Another thing I'd say about selling supplies to the public...it is the opposite of supporting tattooing or the "industry". These are also the folks who will usually have the most difficult time finding legit shops to work in or apprenticeships. Anyone who is truly passionate about tattooing, they are out getting tattoos and forming bonds and relationships with people who are doing tattoos in shops who have dedicated their life to it. People who really support tattooing and get tattooed are the ones who, over time, are fortunate enough to find someone who will give them a shot.

Selling supplies to the public defeats the purpose of what you say you're trying to accomplish with this school.
Not that you care about it, but you're not allowed to solicit on the forum, which is just a small reason why people are responding the way they are. There's no point in trying to explain why people will think that you're an interloper.

Yeah, I know that they are selling to the public. They have stuff on amazon and they are in my home town. I was just curious if they'd admit it here.

Yeah, this is seemingly one of the most difficult things about painting with oils: not only is there the usual artistic stuff going on that makes any kind of drawing or painting hard at the best of times, but it practically seems like you need to be a fucking chemist in addition to all that to make sense of oils. I like the bleaching it with sunlight idea, though I'm wondering if it's just easier to paint over that part of it with either a more concentrated titanium white or have it diluted with turp instead of linseed oil.
Great advice on the titanium dioxide vs zinc oxide/sulfide too. I've been thinking that I'm going to invest in some artist-quality Gamblin oils (seems that there's a good balance between price and quality there compared to other brands) and they have a titanium zinc white that might do the trick.

My dad also paints and about a year ago he gave me a bottle of liquin (it says it resists yellowing on the bottle) which I hadn't used until now. Mixing it with the white seems to have masked most of the yellowing. I'll see how it holds up as it dries, and maybe touch it up a little bit if necessary. I'm not sure that I like the liquin because it has this strange gel-like consistency, but maybe I'll play around with it a little and see what I can do with it until I make my next trip to the art store. Thanks for the advice though, it was really helpful.

Mineral spirits or distilled turpentine would be a good choice for thinning out, for sure.

I spent the better part of two years working on just the right gesso recipe for silverpoint drawing - many many tossed boards, lots of dust and bad gesso batches later, I finally have the recipe that works just right for me and my needs. It's going to take time, experimentation and research, that's for sure!

Find good reference, tattoo or non tattoo related and try and draw exactly what you see. That's a good starting point. Practice it as often as possible. If your drawing is close but looks off, don't fix it. Redraw it.

We grew up with some heavy dudes in the early to mid eighties who got into tattooing their faces and shit, but typical jailhouse style.
I can honestly say but, that face portrait I have never seen anything quite like it. Truly unfuckenbelievable.

I've never offered to finish a tattoo started by someone else. Usually the only time I've been in the position to finish something someone else started was if something happened with their previous tattooer, ie moved too far away, etc.
If it's just someone offering you a "deal" then I'd say just stick with who at started it.
    Best of luck

We don't really like discussing prices here on the board, but frankly, $160/hour is not outrageous, at all.

Find good reference and use it a lot. Don't worry so much about creating something that is "yours" as reproducing quality imagery. Don't listen to the folks who praise you. If someone says something isn't good see if they will tell you why. Good luck.
