  1. Feel better Jolly? Sounds like you've wanted to say that for a while now. You had me thinking about a shop in Augusta. The owner doesn't tattoo, but her son does. He's not very good either. He thinks he's all that and a bag of chips though. The owner completely bombarded the radio and tv with ads and discounts and give aways of all kinds. She did have some great artist working for her until they got fed up and left opening their own shop across the street. She wouldn't hire anyone that wasn't tattooing for less than 10yrs and wouldn't let any new apprentice in unless they had a assoc degree in art. Now that shop is only surviving on the military crowd that doesn't realize that they are over paying by 100%. A tattoo that would cost 100 - 200 anywhere else with better artist they are charging 300-400. Crazy.

  2. OMG. I got more interested in all the unusual things in the background of all the photos. Baby toys, sip cup on the floor, and my favorite the stains. I don't know if they were the stains of the last dead body or what. I know, everybody should carpet the place that they tattoo in, it won't grow mold or bacteria. The cover-ups made me laugh. Oh and don't forget to pick up a "souviner". And they offer tattoo parties at you house, awesome.

  3. Carley Peace, the Merriwether Elementary School second-grader struck by a vehicle in Edgefield County, S.C., last week, died at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday according to the Edgefield County Coroner's Office. Deputy Coroner David Burnett listed the cause of death as traumatic brain injury.

Family members had gathered at Medical College of Georgia's Children's Medical Center since the April 12 incident. Doctors told them bleeding around the young boy's brain following the incident had subsided, a positive sign, but the brain activity specialists continued to look for never emerged.

No charges have been filed, and the South Carolina Highway Patrol has not released any substantial information as it continues with the detailed investigation. Funeral arrangements are pending.

The is from the Augusta Chronical website today.

  4. I've always felt there was a huge disconnect between the tattoo and piercing communities, with a very small crossover, though folks outside of them like to wrap them up into one. Which I guess has a lot to do with the combo tattoo and piercing shops. I had my ears gauged for about ten years but recently took those out. Other than that, I never felt like I was part of any piercing community -- nor did I ever want to be -- and while I think the two are very loosely related at some kind of basic level, I think they're pretty far apart.

In conclusion, the term BOD-MOD makes me cringe.

In South Carolina you can't even have piercing and tattooing in the same shop.

  5. I made the trek down to Santa Cruz again last week to visit Stefan @ Lovedog and once again he delivered an incredible tattoo! He recently posted a picture of it in his gallery. Have a look:

I'm gonna have to find a way to get to Santa Cruz and get an appt with Stefan. All of his work is awesome.

I Just had another sitting on my sleeve yesterday. Did all the cloud-work and shading on the chest and top of shoulder. I wish I didn't have a collar-bone. That was the worst by far. The sternum was bad and near the nipple, but the collar-bone sucked so much more.

  6. Yesterday I walked into a bank in Orinda, which is on the other side of the tunnel from Oakland, and is very much another world. One of the tellers jumped up and said "I like your skin." It didn't make me cringe, far from it, she really meant it, and I liked that she saw it as my skin and not a tattoo that could somehow be separate from the rest of me. Anyone else ever get this comment?

I've had old people with Alzheimer's ask me what's wrong with my skin. lol. I have heard it other times to and it does feel pretty good to hear it that way.

  7. No real horror stories for me. I do have to say a big thanks for having trusting friends and a mentor that's understanding. My apprenticeship so for is more home based than anything thanks to local laws.

Since I have a home, family, and already broke, I couldn't commit to dropping everything and dedicating 2 years without earning money and paying $5,000 to an apprenticeship at a shop. Instead, I'm working full-time as an EMT and getting tattoo experience whenever I have free-time(whatever that is). My mentor lives kinda near me and we get together as much as possible. Anyway, he's taught me anywhere that we can. Sometimes at the shop he works, at his house, or my house. It's hard, but I believe that it'll be rewarding when I'm done. I'm hoping that I'll be able to move soon and get into a shop and earn a living from what I love.

Just a little history on my search for an apprenticeship. The nearest shops to me are in Augusta, GA. The shops with the best rep said that unless I had at least an Associates degree in art, they wouldn't even consider it. The next best shops either had commited apprentices, or wanted $5,000(this included "everything I need") and 2yrs without earning money. The cheapest wanted $2,000. These prices were to be paid in advance. The bottom of the barrell shops said that they didn't do apprentices because they just steal everything. I walked out of one shop without asking because the owner was passed out drunk on the floor. I did get one offer but it was at the shop inside the flea market(a friend mentioned to them I was looking). He said it would be 1yr, all the money in that year would go directly to him and then if I stayed he charged 60% of earnings. I would have to provide all supplies including ink, needles, gloves, paper towels, basically everything that I could possibly need. He only provided and autoclave(but no bags), a copier, and room(more like a closet about 6'x9') that I would share with another artist.

Also, I'd like to add that the lovely state of South Carolina only just made tattooing legal about 2yrs ago. However, the law states that you must follow the local ordinance for the county you are in. Aiken county has not written an ordinance, so therefore a shop can not be open. There is only about 3 counties in the state that allow tattooing, so you can imagine how hard it makes it for people to even get a tattoo.

  8. I had the best healing experience I've ever had with my last session so I figured it was worth sharing. It still looks just as good as my tattoos that healed using my previous regimen, but it only took like 4-5 days until the tattoo was completely flaked, healed, and looking like how most tattoos do weeks later. It also barely flaked at all- the lightest smoothest flaking possible. Thanks to Freddy Corbin for the tip... So rad.

    Leave the bandage/wrap on overnight.

Apply a hot compress to the fresh tattoo after you pull the bandage (transfers heat better than the shower)

Then take a hot shower to rinse everything off (cleans the surface better than a hot compress)

Aquaphor as needed over the next few days.

I've wondered about using a hot compress for healing. The concept is to encourage blood flow by dilating the vessels and capillaries. Better blood flow means better healing.

Thanks for the post on that Jake. I'm gonna give it a try after my next session.
