  1. So as I was walking along Venice Beach today, I saw tons of tourists entering a myriad of tattoo/piercing shops. Seeing as most of the tourists were absolute 'tards, I can only imagine what kind of "fun" those artists deal with on a regular basis. Anyways, what's your worst walk-in story? Whether it was an abnormally absurd request or an out of his/her mind customer tell your story here!
  2. Hi all, I was wondering what your opinions were when it comes to filling in the spaces between old school style tattoos? Stars and dots, shading or let each piece stand on it`s own? Any photos of what you love or hate would be appreciated. Have a good one.
  3. I was wondering if anybody had any examples of these? I'm thinking of getting one this fall. I saw a ton of the Japanese/Asian Dragon tattoos. They were all excellently done but something seemed a little off and phony to me. Kinda seemed like a snake with legs. But it got me thinking that when I was a kid I was a SUPER dinosaur fanatic. I studied 'em, went on fossil digs and things like that. So I did some image searches for them and some common themes seem to be... "Dapper"/Tycoon Dinosaurs. You know, dinosaurs with things like Top Hats, Monocles, Canes, Business Suits, Pocketwatches, etc... Or they are doing something a dinosaur wouldn't do, like ride a skateboard, go surfing, eat an ice cream cone. I think they are pretty neat but I don't think they fit me too well. The first is a coverup, the second is a "original" tattoo Calf Tattoos It seems that the most popular dinosaur to tattoo is a Tyrannosaurus Rex. The next most common is a Velociraptor. A popular place to put these is the calves as opposed to the arms I was just wondering if anybody had some good images and ideas for dinosaur tattoos?
  4. I've seen a few of them at college and around town lately and I am wondering if the people know what message that sends? I've always associated the inverted cross with anti-Christianity, Satanism in particular. Until I had read on this message board that people will request "crosses that are facing them" I never thought of that as a reason for having an upside down cross tattoo. The only frame of reference I have for that tattoo would be somebody getting a swastika with the justification that it is for good luck and good health. Maybe they are Buddhist or something? Pretty much nobody is going to see a swastika tattoo and think "good luck charm."
  5. Might be the Whiskey talking here but , 2012 will be the year of the Tiger and Eagle for me yass !! I might get the ribs done definetly getting the other thigh covered . And mibbe something wierd from Ty Mcewan when he coimes back over. Anyone thought abpout what your up for getting next year ??
  6. I didn't see any other thread tackling this...soooo Let's see some of your favorite patriotic tattoo designs.
  7. Hey guys, I make these rad (i think they're rad) hand embroidered things. Hand embroidered means no sewing machine, just me and a needle and some thread. I'd love it if you checked them out! You can see them on my blog www.thread-wizard.com or my Etsy store Thread Wizard by UrsulaThomson on Etsy Also huge thanks to those of you who've bought my stuff online and at conventions! THANKS!
  8. My first idea for a tattoo (at 17) was a tribal scorpion with my birthday worked into it. Needless to say, I'm glad I chose to wait, but I'm still interested in seeing good traditional scorpions, spiders, flies, centipedes, wasps, etc.
  9. This thread idea comes from the "Un-planned Tattoo" thread and a conversation I had the other day while getting tattooed plus my general way of getting tattooed.... As most of my tattoos are impromptu I either have a vague idea of what I want or just want to get tattooed so I show the tattooer the open space and say: "Tattoo what you want" OR I give them a vague idea and say "Do what you want" OR I give them a few vague ideas and say "Your choice" I always end up with something I like and often times a tattoo that goes beyond what I could have drawn up in my head then attempted to dictate back to them my "great idea". Then when they show me and/or have drawn it on me I don't do, 'hey can you fix this" or "how about....." or what ever other thought that has me taking the creative autonomy back from the tattooer. Though from my conversation the other day and observations over the years it seems like more often than not when tattooers get the ol' "Do what you want" the customer ends up changing their minds and/or engaging in a back and forth dialogue on the most minor things. So here are my two questions for tattooers: 1) Do you prefer customers to come in telling you what they want or giving you creative autonomy? 2) How many times is too many for you to have to draw and redraw a design for the customer? Tattoo customers: 1) Do you tell the tattooer what you want or let them have free reign? 2) How interactive are you in the process once you see what they have drawn up?
  10. Today as I am getting ready to go get tattooed(again) I am doing my ritual cut things out size them and see what fits where so that this tattoo doesn't affect my plans for my next tattoo or the one after that. Also I want to make sure I utilize my space in the most efficient manner. I mean I guess the end game for all of this is to be covered, and while I still have my back piece to finish and my ribs, I feel I am running short on spots to just go and get tattooed on a whim or on vacation. Some people I talk to are sick of the pain and ready to be done, others are more frustrated than me because they literally have almost no room to get tattooed and everything they want doesn't fit. Anybody here have any perspective on this?
