  1. Pictures would be great to include, but originally wanted to start a conversation about the designs themselves. I love a native lady head simply cause they're pretty but what's the consensus on whipping up random designs that simply look Native American? You can usually find a chief/lady head design on old flash and they've been a staple of "tattoo history" for a long time. It seems like a fine line though; throw a headdress on em, some face paint and a slouchy shirt with some beadwork and there you go. Is there a worry that we're appropriating a culture that remains essentially unrepresented in America? Has anyone with a Native-themed tattoo ever received any feedback from a Native person? How about some of the strictly graphic designs that have been popping up lately? Should I have just not started this thread and leave the whole thing alone? Sort of a big conversation to have but I'd really love to know what you all think.. or if you've even thought about it at all. Also, anyone know Jack Red Cloud's story? I think he's discussed in the McCabe NYC Tattoo book but I leant that out to a friend.
  2. There is a lot of talking about tattooing and more about "the art of tattooing".Sometimes it seems like tattooing is somehow an "academical" art (sorry if my english are not excellent) and a lot are told about the design-the "piece of art".I consider tattooing somehow more technical than artistic and respecting the rule that the tattoo has to live through time the better possible i feel that i cant break some "red lines" which is the outline, the scale, the use of black color a lot and a lot more. I think there is not a lot of talking about this and a lot of tattooers puts art above tattooing..
  3. I don't know about you guys, but I sometimes struggle to find a Christian themed tattoo that really excites me, and I'm a bona fide Jesus freak. Don't get me wrong, Rock of Ages is cool and all, but other than that crosses and praying hands don't really excite me. Do you guys have or know of any cool Christian Themed tattoos?
  4. So over the past few weeks I've had some conversations outside this forum with people on tattoo coverups and seem to be seeing more than the normal amount for me. I've taken some of the tips from this thread in LST tattoo forum Tattoo Cover up or removal and shared it with the individuals. But have had some observations lead to assumptions that I want to turn to hypothesis by asking on this tattoo forum that I thought could be fun and intriguing. One of my friends was edge at a very young age as she grew up around lots of east coast edge kids that were also family members then broke it a few months after she turned twenty-one. During here teen years see accumulated four different straight edge tattoos. She has been in the process of covering them up for some years now but the one that really catches my eye is this large belly rocker of the three X's covered up by big roses. I understand three large X's in black ink are going to be difficult to cover and the tattooer did a good job except if you look closely then you can totally see them. So my first questions based off of some years observations and now reflections not only with this individual but others are: -Are roses and panthers the most common "objects" used to cover-up tattoos? -What other ones are common "goto" tattoos for tattoo coverups? Onto the other part....so another one of my friends has this tattoo outlined on her back that she refuses to let people see so much that when she's at the beach or other warmer climates she opts to wear a "tank-kini" rather than a bikini as she dislikes the tattoo that much. It is just an outline and spans about three quarters of her back in more of a "frame" manner and not so much the center and wants to do a tattoo cover-up. She has been considering the laser then coverup route and if she was in DC I'd send her to Karl Hedgepath at Jinxproof for laser and coverup but she is in the Bay Area. So the next set of questions: -Bay Area good tattoo laser removal businesses? -Bay Area good tattoo coverup tattooers? -Also to make this more informative for other locations...Who in you opinion does the best tattoo coverup? If you answer this please list the tattooers name, shop, and location (if you know all that info). Of course if you have before and after photos share them!! Thanks and let the schooling begin.........
  5. So - here's my dilemma. My goal is "squid pants". And I honestly don't really care much what all goes into them. I have a (short) list of things that I don't want... but otherwise I care more about just having good looking work on me. I want "fancy" legs. That's it. So how do I convey this to potential tattooers without sounding like a total flake? I worry that if I say "I don't care, do whatever you want, except for "x" things" they'll brush me off as someone who is in it just for some kind of status thing or something... which isn't the case at all. It's VERY personal to me. It's just that I'm not attached to any specific imagery. I don't want to "overshare" with my tale of woe about why exactly I need fancy legs... but I don't want to get written off either... Any advice?
