  1. Our shop is doing a coat drive to benefit our local homeless shelter with the help of this organization... One Warm Coat

    http://www.OneWarmCoat.org

We're simply asking people to dig through their closets for coats they don't wear anymore and to donate them for distribution at our local homeless shelter. We are offering a raffle ticket for each coat donated to enter a drawing for a tattoo gift certificate.

    Here's the facebook event:

Just thought I'd mention this in the off chance that someone might be inspired to do something similar. A friend of mine did a coat drive last year and that's how I found out about One Warm Coat. Wondering if anyone else here has done stuff like this in the past or plans to do anything similar for the holidays. We just feel so blessed to have what we have and do what we do... and sometimes all it takes is someone else mentioning a simple idea to inspire action in others.

Australian Tattoo Artist Allegedly Inks Lewd Image on Friend's Back

    Published October 26, 2010

A 21-year-old Australian man has been charged with assault after allegedly tattooing an image of a penis on his friend's back, according to the Courier Mail.

The 25-year-old victim was visiting the amateur tattoo artist at the man's home last week when he was talked into getting a tattoo, according to the paper.

The man wanted a yin and yang symbol tattooed on his back, but allegedly got a 16-inch tattoo of a penis with an obscene gesture instead.

Australian authorities said the incident followed an argument between the two.

The victim also says he was punched and thrown out of the man's house.

The 21-year-old tattoo artist has been charged with two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm and is due to appear in court next month.

  3. Well, here in VA the age limit is 16 with parental consent. We have guide lines (no forearm, neck, company logos, band logos, sex, death, violence, names other than the clients or their decesed) posted. So, we do them. But I don't wholly agree with the law. I automatically upcharge as well as try to "counsel" the child and their parent/legal guardian. More times than most, the kid has no clue and their "parent" seems to only want to let them get their way. So again, upcharge. If the "client" really bothers me, or doesn't want to heed my warning of getting a tattoo and it's repercussions, I decline to tattoo them. There have been cases of me being told I don't know what I'm talking about, etc. This is coming from an artist with visible areas tattooed. On a few occasions, I've suggested the parent not only leave the premisis but also whip their kid's ass. I personally don't condone tattooing minors, but 80% of the time, the parents don't seem to care, so I don't either. Double edged blade.....

I find the different laws from state to state so fascinating so thank you so much for posting. I find it especially interesting that you, the artist, are supposed to make a judgment call on the subject matter and steer clear of certain themes. Have you noticed whether or not your younger clients follow after care instructions well? Just curious.

  4. So, I know the PC answer here is that our children must wait until they are 18 like everyone else, BUT... I know of 2 instances where someone let their kid get tattooed before 18 and I sort of don't have a problem with it (for them).

Seems hypocritical since I made my son wait until his 18th birthday and threatened him that if he got a tattoo from anyone but my husband he would NEVER get tattooed at our shop and also filled his head with all types of cleanliness, health and safety issue horrors, all in an effort to keep him from going elsewhere or letting some sketchy sketcher fuck him up before he turned 18. In our case it worked. He waited and got a really nice tattoo for his birthday. But... SEVERAL of his friends have gotten tattooed before age 18 in street shops, just walkin in. WTF?

Anyhow, the first person I heard of was a guest tattooer at our friends' shop in Denver. His daughter had been begging for a tattoo since she was about 8 years old. He kept putting her off and making her wait, thinking she would grow out of it and change her mind. She didn't and by 12 years old was talking about it non-stop. So then he set up a series of goals and expectations for school work and chores and behavior, and told her if she did it all she could get a (tiny) tattoo. He figured she would never be able to comply with the entire list. She did everything he asked her to do. So, then he was kind of stuck and had to honor his word so he gave her a tiny dime sized star on her shoulder. (Her name is Estrella.) That parlayed into 3 more stars, one for each family member so she now has 4 little stars. I still think 12 is too young, but after hearing the entire explanation from this guy it somehow started to sound ok in this instance.

The second is an acquaintance of mine who's let her son who is 15 get a few tattoos. (I think he has 4 or 5 now.) He's grown up in a tattoo shop and will most likely tattoo for a living. I think he is already learning. And there are other circumstances that I won't mention here, but if you knew this family, Im telling you it just wouldn't seem that weird for mom to allow this. In my mind 15 is different than 12, but both are not 18 at the end of the day.

I think my final stand is that it's not ok for my family but I can see how it might be ok for others. Mind you these are parents (or friends of the parents) tattooing their own kids in their own shops. Im not in any way suggesting that one should ever tattoo a minor that you didn't personally know, even if the parents were there. I know my husband would never do it, under any circumstance.

