  1. Hi all,

I'm a self confessed tattoo virgin currently planning my first tattoo down here is sunny NZ.

I've wanted a tattoo for a while but to be honest I've found the whole journey a little intimidating, I feel I hit on what I really wanted about 12 months ago and I've spent that that time NOT getting that tattoo in order to make sure it's something I really want. In the meanwhile, I was inspired by reading Magpie Hall (and NZ novel about tattoos) and Bodies of Subversion (a fantastic non fiction book about women and tattoos)... I'm a librarian, can you tell?

Anyhow, I've found it quite hard to find quality advice around tattoos, not being part of the typical tattoo crowd (though I'm starting to learn there's no such thing).

Looking forward to tapping into the gold mine of info on LST!

    Welcome to the board.

As someone that also came here for information, it will help a lot. Just don't rush and explore this awesome site as much as possible.

  2. haha - never have sen the show - however - i must confess that the tattoo that inspired this one was apparently inspired from said show

i just saw the picture and thought it was so odd and cool

plus i am a coffee addicted fool

anyway - my explanation of my reasoning for getting this tattoo was just that i liked the image

odd funny interesting are my main rules of engagement :)

I as well am a coffee addict.

where do you plan on going for your tattoo(s)?

  3. I'm from South Jersey!

I definitely did my research and I am pretty positive on a place.

    Wow... That is crazy lol

Sweet where you going to et this done?

  4. Welcome to the board bro!

Glad to know I'm not the only newbee trying to figure out good from bad. Yes, one bad comment can ruin your day! It is really hard, though, to find out what is good - there's a thread on here about that. However, with the internet every comment can find it's opposite somewhere. I haven't had the nerve to put up my coverup that I just got - I'm really happy with it, so I want to have time loving it before some comment crashes it! Good luck with yours and glad to meet another newbee on the list.

I agree, for once I can come to a place and ask questions without getting laughed at.

  5. It really depends on the tattooer, sometimes to even get an appointment you have to do a consult beforehand, others work better with it rolled up into one. I've had consults a month before the appointment where we talked about each little thing, went over reference and got everything ironed out, and I've had appointments with guest artists, or when I was travelling where I just walked in, showed them the place and bounced a couple ideas around. Different people work differently, so I think it's best to let them do their thing.

If you've already sent a deposit and some references with an idea of what you want you should be good, if you have a specific idea in your head of what you want it to look like maybe you can reach out to them to get that idea across, but if you chose your tattooer specifically for their style then I'm sure you'll be happy with what they come up with.

@exume Thank you man, I appreciate the info.

  6. The answers depend on the artist. If you want to share the artist's name someone here might be able to share their personal experience with the artist.

I was just asking in general.

Just so I know how things work when I'm trying to get appointments.

I don't really wanna be "that guy" with a thousand questions.

  7. As a newbie in the world of tattoo, I have a question.

When booking an appointment 3 months or longer in advance for an all day session, with reference sent via email as well with deposit.

is it common to get the consult the day of the appointment?

OR do artists usually consult before the appointment date to iron out details of the tattoo?

How many hours is considered an all day session? from what I gather it's about 4-8 hours depending on artist?

  8. Yes, I've been traveling for 10 years and have crossed the entire country (from east to west coast) 4 times. Been on the road 7-8 months per year. I finally sold my house in May of this year so can now call myself a full-timer! I would like to investigate Canada more next summer.

    That is awesome!!!!

Congrats on being able to do what I dreamed of doing when I finished college.

  9. get two sessions of laser treatment, to lighten the tattoo. wait 6 months to let the skin settle, find a competent artist, and maybe get a rose tattooed over the top, classic, timeless, represents love and could possibly tie to growth etc. a colour tattoo will work way better to cover this design than a black & grey one. that's what i'd recommend

    ^ ^ ^

  10. Welcome!

    Where are you from?

I fully encourage your tattoo! Just make sure you do your research and find a good artist.

Next year I'm getting a half sleeve of Back to the Future soooo no judgment from me. hahaha

I'm flying to California for that appointment.
