  1. @Graeme unfortunately no, 1 more session and we should be done with background. Well maybe 1/2 a session and we will be done. I have mentioned earlier i have had laser removal on 4 pieces but the last which is my 1st ever tattoo (eagle) has proven to be stubborn so we have had to extend the design on right thigh to cover it. So right side wont have the nice sharp edge line to it that left does. We did the outline of that on Thursday otherwise I would have been finished with the outline. Also still some more detail to go in the rocks which are the black and gray areas near warriors feet etc. So colour wont be too far away. - - - Updated - - - Bethenny lets hope for your sake you dont so you can do a back piece. Good luck with getting your 1st
  2. Bethenny, if you really want your back done then do it. We all might whinge about how bad a backpiece can be while getting but i promise that all who have finished a backpiece would do it again. I myself am about 1/2 way through mine and although it sucks getting the work and healing it the satisfaction of seeing perhaps the biggest piece of art you can do on your body is awesome. I dont look forward to my fortnightly sessions but once they are done I cannot wait to get home and see the progress. The end result is well and truely worth it. Btw @Cork love the work, great detail and colours. I wish I was that far advanced with mine. - - - Updated - - - This fortnights update. Most of work was done on right side arse cheek and thigh but shows how he merged the original 3/4 sleeve into the backpiece.
  3. @Graeme, I hear you about the travel, I am lucky my artist of choice is only 2-3 hours travel from where I live which makes the normal 3 hour sessions on back easy and even the odd 6 hour session do-able. You say it is humbling now. Give it about 5-6 more sessions and you will say it is f**ked. I am about half way through mine and I am over it all. But if I had my time over again, I would still do it. Even half done it is so cool having such a large piece of awesome artwork on your body. Is a piece of art that we own that can never be lost or stolen from us. :) Cheers.
  4. @ThatGuy I know what you are going through. For a long time all my old less good ink was easily covered by short sleeves and shorts. I was happy that it could all be covered. I had an epiphany and realised that why am I not getting what I want due to what I think others might think. So fast forward 2 years and I now have 3/4 sleeves and chest pieces and in the process of doing backpiece and plans to keep going. I still however have no plans to do neck/hands etc as I myself want the ability to cover it all if I want to and that is entirely my choice. I was as nervous as hell at 1st having art that is shown in my normal day to day clothing but now I can safely say it is not that a big deal. Some say they don't like it (mainly only parents) but everyone else either doesn't care or you great great comments on your great artwork. On a whole I can say having visible work has been positive for me and I wish I didnt wait so long to do what I wanted. Long story short. Do what you want, dont let others dictate where and what you want. Dont get hung up on visible work and what others think as from my experience it wont be as bad as you expect. Even my mother which is possibly the main disliker of my visible work has made the comment while out for lunch "yours are much better than those" in reference to some mediocore work on others. May not have answered your question but my thoughts are do what you want and where you want. From my experience visible tattoos are not that big a deal. Cheers.
  5. @Dumpleton love that tiger and on knee of all places. I have seen some work around by Norbert. Nice work.
  6. Thanks @hogg I am in awe of how it is turning out. Like you said the pain is worth it. I still enjoy it when you get home after a session and wash all the crud and shit off the new work and see the art progressing. For me that is about a 2-3 hour drive so by that time I am ready to see the latest progress. Is what keeps me going knowing that it looks great 1/2 done so imagine what it will look like when complete. The thing I love about serious work like a backpiece is that everyone who gets them doesn't do it on a whim and is prepared to commit to a big undertaking. They do the research, they spend the time and work out the artist best suited for them and the style of work they want. Because of all that research that they get an awesome piece of art. I have said it in previous post and will say it again, Since I have started my backpiece I now have alot more respect for people that get extensive work.