So the question of this thread is... is it ever ok?

  5. I have matching tattoos down the backs of my arms for my sons. They are a dagger through a rose with a banner... and one says "Indiana" and the other says "Hunter" done by Juan Puente at 222... sometime in the late '90s.

Here is the recent one for my baby girl who is a year and a half now... She totally looked like a kewpie when she was born... Artist is Josh Ford (Honorable Irons) at Lifetime Tattoo in Denver, CO

  6. One story that came to mind today was one of Scott's birthday parties... his 30th maybe? Anyway, he rented a rollerskating rink and, as many people know, his birthday is 11/1 so he often celebrates on Halloween. So it was a costumed rollerskating party and holy shit it was awesome. First of all, the 222 boys rented a van to get there since many of us didn't have cars and I think also wanted to drink, so the van pulls up out front and Lolly and I are standing there watching everyone pile out like a clown car from the circus. This chick gets out of the van and we are like "whoa! what is her costume? prostitute?" but also were noting that she had great legs and then OMFG it was Hector Fong (shop guy at the time) in drag! We seriously thought he was a girl. So the costumes were AMAZING and if only I knew where the damn photos were I'd be a super star. Scott dressed like Mr. T and seriously looked exactly like him. He shaved his head like Mr. T, wore flesh colored sleeves, painted his face and wore the full overalls/ gold chains get up. Phenomenal! Juan was dressed in a giant man-sized Picachu costume and could not roller skate to save his life, so he was this giant yellow Pokemon constantly falling down and then mostly just holding onto the side of the rink or staying on the carpet. Other favs were Freddie Corbin and Lisa dressed as Jim and Tammy-Faye Baker and Jason McAfee dressed as Olive Oil from Popeye. Now if I only knew where those pics were.... dang it!

  7. The same week that we heard about the impending apocalypse and Noah and his ark, a maintenance guy saw me walking down the street after work in a tank top and the next day demanded to see my sweet tats. Less than an hour later the holy roller requested a viewing. The next day I was let go.

Her reasoning was that we had to work together and she didnt think we were vibing well.

    Pft.

That sounds to me like a big fat law suit waiting to happen! Which brings up an interesting question... are we (tattooed folks) protected legally against discrimination? I wonder...

  8. It's true! I'm surprised they haven't just straight up hired actors yet..

They HAVE! The one dip shit shop girl on LA Ink was also on Brett Micheals - Rock of Love and the 2nd dip shit shop girl was also "cast" by the producers. It's all contrived/ semi-scripted bullshit. Also, I don't know how anyone gets through a tattoo on those shows because they make you stop and start over and over again as they set up different shots. (Gotta move cameras, lights, etc.) So really those people are getting tattooed for hours on and off. Sounds like a nightmare to me! That being said, I DVR the shit and tune in every single week like a crack addict. ha ha The one thing I can't dispute is the tattoos they do show for the most part are really nice and occasionally I'll see a friend or aquaintance on the show and that's fun.

  9. I knew a girl who got a friend of mine's (not naming names) last name tattooed across her shoulders in big old English letters after they married and she took his name. The artist did it in brown instead of black just in case - I'm not even sure if he told her, just wanted the option of going over it later i guess. the marriage wasn't meant to be in the end.. i'm not sure if she ever did get it covered or what not. my next one will probably be something to do with my kids. kids are permanent like tattoos i guess.

She got it covered! And is happily married to someone else with beautiful children! ;-) The brown ink was brilliant foresight!

  10. I guess I feel like there's 2 schools here... the one that is a true drop out from society facial tattoo... and then the one that has been mainstreamed by musicians and X-games athletes. I've seen young little blond-haired girls in their early 20's will full tribal face tattoos panhandling on the Haight. I don't get it, but if it's a fuck you to society well then I certainly understand the mentality. Part of me is jealous cuz I'd like to think I'm hardcore and don't give a fuck, but really I'd rather be able to function in polite society when necessary. I want to be able to have a conversation with my kid's teacher without having to first win them over and assure them we are not a family of serial killers. I haven't done my face, hands, neck or even chest yet, but will likely do all (EXCEPT my face) before I'm done. I also think it's a little silly to get your throat/ neck/ hands done when you're arms and torso are not covered. From what I understand those body parts used to be the "last frontier" that you only tattooed when you were out of room elsewhere. Thanks to people like Tommy Lee and Travis Barker I guess that's no longer the deal. At the end of the day, I do believe "to each, his own". I'm thankful I live in a world where I can do whatever I want with my own body. So what if that betty wants to work behind the MAC makeup counter for the rest of her life. Not my problem!
