  1. In my opinion everyone that belongs to a particular subculture fall into some kind of mold. How many girls in longbeach have that rockabilly style with greaser boyfriends that cruise hotrods, how many tattooers you see with long beards, how many suburban kids in orange county dress like cholos from the 80's, have many gangbangers in southcentral have shaved heads, wear raider jerseys with houseshoes, how many hairdresser chicks at the burgandy room have tattoos of shears and roses, how many punks have mohawks, how many skinheads wear fred perry shit, how many douchebags wear tapout shit? Hipsters are just an easy and fun target but you name it and there is a stereotypical look to it. It's basic group behavior.

  5. I went to eagle river! More like passed through. Got a 40oz from the grocery store and kept moving north. And, yeah, for sure saw the giant tat machine on the roof. Does it light up?
  6. Cheers. I know your work. In fact, I was recently in Alaska, as part of a hitchiking trip through the Yukon, passed by Anchorage Tattoo Studio, and thought about going in and checking it out, but the place was closed.
  7. I find myself liking tattoos that are bad more than tattoos that are good. Handpoked stuff (Fuk it, Michelles A Bitch), weed leaves, reapers, decks of cards, wolves. Stuff like that. Names. Punkrock stuff. Poorly rendered, badly healed, impulsive physical graffiti. I think it says more about a person that really deeply considered, high end tattoos. I think tattoos have become so good that its refreshing to see someone sporting really shitty homemade stuff. Catches my eye.
  8. That's Jun Cha tackin. Jun Cha I love how he has the big M on the setup for reference. Ha ha. Not real.
  9. Jack Rudy will do it, but its usually his initials hidden somewhere in the tattoo, usually in the smoke curls. Or a little copyright C.
  10. Post images of things and people that you find rad, gnarly, far-out or inspirational. I'll go first... [images removed after they became broken..]
  11. What do you like to listen to when you get tacked, or are tattooing? I'm into some slow sleepy metal. I dunno why, it's not my genre of choice usually, but it somehow just makes sense around tattoos... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWHplp10kQM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdKZVN_1V3I http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ICzXDyEt0k http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_45E4xknkc
  12. I got the thumbs done later and it wasn't as bad for some reason. It was more the other fingers. Spicy.
  13. I thought the palm was really easy. I mean, it hurt, but it wasn't as bad as I thought. For me, tattoos hurt much worse as they go on. As long as it's pretty quick, I can deal with it. Throat hurt, but that was more the actual position of being tattooed, head hanging off the table. I'd get dizzy and nauseous. It took about 12 hours to get it all in there. Really hard work, for both me and my artist. It's the only tattoo where I ever seriously considered tapping out and coming back later. The white highlights at the very end were just torture. Top of the head hurts a lot. Starts painful and only gets worse. The most painful, by far, for me, was the ends of my fingers, just under the cuticle. It felt like someone was searing hot pokers into the ends of my fingers. Intense, serious pain.
  14. Anytime I see someone with an old tattoo, I ask to see it, and talk to them about the background of that tattoo. I'm working on documenting old prison and homemade tattoos in Los Angeles.
  15. Off the top of my head, Tim Hendricks, Jack Rudy, Ben Grillo, Cerretelli, Jose Lopez, Adam Warmerdam...probably some others I'm forgetting... Girlheads for days.
  16. Robert Atkinson is the fastest tattooer I have ever seen. Rick Walters is pretty quick too, as is Richard Stell, and the aforementioned Filip.
  17. Mike Brown, Skin Deep tattoo, Hawaii. Perfect, simple, readable lettering. Nails it every time. Not too much and not too little. Just right.
