  1. I am very curious to hear peoples stories of how you told your parents about your first tattoo. where they mad, accepting, do they not know, whats the deal? please share your stories whether they be funny, sad, harsh or stupid! were you old enough that your parent influence didnt matter? do you still hide them to this day?
  2. The who, what, where, when, and why of your first tattoo with a picture pls?!?
  3. Hey everyone! I'm a 20 year old college student just looking to talk tattoos with someone every now and again. I have one tattoo, and it's only 4 days old! In two weeks I'll be getting my second one, and I'm super excited. I hope you folks don't mind answering a couple questions I have regarding my tattoo. First, I notice a bit of blowout. I was wondering if a little bit of blowout is normal, and if it will go away. Secondly, I was not instructed to wrap it every day, so I have not been doing that. I have been, however, washing it and applying a bit of lotion on it twice a day. I want to know if I'll be alright just doing that, or if I need to take other measures as far as aftercare goes. I'll provide photos :) Let me know what you all think! Thanx!
  4. We found LST and now get good tattoos but what before? We must of got some bad tattoos on the way.... Here we can post our bad tattoos and the story behind them I'll start with one of mine, done when I was 16 some 22 years ago, even when new people asked what it was, it's a bat moon and 3 stars by the way...!
  5. Hey guys! I am excited to join the sparrow community. I am looking forward to getting my first tattoo but need some advice from more experienced people. First, I need some ideas on my design. I want to get something that has to do with music. I want it to be original and good, that's why I am seeking help. I love all types of music but mainly electronic music. I also want to get an owl so it would be really awesome to have those two combined (i'm a guy so nothing girly). Second, where is a good place for it? I want it about the size of an adult palm and to be able to hide it. I was thinking of getting it on my upper back but i have acne marks/scars. Would that be a problem? Thanks a lot for taking your time to read this. I can't wait to see what you guys have in mind.
  6. Hello everyone I'm considering on getting my first tattoo pretty soon. I want to get it on my upper right arm or behind my right shoulder. I work out, and I'm still a bit small in arm size since I'm kind of a small guy. And I have heard from people that once you get your tattoo depending where it is it can get morphed because of stretching, gaining weight, etc. But is any of that true? Haha, I want to get a tattoo and continue to work out and get my arms bigger, would it be a bad idea and mess up how my tattoo ends up looking after I get it and a few months of the gym?
  7. Hey, guys. My name is Bonnie and I am from the mississippi gulf coast. I am currently going to school for chemistry. A few years ago I determined that I needed to get some art on my back. After years of deliberating, I've decided on a full japanese style back piece. I'm starting it in a week in Nola! My family thinks I'm crazy for choosing such a large tattoo for my first, but it just feels right. (Don't know how long it will feel right once the needle is going across my skin, haha). Anyways, I came across this site looking for advice and saw that everyone posting seemed really lovely and friendly. I'm looking forward to talking to folks. I'm pretty nervous so advice and words of encouragement are always appreciated!
  8. My name is Ashley, and as you can see I'm very new here. After years of vowing to never get a tattoo, a simple conversation with a friend about what kind of tattoo I would get if I ever did get one has now sparked interest in me. Six months later and the idea has grown on me so much that I hope to have my first tattoo by the end of February. I joined this forum to poke around and get some insight from others about getting your first tattoo. I'm a little nervous, but not because of the pain. I'm more concerned about how my family will react, as tattoos are considered to be taboo in my family. I'm about to turn 19 and would be paying for the piece myself, but I've yet to figure out a way to tell my family about the tattoo once I've got it. I've researched tattoo parlors in my area, and after looking at a few pieces that my friends have by different artists, have chosen the place I want to get it done. Now all that is left is to make the appointment and save the money!
  9. Hello. I'm lostvaletines. I'm new to tattoos in general. I've been wanting one for a long time (currently 22yrs old) but haven't been able to find or draw anything I want on my body forever until recently. So, I would like to get the Kingdom of Prussia eagle. This is what it looks like http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b9/Flag_of_Prussia_1892-1918.svg I would get it done in all black as I am very pale and love the contrast that would have. I know it would be beautiful. I know it isn't really something a lot of people would know about, but my concern is that they may mistake it for the eagle used by the Nazi party (google it if you don't know what it looks like). Also a concern is that I plan to travel to the germany/austria area in the next few years and I don't know if it would go over well (even if they recognize it as Prussian). Yeah, so I would love everyone's opinions/comments about this. Any questions, just ask.
  10. Hey, I'm Elia. I live in Ontario, Canada. I'm 17 years old (almost 18) and I'm interested in getting my first tattoo. Don't worry, I don't actually have the money yet to get a quality one, so I've been thinking about it for a while.
  11. The who, what, where, when, and why of your first tattoo? Pls include a picture if possible as we would love to see it!