  7. Thanks @Cork Yeah I have to say I am pretty over the arse and thighs at the moment. I am dealing with the pain of the tattooing ok just sick of the healing side of things. Sitting on 1 side of arse, limping around at work, hovering over the toilet etc. Hopefully only about 2 more sessions of shading and an additional chunk of outline work on right thigh (due to an old tattooing not fading as well as the rest) and we will be returning to the back for colour which will be healing heaven. :)
  8. Another progress shot. Did a bit of colour as I didn't fancy having new work on both sides of arse and thighs at the same time. I can't wait till we get away from the arse and thigh area. :(
  9. Yeah I have to say I cant wait till we get to return to the back area. Hopefully only a few more shading and background sessions on arse/thighs then colour on the back. :) Cork, You can have your shaved arse and legs. Might feel smooth for 2-3 days but then just is itchy as hell and horrible to deal with. I cant see any scenario in future that they will be ever shaved again. :)
  10. Does anyone who has or is currently enduring a full back piece extending to knees have any comments on healing arse and upper thigh area? For some reason, mainly the thigh area is taking me alot longer to heal than normal. Nearly every other area on my body after the 1st week it is healed and all scabbing/flaking has gone and I am only left with the shiny skin. On my thighs even after 3-4 weeks there is still slight flaking and almost 2nd healing of the skin. Thankfully this isn't resulting in colour loss or dropouts but just has me curious why it is taking so long. Also I have to make the comment, having your arse shaved for the tattooing sucks as it can become very itchy and annoying in the next week or 2. :)
  11. @Reyeslv, Thanks for the comment, I can't wait to see the finished product. I have found thigh/ass area quite hard to heal. Almost all other areas on body were happy after 2 weeks but thighs and ass for me have been hard work. Add to that areas which I have never shaved before in my life being shaved and I just cant wait for it to be over. All I can say end result will be worth it. - - - Updated - - - @Seasee, I love it. You have to love the spontaneous decisions. In a way my backpiece was very quick in the planning. I wont bore you with the story, but the main design of my back was decieded within probably 6 weeks and a fair bit of flexability left in the artists hands. I love how it is turning out and fall in love with the design more each day. Sometimes being spontaneous and going with your heart can be the best way. :)
  12. @SeeSea, I have for you the ultimate question. Would you start the process of a backpiece again if you had the time over? I am pretty confident I would do it all again. :) Even unfinished I still look at mine and think of it as great art that will be with me forever and I think I can't wait to see the end result. Maybe I just should stop whining about the process and look forward to enjoying the stunning art at the end of it all. Cheers
  13. It is great to hear that I am not the only one who questions WTF did I start a backpiece. Only today I have finished a 3 hour background shading session on my left ass cheek and upper thigh. I now can look forward to 4-5 days of hovering over toilets when needing to take a sh*t and general discomfort of sitting anywhere. :) Doing a backpiece at the start seems such a great idea at the time but it can be a long hard slog. I am now into mine for about 40 hours and we haven't even started colour. For me it has been a great eye opener for people that are heavily tattooed. I used to always see large scale work in pictures and loved the look of it etc, but it is only now that I can appreciate the long hours of not only tattooing but the healing and day to day discomfort that the healing brings. I always thought the actual tattooing sessions were the worst but I am now appreciating that the week after each session can suck just as much. Not trying to put anyone off a backpiece as once done the results can be spectacular, I am just saying it can be a long road. :)
  14. I have to agree with Mick completely, for me the amount of pain and discomfort is almost random. Some sessions I have thought would be unbearable have been a breeze yet on the other side some areas I read are easy I have found quite tough. Recently just had both back of thighs background shading done. Left hand side I completely struggled with and couldn't wait for the session to be over. Yet just a week later the right side was a breeze. Elbow pits are another area alot say are bad, yet For me they were not too bad. My thoughts are every session hurts, some more than others. Thankfully no session has killed me yet so only makes me stronger. :) For me the end result is all that matters, getting great artwork.
  15. Thanks MrToby. I spent alot of time looking at various artists throughout Australia as I could have potentially afforded to fly a few hours for each session. Luckily for me Kian is only about a 2-2.5 hour drive away and his work I really like. Nice work on your back as well, should look killer when done. I am reaching the point in my back thinking WTF have I done and I am over it all and want to stop but also thinking damm I cant wait to see this finished. :)
  16. Thanks Iwar, Kian Forreal owner of Authentink in Surry Hills Sydney is doing the work. Love his work and a great guy to boot. Unfortunately on my back he has had to work around 3 previous tattoos which I have had laser removal on. Already without it being finished and colour added I struggle to see 2 of the pieces and the 3rd is being covered next session. :)
  17. I thought it was about time I posted my recently in progress backpiece, started end of Feb this year. This pic is about 36 hours in progress. I am quite tall and also have a bit of extra meat around the "love handle" area so is a big amount of skin to cover. I have been doing constant 3 hour sessions every 2-3 weeks with 2 x 6 hour sessions thrown in. Generally have been pretty good with each session but I have to say left thigh background shading for some reason sucked incredibly, probably one of the least favourite sessions of all my new work. Strange thing was the right thigh shading a week later (not shown in pic) was easy. I just noticed btw the snakes body going across my arse does line up, it looks like it doesn't but must have been the way I was standing in the pic. It was taken after the left thigh shading session and I was not a happy camper. :) Also just attached the outline after the 1st 6 hour session.