  6. Here is some pics of the cover-up I just had done. I don't have a pic of the finished tattoo I will get one taken when my wife gets back. Before Almost done Almost done back view The whole photo set on Flickr I am so glad to have this cover-up done. I didn't care about the spider I got it when I was 16 and was quite used to it... kind of liked it to be honest. I will get another small spider again one day. The dragonflies on the other hand... I REALLY hated them. I went into a street shop one day looking for a band of lizards (which would have still sucked) and ended up with this because I was in a hurry, stupid and did not know any better. To be honest it turned me from tattoo for years. I went in for some script on my wrist and started talking to a real tattooer that I got brave again. The tattoo is done my Alicia E from Trouble Bound Studios in Newfoundland. The reason for a dragon? Well my whole mindset on life changed when I became a dad. I suddenly knew my role had changed to protecter and that is what a dragon is to me. OK enough typing, did I mention I tend to ramble?
  7. Haven't been around for a while as I don't have regular Internet access, but I had a quick question... I've heard and read tons of info on tattooing over scars, and the results of. My question is sort of the opposite. I'm hoping to do a full chest piece over the next month or two, and I'm quite excited for it. My only concern is that at some point in the next 5 years or so, I will be having heart surgery, replacing the valves due to a lifelong condition. When they do the surgery, chances are (as I understand it) very low that it will be an open heart surgery similar to the one I had as a child, but if that did happen what effect would it have on the tattoo? I realize it will mess it up considerably, but does anyone know if it would leave fresh, skin toned scar tissue that could eventually be touched up, or will it just be a jumbled mess of ink? Does anyone have experience with scarring over tattoos, either by surgery or accident or anything? I've never heard anything about it, but I'm certainly not the most educated tattoo wise, being from a small redneck town... I realize the best possible idea would be to wait until after the surgery, but the chances of having open heart as opposed to the surgery done by camera (laparoscopic?) is very low, and I'm mostly just asking out of curiosity rather than concern... Thanks for any and all input/advice
  8. I know there are probably more than enough people out there with their favorite sports team logo tattooed on their biceps but has anyone ever seen classy ones? I would love to see some creative traditional style sports tattoos. Here are some examples of what I am NOT talking about for all of us to laugh at:
  9. Well just signed up for a mega-huge tattoo that will incorporate most if not all of one ass cheek. Anyone have any experience with ass tattoos?
  10. I've always wanted a dragon tattoo, but the only pieces I've ever seen were on men and well ...manly. I think dragon tattoo designs could be amazing using the contours of a woman's body. With that said, do any of you know/seen/tattooed dragons on women? I would just "google" it, but every one here seems the best at pulling images from every corner of the internet. Also curious if any women on here have some dragons or what your opinions are on dragons on women following the publicity of the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo? I seriously considered giving up my dream of having a dragon after the American movie got so much attention. (Noomi Rapace's tattoo was better in the Swedish version......)
  11. how about this contrast? a full sleeve heavy blacked out.. the other (i will have a year or so to plan, save, and research artist) japanese sleeve? murdering out my sleeve feels uplifting and empowering to me on one hand.. but on the other is the fear like, oh what if i get hella bummed off having a black arm (im not a racist).. its also kind of dope to me because you dont see it too often.. it also seems like some shit you could grow old with (my tattoos now- no) and be cool with.. and to not feel like such a derelict; some really sick japanese traditional on the other arm.. to balance things out.. i think itd be a cool contrast.. everyone i talk to doesnt care, they just like the black sleeve idea.. also, how do you know whos right to do the heavy black work? you can contact reputable shops and theyll recommend somebody, saying theyve done this before a few times or whatever.. im worried about scarring and dont want to be lead astray.. lastly, and this may seem dumb.. i also have a lot of time to consider this.. but how the hell do you go about getting a japanese sleeve? sorry if this seems newjack-ish, but i know the elements that go into one.. but whenever i see a really cool one i think that it must be all the artists concept.. like my sleeve now has windbars, koi,. waves, flowers, etc.. but on all out traditional sleeve.. this is probably something you work half and half on with an artist? know that may sound obvious.. again, its also not something im going to jump right into.. im having removal on some medium-ish shit on the arm and will have a year or so to research, appreciate, and think about this.. - - - Updated - - - also, on the heavy black,, on my shoulder there is already some cool windbar shit that caps it off.. i want to leave that.. and maybe connect some of it somehow into a chest peice.. or even a half chest peice.. just trying to get some ideas bouncing around and creative juices flowing here..
