  1. Over the years plenty of people come in to the tattoo shop and friendships are bound to develop. I feel like a lot of friends I have started out as customers in the tattoo shop, or me patronizing their business, which is great. We all seem to be able to still do business with one another, with no real issues, because everyone respects the friendship and each others business enough for the two to co exist. On the other hand a person doesn't have to be my best friend to be a good customer. There are plenty of people that come in get tattooed, we have a nice conversation and we never see each other outside of the shop. They show up on time, sometimes even take your design advice. Some people don't say two words and just want to get tattooed, that's cool too. I guess what I am getting at, is there is a group in between that seems to give me the most trouble. People who maybe have a couple tattoos, they really like their tattoos and or the vibe of the shop, and they think because they spent a little money they have achieved VIP status. They will call about coming in on a certain day and not show up, then call the next day and ask if there is any walk in time and not show up again. I won't make appointments over the phone, it's always first come first served, but still it's annoying when people flake. In certain cases I have allowed a person (a friend) to drink a couple beers (2 maybe 3 at most) while getting tattooed, I don't advertise it but if someone asks I am usually okay with it as long as they are of age and take their empties with them. Unfortunately a few people have interpreted this as show up drunk and drink a whole six pack during your tattoo and not be able to sit still and have to pee every five minutes. I am not their mom or their bartender and it's hard to tell a person who is drunk that they are cut off especially mid tattoo. Recently a guy who was tattooed by my boss who pulled the get drunk thing, and a 3 hour tattoo took just under 5 hours to complete. There were a couple spots in the black that needed to be touched up and honestly he didn't get to blend all the colors' in the tiger as he would like to and the guy came in for a touch up, after calling three different times saying he was going to show up, finally showed up three hours later and was really not very pleasant, he expressed he wasn't happy with his tattoo. So my boss took him to the side and explained that he would be happy to sit down and finish the tattoo free of charge, but explained to him that he just became really hard to tattoo while he is drinking and he would need him to not do so in the future while getting tattooed. The guy seemed to understand but then was kind of pissed off because he had to come back in an hour to get it fixed because my boss was in the middle of a walk in tattoo on a friend who didn't keep him waiting for 3 hours. A half hour later he shouted some stuff from the door way about customer service and stormed off in his car with his girlfriend. My boss stopped him in the parking lot and had another talk with him, but he just wanted to talk about how much money he spent and that he deserved to be treated better. I don't know, I think the guy got treated fairly. I am interested in people's thoughts on this. I really everyone to feel at home at the shop, but it seems to me like some ass holes just ruin it for the others.
  2. I have a question about the proper way to go about something, and would like some input. My right arm is about 1/2 covered so far(the bottom 1/2). It was all done by one artist and is actually really nice stuff. I'm wanting to get the arm finished now though. The tattoos that are there already are finished work, I just want to get the rest of the arm covered. I've been going to a different artist recently and I'm curious if I would be an asshole if I had the guy I've been going to recently finish the arm off or should I go back to the guy who did the existing work? I certainly appreciate any input!
  3. Hey everybody, I have a question that may have a simple answer. I'm a black guy and I would love to get some colour in a few of my future pieces but the person who did my first few said that colour will not take to my skin and red would end up turning out like a burnt orange colour. I've done some research online and most things say that it depends on the artist, their skill level and the quality of ink they use. So basically my question is are there any people of colour on here that have colour tattoos or any artists that have done colour tattoos on a coloured person? Also if there is anybody in the Toronto area that could recommend a good artist for the job, if it is in fact possible.
  4. Tattoo stigmas? Do they still exist? Do you have one or some? Have you been on the other side of a stigma? If so, where (city) and what was the stigma?
  5. We have a pretty organized cancellation list at the shop. We don't have tens upon hundreds of walk-ins in a day, 2 at best, and everything else is on appointment; therefore, the cancellation list was built out of necessity to keep people working and on their toes when a no-show or cancellation pops up. Not to mention that people hate waiting for appointments and so to make up for that we are always calling people to fill in spots and avoid appointments like that where necessary. The problem is that it's become almost useless: We statistically can call every person on that list and offer spots - and of course to those people who said they'd drop anything to come in - and they're NEVER available. It becomes a waste of money having my counter staff calling around to hear people incredulously tell them they have to work - as though we are insane for even suggesting they might want this last minute opportunity. Is this the same everywhere? I'm curious if we are just on a year long run of sketch bags!!!!
