhouse" work, be it single needle dipped in ink, guitar-string in a BIC pen barrel with a tape-player motor, or any other variant. I still have a few that haven't been covered, and I've seen many, many really nice pieces come out of various joints. I will post some pics as soon as I can scrounge a better camera, and get permission form some of my Brothers to post pix of their work. Anyone else have an interest in this? If not, Admins, please feel free to delete this!
  13. There is a lot of talking about tattooing and more about "the art of tattooing".Sometimes it seems like tattooing is somehow an "academical" art (sorry if my english are not excellent) and a lot are told about the design-the "piece of art".I consider tattooing somehow more technical than artistic and respecting the rule that the tattoo has to live through time the better possible i feel that i cant break some "red lines" which is the outline, the scale, the use of black color a lot and a lot more. I think there is not a lot of talking about this and a lot of tattooers puts art above tattooing..
  14. Sugar skulls appear prominently in Japanese style tattooing, though it seems to be a Mexican thing. Anyone care to shed some light on this? Thanks in advance!
  15. hey there. post rib pieces of yours or some that you think are cool! i have a tiny coverup to do. many possibilities, i'd like to get some ideas flying around. girl? eagle? hmm
  16. 2012 is the year of the dragon and after spending the Chinese New Year in Asia I thought it would be pretty cool to get a tattoo momento of the trip. I was looking at getting a dragon in the traditional american style but apart from some sailor jerry flash (which is kickass and I'm leaning towards getting) I can't find many other flash references apart from the odd one or two. Can anybody help me out? Sailor Jerry Col Todd
  17. Would it be unreasonable to ask a tattoo artist to recreate a painting that a friend did, as a tattoo? I could see an artist not wanting to copy someone else's work instead of drawing it themselves, but i also would like to have my friends design as a tattoo, so i was wondering what other people thought of this idea, or if it was something that most people wouldnt do?
  18. Pictures would be great to include, but originally wanted to start a conversation about the designs themselves. I love a native lady head simply cause they're pretty but what's the consensus on whipping up random designs that simply look Native American? You can usually find a chief/lady head design on old flash and they've been a staple of "tattoo history" for a long time. It seems like a fine line though; throw a headdress on em, some face paint and a slouchy shirt with some beadwork and there you go. Is there a worry that we're appropriating a culture that remains essentially unrepresented in America? Has anyone with a Native-themed tattoo ever received any feedback from a Native person? How about some of the strictly graphic designs that have been popping up lately? Should I have just not started this thread and leave the whole thing alone? Sort of a big conversation to have but I'd really love to know what you all think.. or if you've even thought about it at all. Also, anyone know Jack Red Cloud's story? I think he's discussed in the McCabe NYC Tattoo book but I leant that out to a friend.
  19. So, I was wondering if anyone wanted to post up some awesome traditional skulls?
  20. Might be the Whiskey talking here but , 2012 will be the year of the Tiger and Eagle for me yass !! I might get the ribs done definetly getting the other thigh covered . And mibbe something wierd from Ty Mcewan when he coimes back over. Anyone thought abpout what your up for getting next year ??
  21. I'm looking for some inspiration for Japanese-style foot tattoos, ideally with plenty of foot coverage but without being something that really should be bigger, if that makes sense? ie I'm not wanting to squeeze a dragon on there or something. Coverage like this, but other subject ideas and example pics would be appreciated.
  22. This came up in the other thread http://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/tattoo-101/1728-tattoo-what-you-want-misleading-true-page2.html#post24847, people getting religious tattoos, while being a atheist. I personally enjoy the strong emotions religious imagery stirs in people, whether they are a theist or atheist. What are your opinions?
  23. This thread idea comes from the "Un-planned Tattoo" thread and a conversation I had the other day while getting tattooed plus my general way of getting tattooed.... As most of my tattoos are impromptu I either have a vague idea of what I want or just want to get tattooed so I show the tattooer the open space and say: "Tattoo what you want" OR I give them a vague idea and say "Do what you want" OR I give them a few vague ideas and say "Your choice" I always end up with something I like and often times a tattoo that goes beyond what I could have drawn up in my head then attempted to dictate back to them my "great idea". Then when they show me and/or have drawn it on me I don't do, 'hey can you fix this" or "how about....." or what ever other thought that has me taking the creative autonomy back from the tattooer. Though from my conversation the other day and observations over the years it seems like more often than not when tattooers get the ol' "Do what you want" the customer ends up changing their minds and/or engaging in a back and forth dialogue on the most minor things. So here are my two questions for tattooers: 1) Do you prefer customers to come in telling you what they want or giving you creative autonomy? 2) How many times is too many for you to have to draw and redraw a design for the customer? Tattoo customers: 1) Do you tell the tattooer what you want or let them have free reign? 2) How interactive are you in the process once you see what they have drawn up?
  24. The other day I came across this piece by Chad Koeplinger And it got me thinking... I´ve seen quite a few tattoos done by respected artists with the swastika symbol incorporated in it. I assume that the majority of the members of this board already know that different variations of this symbol has been present for thousands of years before it was adopted by the nazi party in the 1920`s, but for most people today it is commonly assosiated with some form of white supremacism. Atleast in the Western part of the world. I´m sure none of the tattoos I just referred to was done with that ideoligy behind it, but almost anyone who sees a tattoo like that will immediately draw that conclusion. It makes me wonder why anyone wants it tattooed at all (even if it is a different variation of it and for completely different reasons). In the bonus episode of Tattoo Age Freddy Corbin mentioned that not even the Indian people would want the swastika symbol tattooed on them, despite it being represented throughout their religious artwork. I believe the swastika in the Koeplinger tattoo is the buddhist variation, but please correct me if I`m wrong. ..................................... (I´ve considered back and forth on whether or not to post this thread as I don´t want to offend anyone or start an unhealthy discussion. I´ll leave it up to @dari , @hogg , @steve1461686340 and the other moderators to decide it´s worth a shot.)
  25. Buying a king size print from one of your favorite artists, getting it framed properly, hanging it on your wall and taking two steps back. I´ve been staring at the original hanging by Marius´ station for hours while getting tattooed, so when he decided to make giclee prints of it I had to rape my wallet and buy one. Stoked!