  12. Hey guys, still a newbie here and looking for your advice on a tattoo I'm planning. Now before I begin, I'm engaged to my beautiful fiancée, and she has a little girl of her own that I am not the father of, however I have been there since she was 4 months old (she is 4 now) so she is basically mine. We're already in talks about having more children, so this brings me here to find some of your suggestions! Basically what I want to somehow design would be a piece to signify all of the love in my life. (Fiancée, daughter, and those to come) I know it's "frowned upon" to get names on you as things may change, and people grow apart, etc, so I'm trying to stay away from that direction. I've tried browsing online for suggestions for step-daughter tattoos but haven't been able to come up with anything. I'd want something for my fiancée and her daughter, but like I said before, I'd need to be able to add onto it if I'm fortunate enough to have children of my own with her. Hopefully I didn't ramble on that it doesn't make sense, haha, but I'm totally open to your guy's suggestions! I've seen some great tattoos all over these forums so I'm excited to hear what you guys can think of. - Mike
  13. The other day I came across this piece by Chad Koeplinger And it got me thinking... I´ve seen quite a few tattoos done by respected artists with the swastika symbol incorporated in it. I assume that the majority of the members of this board already know that different variations of this symbol has been present for thousands of years before it was adopted by the nazi party in the 1920`s, but for most people today it is commonly assosiated with some form of white supremacism. Atleast in the Western part of the world. I´m sure none of the tattoos I just referred to was done with that ideoligy behind it, but almost anyone who sees a tattoo like that will immediately draw that conclusion. It makes me wonder why anyone wants it tattooed at all (even if it is a different variation of it and for completely different reasons). In the bonus episode of Tattoo Age Freddy Corbin mentioned that not even the Indian people would want the swastika symbol tattooed on them, despite it being represented throughout their religious artwork. I believe the swastika in the Koeplinger tattoo is the buddhist variation, but please correct me if I`m wrong. ..................................... (I´ve considered back and forth on whether or not to post this thread as I don´t want to offend anyone or start an unhealthy discussion. I´ll leave it up to @dari , @hogg , @steve1461686340 and the other moderators to decide it´s worth a shot.)
  14. Hey, im goin on a trip this weekend, and ill probably pick up a new tattoo as ill be in a different city and dont have much access to good shops here. I think im just gonna walk in and come up with something on the spot (assuming i can even find a good artist to do a walk in) but I thought it might be cool to hear some random ideas from you folks, as ive seen some pretty interesting ideas posted on here in various threads. I was kinda wanting something on the collarbone, maybe a banner along the collarbone with an image on each side, on the front shoulder/chest area, but i could easily just get something random on my upper arm, so any ideas are welcome, lets see what you can come up with, and if you have an awesome idea, i might just turn it into a tattoo! Thanks
  15. Any suggestions where to take this? I was just going to do this with a super simple color scheme. Brown, red, light and navy blue, green, yellow. still have shading left too... he didnt want to work on the lower shit after the outline.
  16. Hello everyone, Currently I am having a kraken taking down a ship tattooed it is basically a full front in a very simple traditional style. Was hoping to get some opinions on how a traditional style anchor chain would translate as a tattoo, my artist suggested to put a chain instead of rope. Personally I like the idea of chain, I have tried to find some chain tattoo pics without to much luck, basically the chain links would look like the pic. My biggest concern is I can not seem to find a lot of tattooed chain pics so it could be a bad idea. Appreciate any ideas or thoughts.
  17. Over the past few months we've had some awesome conversations in the various tattoo forum threads on Japanese tattoo designs/tattooers, Japanese tattoo politics, and much much more around Japanese culture both historical and present day. Plus seen some great tattoo pictures from smaller tattoos to larger Japanese inspired body suits. Through all of this I noticed a thread solely dedicated to Japanese Tattoos was never started so the time has come.... For me I have been watching Stewart Robson's work on his blog as well as some of his work that has been posted on this site for some time now. I love the fact that he does works in progress pictures so as a fan of tattoos you can watch the process unfold on larger japanese tattoos. What stands out to me right now other than the attention to details and dedication by both tattooers and tattoo collectors to invest so much time into the piece but also the limited colors. The use of so much black with only a few colors if any really make a Japanese inspired tattoo standout to me. For one of the pictures below by Stewart I mentioned this I think in the Full Back Piece Thread is the carp on the upper right leg....so sick! From the tail to the face, the shading and colors matching how you'd potentially see one in a koi pond. I have more tattooers whose Japanese tattoos I follow regularly but will start there. Look forward to hearing everyone else's stories/opinions and seeing your pictures. Stewart Robson Blog (The photos I grabbed are recent ones but often times scroll all the way through all the pages and am never disappointed as it is time well spent!)