  6. Always wonder about this and I feel a little silly, but for you heavily tattooed folks out there, any thoughts on the relation of number of tattoos to a weaker immune system? Could be that I'm just getting older, or back behind the bar, or just not taking care of myself like I should be, but it seems in the last year or two I'm getting sick a lot more than usual. Not always knocked on my ass sick, but colds and that kind of thing. Anyone?
  7. Couldn't find a thread that quite fit this topic so thought I would throw it up here for discussion... My last couple of experiences have been with walk-in-loving street shops that employ several great artists. At each shop, I've gone in with the hope of being tattooed by a particular artist, but I've ended up being tattooed by someone different than I had originally gone into the shop to see. In both instances, I went to the shop and looked through the flash while trying to get a "feel" for the shop and looking at portfolios and seeing who I think might be most adept at doing the sort of tattoo I want. While there, I witnessed these two artists (both at different shops, mind you) acting like complete jackasses and generally giving me a really uncool vibe. I ended up going with a different artist, in each case a highly competent and great tattooer but one whose portfolio and style I liked ever so slightly less just because I didn't want to get a (maybe) slightly better tattoo but have a bad experience that I will remember that tattoo by. Thus, do you think personality of a tattooer matters? If someone has a reputation as an impeccable artist but a total asshole (not just "gruff" or whatever, like that story about Scott going to Bob Roberts' shop and being bounced right the fuck out, but just an overall douche) would you want work done by them? If you're straight edge would you get tattooed by a great artist who also happens to be a drunk or drug user (not sure how often these categories overlap, but, hey!)? Does the final product outweigh the experience of getting the tattoo put on? Any other factors you consider outside of the finished product when choosing a tattooer?
  8. So about a year and a half ago I started getting my ribs done at a local shop here in MD(I'll attach a pic). The guy who started the piece is the shops owner and we developed a pretty good rapport over the sessions that I had. The last session I had was an appointment that was schedueled for 12 noon I arrived at 11:30. He didn't start working on me until 9 PM. That is the last time that I have had any work done on my piece. I should interrupt here and add that I was in the military at the time which the artist knew so I wasn't home for almost a year. This guy was always a little flaky to begin with he had lots of problems that would delay him working (read he does lots of drugs). Classic example the day that it took him almost 9 hours to start after the appointed time he said his teeth hurt and he had to run out and get some "medicine". Anyway now a year and a half later I can't get in touch with this guy I have called the shop and left messages I have gone in there and waited 2 hours to see him and nothing. I'm not bitter about him being busy that's inderstandable I'm bitter because I want to finish my ribs and he blew me off to draw a butterfly on some sorostitutes ankle. This is a shop where I have spent almost $2000 on work and this guy won't give me the time of day. Everyone who used to work at the shop has been fired or quit because they were tired of dealing with the owner. Wow this has become long and kind of a long rant but I wanted you guys to know where I was coming from on this. Anyway if anybody has bothered to read this far I guess my real dilemma/question is "When is it acceptable to find a new artist to finish my work?" Also for all of you who are artists how would you feel if someone finished one of your pieces without you? Thank you all in advance for your responses and Happy 4th of July! Matt
  9. Every time I watch the movie Eastern Promises or see and flip through one of the various Russian Criminal Tattoo books (Volume I, Volume II, or the newer one Volume III) I am reminded of the beauty, significances, true tattoo stories, and rawness of these tattoos. There's a neighborhood in San Francisco were I used to spend some time in regularly drinking coffee and eating pastries when on some lucky occasions I would get to bear witness to one or some of these historically rich tattoos. On only a few occasions the individuals would see me checking out there tattoos and would notice mine so conversations would follow or they would see me looking at theirs notice mine and give me a nod. The few stories I've gotten to hear were amazing and I can only imagine they were censored for my ears. The combinations of religious and spiritual imagery mixed with deeper unique meanings I can never get enough of. So this thread is a place to share your Russian Tattoo Designs, pictures, and stories. I have attached some images I got off of the internet because I have never felt right asking those I've seen with these tattoos for pictures, go figure. Thanks! 10. Maybe I am missing something obvious (I'm not the sharpest crayon in the box) but I notice in Denver no shops take credit cards. This doesnt really effect me as I have always paid cash...but I just wondered if there was a reason...