  18. Looking good there. A great start. I too am keen to hear who the artist is. Good to see another local, I am only about 2 hours from Sydney.
  19. I will try and update regulary. I usually have a 3 hour session every 2 weeks which has it moving along nicely, however in the next 2 weeks I have 3 x 3 hour sessions booked. Not going to be sleeping much in the next 2 weeks. :) But at least it will be great progress.
  20. That is very quick. I wish I was at that stage with mine. I am 33 hours in and only have outline and 3/4 of the background done. It looks great, congratulations on finishing.
  21. Mick, good to see another Aussie. Thanks for the comments, I had initially thought of a dragon as the main back theme, but then came across that pic and thought it would work well. Once the background started I knew it was the right move. I always thought the back would be it, but already have started discussions with artist on doing ribs and front. I already have chest panels so would be stupid not to continue on front. :) Then once that is done how can you not do the legs? Cheers Jason.
  22. Zillah, There are so many things I could say about you kiwis but some things I am too sheepish to talk about. Sorry I couldn't help myself. :) Cork, Both of my sleeves and back are in his instagram feed. But as far as your question goes I am the snake and warrior back piece guy. The backpiece was designed based on a Utagawa Kuniyoshi drawing which I will try and attache. BrianH, Still trying to sort out pics etc but I have attached the last session Instragram photo as posted by Kian. Doesn't show the whole back the best as the last session was just outline on upper right leg and right ass. On right thigh you can still see the last of my 4 original tattoos still being removed. That was my 1st and is proving to be the toughest to remove. If you look closely you maybe able to see the last remains of 2 decent sized pieces on shoulder blades.
  23. Mike, I have had extensive removal on 4 older tattoos. I did some research into various places but ended up going many times to the place (which was at another tattoo shop) my (New) tattoo artist recommended. I did do a consult and a single session at a laser clinic/ beauty clinic and found them to be considerably more expensive. The reason (other than price) why I preferred the tattoo shop style approach was mainly I was getting some removal/fading for some coverup work. The operator at the tattoo shop was heavily covered and also had other artists on hand that could advise how much lightening was required for the cover up. My thoughts are if you were going for complete removal than either style would do the job. If I was only going for lightening for a cover up I think I prefer the tattoo shop style. They IMHO have more experience with what can and cant be covered effectively and may end up costing you less due to a lower number of laser sessions required. I did the usual checks and made sure both places were clean and registered / used reputable equipment / had portfolios etc etc. Jason
  24. Thanks for the welcome. I can't promise I wont hold it against you being a kiwi. Only time will tell. All my new work has been done by Kian Forreal at Authentink in Surry Hills (Sydney) I spent alot of time researching my new artist and his work was the one that really worked for me. Was on his wait list for just over 18 months but has been well worth it. He is a great artist and a great guy to boot. I am now in for about 33 hours on my backpiece, loving and despising the process at the same time. Not sure what is next after the back, but I doubt it will stop there. :) Jason.
  25. I thought it was about time I signed up to LST rather than just lurking in the shadows. I have visited LST on and off for a few years now and always found it to be most helpful and some of the members work is stunning. Enough of the small talk I am Jason, 39yr old from Australia. My 1st tattoo I had done over 20 years ago. In the next 10 years I had another 3 pieces done of various sizes and quality. I'd class 2 of them as decent pieces and 2 of them as pieces I had no time for. Fast forward to 3 years ago and I decided that it was time to ditch the bad quality work and get something decent. So in the last 2 years I have had all 4 old pieces laser lightened/removed which has allowed me to complete 2 x 3/4 sleeves with chest panels and in Feb 2014 started a full back piece, neck to knees. Needless to say the last 2 years I have seen my fair share of ruined bedsheets/clothing and a huge amount of time nursing healing tattoos and laser treatments. Just makes me wish that 20 years ago there was a better internet experience than the 1200bps text dial up I used and maybe a few forums around like LST. :) If there was maybe I wouldn't have started with the dodgy tattoos and started with something better. Anyway I look forward to further postings and hopefully providing some others with some helpful information. Cheers Jason.