  18. Howdy! So in the dreaded wait to be tattooed thread i said my grandmother wanted a heart or a butterfly tattooed with her name. And while I wont have the money to be tattooed until about November or so, I decided to ask you what you guys thought about my possible ideas. I would want them redrawn but as a basic template I fucking love the dagger, heart and snake. However idk if that is what my grandma would want, so the heart with the white flower would problably be something she would like. And yes I took them from google but would have my artist redraw them with his style. i know this is like putting the cart before the horse but i am just anticipating it. Lol i plan on reigning myself in so I am not like those people who always talk about their next design and yadda yadda yadda but never seem to get it. I just found this and got excited with the possibility. Oh and excuse my blind typing error
  19. I've been toying with the idea of getting a tattoo of the 'santa muerte' virgin mary (skeleton instead of woman), I know theres been a thread on religious tattoos on the non religious, but I'd be interested to hear some of your opinions of getting something like this has nothing to do with your particular culture just because you like the imagery ?
  20. For several years now I've been fine-tuning an idea for a shoulder/quarter sleeve piece, but I just can't afford it right now and I don't think something that big is great for a first tattoo. So I came up with a much simpler design. I'm thinking I'll put it on my left forearm: As my best friend was quick to point out everyone's going to think I'm a huge Motörhead fan, and though the ace of spades is inspired by a different song, there are worse ways to misinterpret a tattoo, right? I'm not sure where I'll go to get it done yet, though.
  21. The who, what, where, when, and why of your latest tattoo? Picture too pls!
  22. They can get anything a guy can get and it won't look silly. But then they can also get... Hummingbirds. Dammit, I like hummingbirds. I always have a feeder for them every spring and summer. Can't get 'em Butterflies. I have a butterfly garden, too. I also really love to go to the city's butterfly garden on the bike trail. But a big fat greasy Dago with a butterfly tattoo? Bonus points: My favorite butterfly is the Swallowtail. UGGH! Unicorns: I can't really explain this one. I just think they kick ass. I'd like to get an octopus tattoo. I used to have these recurring dreams that humanity had exterminated itself and over the course of nigh countless millenia an Octopoid species became intelligent and dominant on the new Earth and I was their philosopher-king. I think it means they are my "spirit animal" or something. But I don't want my family to be making fun of my "pussy" tattoo and making James Bond Octopussy references against me. Ah fuck it. I'll get an eagle or something. I guess.
  23. what's everyone's opinion on this? i know there are some artists out there that feel that if one artist bases their design off of another artist's work, that is stealing. however, almost every artists incorporates the use of designs that have been used for many, many years. what's the difference to you (if there is one)? since i'm not an artist, only a client, i'm just curious to hear what everyone thinks.
  24. Curious if anyone else in here collects old acetate stencils? I would really like to have a peek at other peoples collections. For some reason I almost enjoy collecting stencils more than flash. I just like holding an old acetate in my hand and imagining how many people got tattoos from it. Here are some of my collection. I have a bunch more I need to take pictures of. Bob Shaw Owen Jensen
  25. So I've been rolling ideas through my head, I drew up a Rams head & planning to get it tattooed on me sometime in August if I can figure out something to go along with it. I'm planning on getting it where the ribs & abdomen border each other, the face more on the outside of my abs & the back of the head & horns on the inside of the ribs; I don't know if that reference helps. I'll try to upload a decent picture of my drawing tomorrow. But for now regardless of placement & image, I was wondering what you guys might feel is a good image to contrast a Rams head, I originally wanted a Baboon face on the other side of my torso- I would love a killer baboon tattoo & feel like I'm putting that one off. However I think that it would seem a bit off I guess, a ram & a baboon? Doesn't have any correlation, I have 2 dames heads already on my ribs on the right (with Crescent moons, talismans, & candles)& a couple dapper gents (with books, Compass Squares, candles) on the left. They have a sort of Franternal/Occult "theme" so I want to continue with that I've drawn up a Baboon, a lamb, a gorilla, a lion, a coyote/wolf, elephant, & none of them really seem to sort of fit. I have a pretty good compass of each animals relative meaning or representation. But just can't see to put my finger on one that'll really parallel this Rams head & feel symmetical I hate throwing long OP threads out there, I feel like I kind of drag it out or burden other members with a convoluted question-- but I'll always feel the more info given the better answer can be given. ANY THOUGHTS?
