  1. Yes indeed @jimmyirish my back is by Ian Flower, as is my Dragon-carp half sleeve and the grammophone on my ribs. I think both are up in my gallery. The thing that's super cool about the way Ian works is just how little he stencils. For instance in my back he stenciled a basic outline for the dragon's head, the skull and the cherry blossoms. Everything else was drawn on and he would work on a different section of the outline each session. He used to work in London but for various reasons didn't want to anymore so moved out to Surrey. As you say though, nice guy, and he has a huge amount of experience and knows exactly what's going on.
  2. We keep going back and forth on it. We've talked about blue, green and golden but it changes every time we talk about it. Basically I think we'll end up making it up. Whatever we choose it isn't going to be your classic black and grey with red and yellow. Honestly I'm quite excited that we're improvising as we go along.
  3. Thanks a lot. It's healing up really well and I can't wait til July to hopefully finish the top of the skull and then go in to some more colour.
  4. Hello all, So I haven't put up any progress shots on my back for a couple of months. In all honesty it was a lot of cherry blossoms. Anyway after the weekends session at the Bristol Tattoo Show I thought I better put up a full progress shot. Apologies for the slightly blurry pictures these were taken with my slightly rubbish little compact digital camera. I'm stoked with how it is coming along though now and am super excited to see it coming together with the colour in the dragon over the next few months.
  5. Just had a great weekend at the Bristol Tattoo Convention. Thoroughly recommend it to anyone interested in quality tattoos next year. Awesome list of great artists, well organised and everything focused on tattooing without the extra stuff that comes along with some conventions these days. The result of the weekend for me was not only did Ian Flower do another few hours on my back piece, but I also got a cool little gap filler from Duncan X on my shin. Gotta love an Ichthyosaur. We will finish the colour in the Tibetan skull during my next session in July. It's exciting to see more and more colour going in.
  6. Honestly it wasn't all that bad. I probably could have gone for another hour. I will post a picture later today how it came out. Nice work on the Doc Martens as well. Do you know what you won?
  7. Oh nice. That girl head looked super clean and classic. We did about 4.5 hours worth of work in the end . I spent most of time trying to stay relaxed, so I guess in that regard I was pretty involved.
  8. Excellent. Which piece was yours @OutOfIdeas ? I saw all of Marcus work today as I was having the Tibetan skull tattooed on my ass right next to him. You're right though it was a great show.
  9. There is some really nice work in this thread. I've been meaning to put some of my paintings and drawings up. So here is a small selection of what I do. Enjoy and if you want to see a bit more of what I do then go to my instagram @mr_toby_s
  10. Once again I will be there at points throughout the whole weekend.
  11. Yeah I'm gonna be there both days. Getting my monthly session done on my back by Ian Flower on the second day. It definitely looks like a really exciting show though.
  12. When it came to me planning my back piece my thoughts were quite simple. I want one and I want it to be big. The result is that I have a full Japanese back piece in progress. With this as an on going project I have been a little aware of the possibility of spots especially across the top of it as I can get some big spots on my shoulders. The way I have approached it has been the same as the healing process for a new tattoo... whatever happens don`t pick the spots... All that's gonna do is make any damage worse. So far this has served me well. With regards to combining a back piece with existing tattoos I feel it is something that happens pretty frequently and a good artist will be able to balance and work with what is already there and make it look good. And certainly there is no necessity to expand a back piece in to a full suite. Mine stops half way across my ribs and doesn't look strange or unusual. In fact it is quite a traditional Japanese design to stop with an almost straight line running down either side of the body. My advice would simply be find a subject matter you like and and an artist you want to work with and just go and speak to them. Simple as that.
  13. This is a cool thread. Lots of really good tattoos. My contribution is as follows... Cross with Koru designs by Tommy Downs at Roger's Tattoo Art in Wellington, NZ. That is surrounded by a half sleeve by Gerry Carnelly at Octopus Tattoo, Derby, UK. The second piece then is a dotwork Aum gap filler by Patrick Huttlinger going in the little gap left by a half sleeve by Ian Flower at New Skool Tattoos in Ewell village, Surrey, UK. I really like that the combination balances the two arms. When I had the gaps it felt totally unbalanced. I agree with the earlier comment though about not having to tattoo that part of my body again. The cross was my first ever tattoo and not the most pleasant introduction to say the least...