  11. There is a lot of talking about tattooing and more about "the art of tattooing".Sometimes it seems like tattooing is somehow an "academical" art (sorry if my english are not excellent) and a lot are told about the design-the "piece of art".I consider tattooing somehow more technical than artistic and respecting the rule that the tattoo has to live through time the better possible i feel that i cant break some "red lines" which is the outline, the scale, the use of black color a lot and a lot more. I think there is not a lot of talking about this and a lot of tattooers puts art above tattooing..
  12. So - here's my dilemma. My goal is "squid pants". And I honestly don't really care much what all goes into them. I have a (short) list of things that I don't want... but otherwise I care more about just having good looking work on me. I want "fancy" legs. That's it. So how do I convey this to potential tattooers without sounding like a total flake? I worry that if I say "I don't care, do whatever you want, except for "x" things" they'll brush me off as someone who is in it just for some kind of status thing or something... which isn't the case at all. It's VERY personal to me. It's just that I'm not attached to any specific imagery. I don't want to "overshare" with my tale of woe about why exactly I need fancy legs... but I don't want to get written off either... Any advice?
  13. OK this has happened only a couple times, but I have had people that won't take ink during the tattooing process. Its like there skin just won't be tattooed. I'll change inks needles machines voltage nothing works. Anyone else have this problem and anyone know why this happens.
  14. A thought which I often think about then over the past twenty-fours hours have been really thinking about due to Tattoo Dex and her viral video of the 152 facebook friend tattoo sleeve is tattooers with little to no tattoos. I think this is a heavy weight for me on whether or not I would get tattooed by someone. I'm not saying they need to have hands, fingers, neck, face, head, etc but at least some good visible tattoos for me to know they get it. Or I don't know if "get it" is the right word but they have taken the time to get good tattoos and can do good tattoos. They have done and are doing their time It is like many of the tattooers on here have said over and over again to those interested in getting into tattooing "get tattooed by good tattooers". Plus the million other suggestions and deterrents they have said but anywho.......Would you get or have you been tattooed by a tattooer with little to no tattoos? Thoughts? Experiences? Also here's the video if you missed it in our other thread:
  15. Haven't been around for a while as I don't have regular Internet access, but I had a quick question... I've heard and read tons of info on tattooing over scars, and the results of. My question is sort of the opposite. I'm hoping to do a full chest piece over the next month or two, and I'm quite excited for it. My only concern is that at some point in the next 5 years or so, I will be having heart surgery, replacing the valves due to a lifelong condition. When they do the surgery, chances are (as I understand it) very low that it will be an open heart surgery similar to the one I had as a child, but if that did happen what effect would it have on the tattoo? I realize it will mess it up considerably, but does anyone know if it would leave fresh, skin toned scar tissue that could eventually be touched up, or will it just be a jumbled mess of ink? Does anyone have experience with scarring over tattoos, either by surgery or accident or anything? I've never heard anything about it, but I'm certainly not the most educated tattoo wise, being from a small redneck town... I realize the best possible idea would be to wait until after the surgery, but the chances of having open heart as opposed to the surgery done by camera (laparoscopic?) is very low, and I'm mostly just asking out of curiosity rather than concern... Thanks for any and all input/advice
  16. Over the last few months, I've been trying to get a hold of a few tattooers via email. The problem is that I have yet to get a response from anyone. I'm trying pretty hard to be patient, but in some cases it's been two months or more. Does anyone else have this issue? Long story short, I'm just looking for some advice. Maybe, I'm not emailing the wrong information or asking the wrong questions? What's the protocol?