  11. 2012 is the year of the dragon and after spending the Chinese New Year in Asia I thought it would be pretty cool to get a tattoo momento of the trip. I was looking at getting a dragon in the traditional american style but apart from some sailor jerry flash (which is kickass and I'm leaning towards getting) I can't find many other flash references apart from the odd one or two. Can anybody help me out? Sailor Jerry Col Todd
  12. So I have my appointment coming up soon at Invisible and am getting a traditional(ish) skull. I am still trying to decide what else to add to it. My artist said rose, I said no. I was thinking snake, with possible the skull missing the bottom jaw. Its going to be around 5x5 and my upper thigh. Any ideas? Edit: Wrong section. Mods if you want you can move it.
  13. Sugar skulls appear prominently in Japanese style tattooing, though it seems to be a Mexican thing. Anyone care to shed some light on this? Thanks in advance!
  14. hey there. post rib pieces of yours or some that you think are cool! i have a tiny coverup to do. many possibilities, i'd like to get some ideas flying around. girl? eagle? hmm
  15. So it looks like I have finially decided what to finish my right calf off with. Geometric pattern style stuff. I have been lurking through some Thomas Hooper stuff and similar (propbably going with Hooper). So anyone have any good stuff to post or also what do you guys think for the space I am working with. http://kristiandmaggie.com/k/100_2291.JPG http://kristiandmaggie.com/k/100_2292.JPG please don't mind the werewolf hair or razor cuts (not very experienced at shaving my legs)
  16. With only two months into the year I thought it would be fun to try to do some projections as to what possibly will be this years most popular tattoos after reading Tammy's blog "Tattoo Trends of 2010". Here are my top three 2011 Tattoo Idea guesstamations: 1) Sharks 2) Traditional Tattoo Designs with a nautical/sailor/traveler theme 3) Tattoos of hands in various manners/styles (shaking hands, praying hands, one hand holding a rose, hands doing sign language and gang signs, etc) What are your top three projections?
  17. I'm looking for some inspiration for Japanese-style foot tattoos, ideally with plenty of foot coverage but without being something that really should be bigger, if that makes sense? ie I'm not wanting to squeeze a dragon on there or something. Coverage like this, but other subject ideas and example pics would be appreciated.
  18. Buying a king size print from one of your favorite artists, getting it framed properly, hanging it on your wall and taking two steps back. I´ve been staring at the original hanging by Marius´ station for hours while getting tattooed, so when he decided to make giclee prints of it I had to rape my wallet and buy one. Stoked!
  19. I've got both shins done as of right now and have an appt on the 20th to add a new piece to my leg, the part I'm having trouble with is placement. I know I want it on the inside of my leg on the upper portion of my calf (it's not going to be too big). I guess my concern is having the rest of the tattoos on that leg look to evenly place and not random and it looking kind of dull. Is there a way to go about filling around a shin tattoo or if anyone else started out with a tattoo on your shin, how did you go about filling the rest of your lower leg?
  20. I did this walk-in last night, he wanted a pinup with "some herbage" incorporated into it. I put skin tone in the pinup coming off the black, but it didn't show up in the picture too well. I'm still trying to get my pinup shading on-point, I feel like it's always lacking, but I guess less is more sometimes??
  21. a little panther banger i did on my buddy. its an iphone pic so its not the best quality picture. have at it.
  22. I really didn't know what to post but I wanted to get the ball rolling for me. This was a piece I did last week. My buddy that helps me with my website came to me and wanted something to do with with "Bad Luck Good Speed". It is supposed to be "God Speed" but he didn't want anything religious and he considers himself to live in the fast lane. Haha. Anyways, I had a really hard time trying to think of something to do... what I finally came up with is a horse running away from a nuclear bomb strapped to his back. Kinda saying, you're fucked no matter how fast you run. Anyways... any thoughts, feedback or anything would be tight. Thanks!
  23. Hi Ladies and Gents I am after some help sourcing some ideas and images of the phoenix. I have obviously searched the internet for reference but it just throws up the same half dozen designs. I am really looking for a fantasy type image to go with a dragon face. I prefer the faces on the fantasy phoenix compared to the chicken like ones on other designs. Any help or a point in the right direction for literature/images would be great. Thanking you in advance.
  24. looking for someone on the west coast preferably, as it will be multiple sessions and quite large. i know there's a ship thread in the tattoo designs section but not alot of talk. any push in the right direction or examples in someones portfolio would be appreciated greatly. i love kyle crowells ships, and have been tattooed by him so thats in the back of my mind as of now
  25. I've read a couple threads on the subject of roses and I'm just curious, do you guys feel there's a right or wrong way to draw or tattoo them? I've seen some really in depth roses and then there's the simpler looking traditional ones with less pedal Reason I ask is because I've got a traditional rose on my arm with stem and a girl in class asked me if it was a hibiscus (in a snooty attitude like "whys that on your arm") which I guess it's not a realistic rose, but rather representational which is how the artist put it. I apologize if this is a dumb question or anything.
