I am a:

Rank

  1. To start off as of right now I have no tattoos. I have been trying to get a tattoo for awhile but money or other issues have cropped up. Two weeks ago I got in touch with an artist and signed up for a leg piece. (starting at the foot to the knee filled in completely. My friends said that was "too much for a first", but the funny thing is I am already looking at getting another huge piece started by a favorite artist, and the possibility of sleeve by the same guy by next year. Although the sleeve is a bigger step since I work in a VERY Conservative field (Wall St) and will need to think more about that. Am I going way to fast? I personally don't believe so
  2. Ok. I will go first. "When the inside of the arm isn't tattooed." Sorry, it's just a pet-peeve of mine -- people calling something a 'half-sleeve' when the inside of the bicep area isn't done. I've even heard people refer to a "Quarter sleeve" when someone just had a tattoo on his shoulder. In my way of thinking there isn't such a thing as a 'quarter sleeve'. You don't even start measuring til you got a real 'half-sleeve'. Then you can have a "three -quarter" or in Japanese vernacular a "7/10s". Then a full sleeve. Or "10/10s" Please, weigh in.
  3. is it bullshit? is it a waste of time? scam? what do people think about yelp and it's effect on the modern tattoo business
  4. Post images of things and people that you find rad, gnarly, far-out or inspirational. I'll go first... [images removed after they became broken..]
  5. Heading to Oakland, California to see Freddy Corbin at Temple tattoo to get inked for our 25th wedding anniversary. Appointment is noon, Tuesday. Daniel Higgs did the original wedding tattoos at Realistic Studio in San Francisco and Freddy was in the shop watching and making comments while he was doing us. Daniel doesn't do tattoos any more. So our first choice is Freddy to keep spiritual continuity. The wife and me are getting a "25-XXV added somewhere . I am also getting a "Dragon" mixed into it... I'll keep you up to date.
  6. This came up in the other thread http://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/tattoo-101/1728-tattoo-what-you-want-misleading-true-page2.html#post24847, people getting religious tattoos, while being a atheist. I personally enjoy the strong emotions religious imagery stirs in people, whether they are a theist or atheist. What are your opinions?
  7. So, I was wondering if anyone wanted to post up some awesome traditional skulls?
  8. Looking to get a traditional dagger tattoo in the near future as funds permit. Let's see what you got or any favorites you have seen.
  9. Since its the year of the dragon and dragons are bad ass lets see some dragons. Dragons you own or dragons you like, Post them up. I own these two. Thigh piece is from Shige, Yellow Blaze Japan and the dragon and sword is from Dean Sacred, Sacred Tattoo New Zealand.
  10. I've done a search on the net and on here but can't find what I'm looking for. Does anyone know a source to explain the symbolism behind Japanese tattoos? I'm not talking about high level Koi means this, Dragon means this; I'm talking about a really detailed explanation such as an explanation of what the symbolism behind a Samurai holding a scroll in his mouth is, or what it means for a Samurai to be shown killing a Koi fish. I'm thinking about ideas for my next big piece and don't just want to put some random symbols on myself, or if I do, I want to do it by choice, not by ignorance. Thanks.
  11. anyone want to give anymore insight on this? i know a little bit about it from speaking to Horitaka once at a book signing, but i don't really get it. anyone care to explain?
  12. So I know there are lots of myths out there for tattoo after care, so I would like to open up the discussion to what has worked for you? Every bodies chemistry is unique so lets hear it....... About three to four hours after getting tattooed I wash my new tattoo with warm water and soap then until it heals I use non-scented, no vitamins Eucerin Lotion. This is the equation that I have learned works best on my body after many attempts and this heals quickest.
  13. Thought it would be interesting to see and hear about "homemade", you know, the needle-wrapped-in-thread and ink variety tattoos, and about "jailhouse" work, be it single needle dipped in ink, guitar-string in a BIC pen barrel with a tape-player motor, or any other variant. I still have a few that haven't been covered, and I've seen many, many really nice pieces come out of various joints. I will post some pics as soon as I can scrounge a better camera, and get permission form some of my Brothers to post pix of their work. Anyone else have an interest in this? If not, Admins, please feel free to delete this!
  14. I love praying hands! I have a traditional pair from Scott Sylvia on my forearm with a banner that says "Thank You" to remind me to be grateful for all that I have. I love what people come up with to make them a little different, unique, or more personal. Here's an example that my hubby just did on a kid who is a Harley mechanic. *Please forgive the bad cell phone pic. It's all I had.
  15. Lets see some. I don't know if there is already a thread strictly for awesome/funny/realistic/old school skulls but if there is i couldn't find it so i decided to start this thread! bring em onnnnnnnn
  16. Eagles to me are like Rock of Ages, classic/timeless tattoos! The mental association with the word "tattoo" within the top five images that will pop into my head are eagles. Something about them always catches my eye in tattooers portfolios and flash at tattoo shops. I'm often drawn to the older flash at shops and will look for long periods of time at each eagle. I love seeing old tattoo pictures as well with people who have large eagle chestpieces (I couldn't find any online so pls share if you have some). I have seen some amazing ones pop up on this tattoo forum as well and hope the users will post theirs here that they have collected, tattooed, and drawn. I have quickly gathered some eagle pictures from tattooers who I think do great eagles: Lindsey Carmichael, Nick Colella, Thomas Hooper, Chad Koeplinger, Stefan Johnsson, and Tim Lehi. Share your favorite eagle tattoos and tattooers who do the eagles you like.....have at it!