  12. Hello Last Sparrow members! I'm an 18 year old high school senior (for 45 more days...) considering getting a subtle, simple line tattoo of a dove flying away from a cage (for both emotional and spiritual reasons). I'm not completely sure that I will yet for a few reasons, some of which I was hoping this forum could help me with. The first is that I am fairly straight-laced. I've been in choirs most of my life, high academic achiever, etc. While I recognize that having a tattoo does not change that fact, I can't help but worry that it might lead people to stereotype me and treat me differently. For the most part I care very little about what people think of me *once they've gotten to know me* (I tend to be somewhat blunt and outspoken, and if they don't like me for that, that's fine) however I don't want to be prevented from developing relationships with people simply because they hold different ideas about tattoos and the people who get them than I do and misjudge me off the bat as a result. This is especially a concern as i'll be going to college soon, and will be making first impressions left and right. I also don't want to be limited in my career options. My tentitive plan for the future is to work for an organization like World Vision or some similar charity group that really helps empower poor communities to break the cycle of poverty. I would hate to be passed over and lose he opportunity to help others simply because my self-expression gave the wrong impression, especially in faith-driven organizations. (While I do not see the Bible as condemning tattoos, I respect others' right to that opinion, just as I wish them to respect mine.) Any advice and/or experience with this? Perhaps where I can place the tattoo where I can see it (since it's more for me than others, and I'd like to be able to see it easily) but where it can easily be covered up or just not very visible to others? I considered getting it in white ink, but since that seems to be something most artists are inexperienced with and can't guarentee, I've decided against it. Is there a particular color ink that is more subtle? Light gray, perhaps? The last qualm I have is that, being so straight-laced, I have no friends with tattoo experience, and, therefore, no idea where I should go or what I should ask if/when i were to get this tattoo. Granted, it'd be a simple enough design, but since tattoos are so permenent, I don't want to risk allergy/infection/generally crappy artwork. Any advice for an ignorant and nervous first-timer?
  13. How did/do you choose your first tattoo(s)? What did it mean to you. Are you happy with it or would you do it differently today? Can we see a picture and hear the story that assisted you in placing it on your body?
  14. Hello! So this is my second intro post, but ive taken my original idea and reworked it, Just would like some feedback. Basically, the body drawings are rough sketches, of course the feathers would be done better and the little girl would look more like the one in the pic with the long quote. The quote ive shortened to "happiness is not the absence of struggle". There's a ton of meaning behind every inch of this design and I could explain it, but really im just looking for feedback on the tattoo aesthetically. Im planning on keeping it all black ink, but if you think colour would look nice somewhere, let me know! This will be my first tattoo so all the feedback is appreciated greatly. Keep in mind these are rough sketches and my artist (who I met today!! :D ) will be drawing it out more nicely. Im likely going to have to break it up into pieces and do it over the course of the year because of cost, opposed to squeezing it into a month or two. As far as pricing goes, what do you guys think? I just want to get a few more quotes before I commit to this shop. Thanks a million! cant get photos to upload on post.. check out my gallery :)
  15. So I joined the forum to learn more about others opinions and hopefully learn some new information too. I recently got my first tattoo in early December and I couldn't be happier about it! Maori tribals wrapped around my wrist like a wristband. I feel like it should be the base piece of what will eventually grow into a full arm to chest tattoo? Ill post a couple pics and hopefully you guys can give me some suggestions! Thanks so much guys!
  16. I'm getting a lady head tattoo in January, and I've been of the mind to get it on my rib cage. The more I read and hear, the more uneasy I get about that location. I'm not worried about the discomfort, so much as I am the supposed difficulty in tattooing on that area. Is that a legitimate concern, or should a good artist be able to do the same quality of work on my rib cage as he would on my calf or arm? I haven't talked to my artist yet - just thought I would get some feedback on here until I speak with him. In thinking about other location choices, I want this tattoo to be concealed most of the time...especially at work. Don't want back, arm, thigh. Only other options I would consider would be chest or lower leg. If the artist has no qualms, is there any reason I should be hesitant about going with rib cage?
  17. Im new here and im hoping to get all kinds of great advice because im diving in Saturday and getting my FIRST tattoo!! Im scared, nervous and a giant chicken but i really want it! I want to get "Be Still" on my left wrist. (am i crazy for my wrist being first?) Be Still has meaning to me. Its from Exodus 14:14 and Psalm 46:10. Ill take ANY advice you have or suggestions! Lay it on me. Should I get it on my wrist? What should I expect for healing time (with normal healing and after care)?
  18. I'm really diggin' this design (attached), especially in this spot. Hard to describe. Not exactly the inner bicep or the outer bicep so I'll just call it the "front bicep." Basically it would be visible best when facing me. I've seen this placement on a few people. What do you guys think about the piece and the placement? Pros and cons?