  17. Happy 4th y'all...today I decided to take out the bike out for afternoon ride...and saw that a local tattoo shop was open...i stopped by the other evening and saw that they were looking for an artist and a piercer...so tonight i decided to roll on up and check out this local shop...they happened to be having a july 4th barb-q in the works...so fun and festivities were in the works...I walked in and asked if i could check out the shop and look at their books...the woman was polite and said yes...but i could tell i was getting a lil mean mugging thrown my way...its all good...she asked questions and i broke down my lil back story...she went with the usual your really need to be working out of a shop...no argument on my part...after i looked through the books i said i would love to come back and maybe get some work done...and said i planned on getting work from a number of people and said it gives me a chance to learn...then all of sudden she flipped on me and said there is no way i would ever tattoo you if your trying to learn something from me...knowing that now she said i wouldn't ever tattoo you...wow that is oddest customer service response...I smiled and said that is fine...no worries I'll get it from someone else...then she slammed me and said i knew you were some home scratcher the moment you pulled up...what gave it away?...silly woman i learned everything I needed to know in that short visit and I learned that there is nothing left to learn from that shop...c'est la vie...
  18. So I have only been out of apprentice status for just under two years. I knew eventually I would come across this situation but my solution did not play out as I thought it would. So this dude comes in the shop covered in prison tattoos, for the most part they were actually done well. So we get to talking and he said his reason for coming in is to have some things redone, just gone over he says "brighten them up" I believe is the term he used. So I ask to see what he wants done. The first one is an old Cleveland radio station logo, the other is an iron cross with a giant blazing red swastika in the center. Now our shop is in the hood, so it took balls for him to even walk in there. My solution for this problem in my head was to quote a high price in hopes they would walk away. If it is not already apparent, I don't want to do this tattoo, strictly based on the content, and a promise I made to my self to never do anything overtly hateful that may have a negative impact on the client or others they may see it. So my query is if I refuse to do it I am refusing to do my job, which he is allowed to be mad at me about because I am condemning him for his beliefs. I am not there to judge I am there to provide tattoos. O, I forgot to mention, he accepted the price on the count that the shop he was at just before quoted him even higher than I did and said he would come and see me Saturday. That's today, shit.
  19. I have booked the flight and I am currently booking appointments with the artists who I want to get tattooed by in the bay area. So, is there anything I should try to see or do while visiting? I know there are many SF residents on this board, so I'm hoping you guys can give me some tips. I'm visiting the third week of September by the way.
  20. I received an email the other day from a publicist trying to get the tattooer she represents on OV. Does that strike anyone as odd? I mean, the guy looks like he's a pretty good tattooer, but the weird impersonal nature of it had me scratching my head. That a tattooer has a publicist had me scratching my head. I guess it's a logical extension of the way tattooing is evolving from craft to 'high art' but... very strange to me.
  21. Ok so maybe I'm just a little self-conscience about this. But I got this tattoo back in January and I get a lot of compliments on it. But lately for some reason when I look at it sometimes I wonder if it's like a tattoo you see on someone else and your like 'that looks really bad, I wouldn't go to that artist.' I don't know what it is. To me it kind of looks blotchy, like it's just there, especially in the sun light.. Maybe it's because my skin is so pale. What do you guys think? Do I need to get it touched up or something?
  22. Hello everyone! Hope everyones weekend went well. I was wondering if lines can appear to be crooked or not completely straight if it is scabbing right near the line work? I got the coloring finished and a little spot scabbed up but the rest is already finished peeling. The spot where it scabbed is under a line and makes it crooked. I dont know if its just because the scab is tightening my skin and making it appear this way or what! Will it stay this way making it have to be touched up? Thanks everyone!!! Cheers!
  23. Some what empty of an idea so far, but my next tattoo is going to go on my forearm. And I was thinking of a cardinal, or some sort of bird in flight. I would like for it to be a tad traditional looking when it comes to shading, and the feathering & all but still hold its own when it comes to being a bird tattoo. What I'm asking, so that I can draw it out myself and present it to the tattoo artist I may go to (don't worry, I'll be getting their exact opinion on what I've posted now), in your opinion what may be the best positioning for this? The size I was thinking would probably be at least 6 in.
  24. What's up everyone. I've finally raised enough money to get my next tattoo. I already have a.. vague idea of what I want & the placement of said tattoo. What I've been wanting is the word rejoice, inside some sort of banner & that banner being wrapped around something. Also, the placement of this tat is going on my upper forearm, below my bicep. Anyone have any good advice/ ideas I can throw around & brain storm with? Would be truly appreciated, along with every other type of kindness I can spew at you guys. Ask me questions if that helps you get an idea, personal or not, I'll answer it proudly. Thanks!