  14. I always look forward to the start of the month because it means another 3 hours of work on my back, and another step closer to completion. This session I just could not zone out at all. The whole thing just hurt. On the other hand we have now basically finished the background and I'm stoked with how it's looking.
  15. Fantastic weekend at the Brighton Tattoo Convention and I got this new hannya and snake by Ade from Axios Tattoo alongside a bunch of books, prints and paintings. All in all a very successful weekend.
  16. So it's been a couple of months since I last updated the progress on my back. The shading sessions are just so much nicer for me than the outline. I think I May have even fallen asleep at points during the session in January. There was no chance of that this week though as the studio was pretty cold despite the heater just next to the bench. I ended up putting half my jacket back on the side that wasn't getting tattooed. Anyway enough rambling this is how it is looking now: p.s. @SeeSea your back piece has come out great. Congratulations.
  17. It's very interesting reading everyone's responses. Thanks to everyone for getting involved. I was never under any pretence that a traditional eagle was a remarkable new idea and I knew full well that Bert's version comes from a long history of traditional flash. As a result of that I certainly don't begrudge anyone for getting one. I'm sure in fact that there are plenty hidden amongst these forums and galleries. On reflection, and after a bit of common sense, the similarity between the two eagles is not something that worries me that much. I really like mine and will continue to get a lot of pleasure from it. I do however think the issue of copying will be something that keeps raising it's head in this art form we all love, and that's something that it would be interesting to keep hearing people's thoughts on.
  18. Yeah you're probably right. It was just a bit of a surprise to find one looking so similar.
  19. So it's a very simple question: How would you react if you found that what you thought was a custom tattoo just for you had been copied? I'll explain. At the 2013 London Convention I got an eagle tattooed on my ankle from Bert Krak (I've included a picture of it below from when it was just finished. It's the one with a bit of colour in it). I love the tattoo and was stoked to have Bert do it for me. A couple of days ago then when I was flicking through facebook what should appear before me but my very own eagle on someone else's arm just in black and grey (Picture also included below). How would you react? I can't decide whether I should be angry about this that someone has basically been a bit lazy and copied the tattoo that Bert customised just for me, or whether I should be flattered that someone thought it was so good that they wanted it themselves as well? How would you react?
  20. So we have finally started the shading on my back piece. It's a great feeling to be filling in all those lines. There's a long way to go but here is a picture of the first bit of shading we have done on the back of my leg.
  21. Ah if only I was that technologically advanced. I can set up a camera and tripod but I feel using a webcam effectively would defeat me. I may just have to buy more mirrors. While I am here as well, @Graeme your back is looking amazing. It's gonna look seriously powerful when it's finished. And I know what you mean about the love handles being a crap spot. I am not looking forward to filling in those spots. The line work going over them was bad enough.
  22. Thanks to @Mush @marley mission @9Years @DeathB4Decaf and @Cork as I say I a really happy with all the line work. Definitely worth going through 15hours to get it looking like this, but the word bananas does some it up pretty nicely. 6th December will bring the first session on the shading. I can't wait to see it keep developing now. It feels like it is now really gonna start coming to life a little bit at a time.
  23. As promised I have now managed to get some pictures of my fully outlined back. I never imagined it would be so many lines when I started but after 5 sessions and 15 hours in total we have completed the first stage. Very happy with it and can't find enough mirrors to look at all the detail.
  24. Had the final session of outlining on my back today. Another 3 hours taking the total to 15 hours just on the outline. I definitely feel like it has taken a while but I am very happy to be moving on to some shading next month. The backs of my legs are less happy that I am currently sitting down to write this. I will post some pictures of the final outline in a few days once it has settled a bit. In the mean time I can say that I am very happy with it.
  25. @ironchef your back is looking insane! Very impressed indeed, and the finish line is in sight. It makes me very excited to finish the linework on my back this Saturday so we can then move on to some shading in December. But for now definitely a huge congrats on what is going to be a great piece.