  17. Let me first state that I will not besmirch the name of several fine artists with a "Who is the slowest tattooer?" thread. Instead, let's discuss the fastest of the fast. I'll try to limit this to personal experience, but feel free to mention lightning-fast artists you've witnessed, too. Our very own Scott Sylvia inspired this thread. I was at Forever Tattoo in Sacramento over the weekend and Ian Carder showed me the Rock of Ages backpiece that Scott put on him. He said it took about 15 hours. I guess I should stop being surprised at this point, but damn. Horitaka is also really fast. I have a black and gray falcon from him that takes up most of my shin. It took him an hour. Theo Mindell put a huge dragon head on my knee in only 3 hours--and he kept apologizing for taking so long! I'm not a tattooer, but it seems like the knee cap is moving target. That skin shifts all over the place. And I've never been tattooed by Filip Leu, but no fast tattooer thread would be complete without him. I was lucky enough to see some of the work he did while at Diamond Club, like this tiger that (I think) he completed in 5 hours: Along the same lines, I've never been tattooed by Robert Atkinson, but holy hell, is that guy fast.
  18. Is their anyway to incorporate very different styles to not "clash" with other styles? I.E. biomechanical vs american traditional vs Japanese traditional. I ask this because I am a fan of almost all styles and would like all of them just I don't know how they would work close to each other. My new artist said that you should stick with a overall style but I would somehow like to merge all of them somehow... (I am going for full body-suit coverage). Any thoughts?
  19. So...anyone on here got any? I fancy one somewhere, possibly a big one on my ribs when I: a) Man up enough to get my ribs done and b) Have finished my current ongoing piece and my next planned one! I've found some on google images and instagram that I like a lot, but I have found a lot more that look a bit ropey! Anybody got any good photos of this great image? and what kind of artist would you go for for this kind of style? Someone specialising in japanese style and similar presumably? I will post some of the ones I've found and like when I get a minute to play with google and photobucket! :D
  20. I am tired of hearing this question and I am barely tattooed. anytime one of my TWO tattoos show, it is always the same question. How much it cost and what does it mean. The price part I answer truthfully, they always get sticker shock though. And always the reply is, "Oh my boy did mine for 20 bucks, you should hit him up" as they show me the most messed up cheetah tattoo I have ever seen. Then they go into this big long tirade about the fact tattoos are supposed to have meaning. "Blah blah blah my tattoo means x, y, z, and for my dead parakeet when I was three and my abandonment issues and how I have become stronger as a person." Then they stop and ask me if tattoos really hurt, because they have all these tattoos planned but are afraid it will hurt, and they dont like pain! it gets old, quick. and I only have 2 tattoos. How do you more covered people deal with this kind of bs? I am assuming you get it alot more than I do but honestly, I would feel like punching people if I had way more tattoos to be demanded on the spot to explain, give the cost, then listen to other people's future tattoo plans. A quick aside, I like telling people how much my tattoos cost, because the ones who want them but hate to pay, it makes them reconsider really getting a tattoo.
  21. Anyone have experience with tattoos with cross hatch shading done? I am planning a tattoo based on "Dance of Death" (medieval woodcuttings) which involves cross hatch style shading. Anyone have an idea if this style holds up well in tattoos, especially after a few years blending into each other. Example (see avatar or below)
  22. I know that there is Tattoo artists and collectors here. I just wondering what your thoughts are on the Tattoo artists that sign their work. Good idea, bad idea, or do you care either way? I've been surfing on the web and have seen some tattoos with what appears to be a signature along with it. I personally do not think that its a good idea. You went to an artist that you choose and you know who it was, if they have a unique style everyone will know who did the tattoo. That alone should be the signature.
  23. I've been looking at a lot of tattoo cover-up pictures recently and figured it'd be cool to see what cover-ups LSTers have both gotten as well as tattooed. So if you have before and after pictures please post them up. Here's a recent one I found on Sarah Schor's Blog from King's Avenue in New York. I really like the use of the hair in this lady head to cover-up the old tattoo lettering. For me I enjoy seeing cover-ups that could stand on their own without being a cover-up. What I mean is yes the old tattoo is not visible but had you not had to have it placed where it is you would get in anywhere and anyways. Lets see 'em.......
  24. Seeing those awesome Bert Grimm pictures in recent posts reminds me of this traditional design which is originally credited to an unknown artist ca.1900. The combatants are said to be locked in "mortal combat " How do u like yours done?Do you favour the more chinese ,crazy looking traditional dragon a la Jerry Collins.Or are you partial to a more Japanese version ? Even the animals are subject to change -who do you like to see in the mix ?
  25. I have seen a plethora of owl tattoos recently. Often they are holding a key, and a key hole is incorporated in the owls body. I've searched and searched but I can't find the reason behind it. Does anyone know the reason for this(if there is one)?