  19. So I moved out to Cali about 6 months ago. Never got a tattoo before, not because I didn't want one but because I thought I would never something perfect enough. Well, it didn't take long for me to get bit with the bug seeing all the great work on people out here. I immediately started doing some research on different artists/styles. I grew up in an Asian family around lots of images of Koi, Samurai, Dragons, etc. so naturally the Japanese/Irezumi style was attractive to me. I especially felt that the symbolism of the Koi suited me and what I represent. After narrowing it down to an artist, and with an idea of what I wanted I booked an appointment back in October and within a few weeks got inked. The whole experience was terrible! I felt I was pretty clear with the artist about what I wanted but I also wanted to give him some creative freedom as I feel you should with experience artists who put out great work (at least in their portfolios). I suppose him not wanting to do an actual sketch should have been a red flag. He just wanted to draw it on me first. Anyway, what he drew on me was just an outline, which I had no problem with, but the end product was a Koi with scales that are too small, not running in the direction of the spine, the fins look bad, it's just a mess. It wasn't 2 days and I was already looking into removal. In fact, I've already had one session (after waiting one month). I guess fortunately for me it's just an outline so that's less to get removed but I'm still pretty distraught about what's on my arm and pretty embarrassed by it. I'm encouraged to read that people are able to get cover ups after doing some laser sessions so hopefully I'm not stuck with it for life. It just sucks because I got a good eye for good work and feel I have good taste in tattoos, but you would think I'm some idiot who hired a scratcher if you saw it. I don't regret getting a tattoo, in fact I still have some work I want to get done. I am, however, more nervous than ever that it could happen again. I still don't know what I could have done differently. I guess the second I thought this guy was a bit of an asshole I should have ran.
  20. The who, what, where, when, and why of your latest tattoo? Picture too pls!
  21. Lets see if this works..... I have been thinking a lot about some conversations I've been having with several tattooers around the first tattoo they tattooed on a paying customer and seen some of their pictures.....so lets hear them and if you've got pics and wouldn't mind please share
  22. Hi, I just registered to this forum so that I could get some ideas for my first tattoo. I've always wanted a tattoo and I've always admired a well-thought out and well-planned tattoo. My friends have always affectionately addressed me as "Goose" and I hope to represent that in my tattoo. I'm very close to my friends and my family and I was hoping to incorporate that into the design as I am leaving for college at the close of this coming year. I've struggled to come up with a 'classy' design - one that is not a clique or tacky in anyway. My initial idea is to have a tattoo that I can add to over time, that will develop as I do through college and the challenges ahead. I had an idea for a design on the palm-side up lower arm right where you could put a sweatband(?) and I would box off three sections around the arm. Over time I would hope to fill this boxes with a representation like the one I plan to begin it with. -I was thinking something with a Goose on the bottom looking up towards the sky up towards geese flying in a V with one missing. -As far as style goes, I would like in more of a 17th-18th century scientific drawings style. Like a sketch that an explorer or a scientist would draw of seeing a goose in the new world. As far as you guys go, I'd like some feedback and suggestions, criticisms and advice :{D Thanks very much - HonkItsAGoose
  23. Not neccessarily the first zap you got, because I am sure I'm not the only one here who couldnt or didnt get one the first time they went in a shop. My friend took me to a Peter Tat2 on Long Island in '90, where she had got a dragon around her thigh and was going back for a consultation for her next one. There were 2 people working when I went in; where my friend introduced me to Eddie & Alex. Eddie was working on the most amazing thing I had seen in my life up to that point; a entire ride/side panel of a crawling tiger that is still to this day indescribably awesome. What I saw there was worlds above the average crap I saw on all my punk & skinhead friends. Alex was the hottest woman I had ever seen. Not just because she was a cool punkish sorta chick with cool tats, but she was really beautiful. We chatted for a while, and by sheer coincidence, they had just moved up to LI from Baltimore, which was where I was headed in less than a month to go to school there. Excellent first time impression. At that time I did not realize that not all tattoo artists were so awesome and talented. Being 17 and broke I wasnt able to get a tattoo, but I was hooked instantly. A year or 2 later I find out through a tattootime book who they actually were and it boggled my mind that I had met 2 serious heavy hitters and had just assumed they were regular tat folk.
  24. I did a lot of shopping for an artists work I like. We spent about 10 minutes discussing the design I am interested in. The design isnt crazy. But I am curious to see how he is going to lay out the nebula I am looking for. I am NOT an artist. I picked this guy because I love his work. I made my appointments in April. My first appointment is June 6th. My question is...is it appropriate to stop into the shop and discuss my design with him again before my first appointment? I thought I could swing by when he has a bit of downtime and bring in a small gift or something (like a decent bottle of tequila or something). I guess I dont want him to forget what we discussed...on the other hand...I dont want to be "that guy". I dont want to be a pain in the ass. Thanks.
